What's wierd is that when you click on the "about me" section , under contributions, it already shows "comments". But the counter always says 0 , as if it was initially intended to be treated the same as forum posts, but it's just not working properly.

Confirmed.

In terms of post counts, my comments actually seem to be counted as forum posts, both in the "about me" section and in the forums.

I just had the same idea, searching for a particular comment I made regarding a Comic-Con panel. The problem was that I'd watched that particular video not from the main page about the Comic-Con panel, but on a related news page. It took me ages to find that page again, find my comment and check what people had said since then.

Comments seem to be treated as throw-aways at the moment. They're not counted as "contributions" in our profiles at all. No way to track how many you've posted or what it was you commented on. Getting PMs when someone mentions my @name is a good start, but there is much room for improvement.

Another weird point: I commented on a Start/Select video, linked from the Flash plug-in on the GS home page. Clicking on the link to the same video in the News section of the home page shows a completely different set of comments, that don't include mine. To find my comment I have to go via the Flash plug-in again. Not sure what will happen when the next Start/Select comes out - will I lose the ability to access my comment?

In Summary:

1. Comments we post should be added to the "contributions" on our GS profiles. Ideally make the whole comment thread accessible from there, but make it possible to jump straight to our own comments and any direct @ replies.

2. Comment threads should be linked to the content being presented on a page, rather than making them dependent on the way this page was accessed.
