@BenjaminBanklin: They get 30% from every games on xbox one and 100% for the 1P games like sea of thieves, add to that the services like Xbox live gold + Xbox game pass & it's a nobrainer.

to give a reply to your other post, Surface was also up by 31% https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/Investor/earnings/FY-2018-Q3/press-release-webcast

The reason behind microsoft reorganization isn't to hide Xbox or Surface, it's to focus on AI and Cloud which all the company are after right now and the thing that makes the most of money for them. (See Amazon AWS)

@quadknight https://www.dualshockers.com/microsofts-gaming-business-profitable-growing-profitably-critical-future/

It's profitable with the Xbox Live Gold subscriptions (Paid online + free games every month) alone.

In 2017, we expect console gaming to generate a total of $33.5 billion in revenues worldwide, of which 65.8% digital.

Did they do the same thing about PC Physical release when Steam became a thing in 2004?

I don't think the marketing is poor. We are still several month away from the release and the biggest marketing for this game will come from streamers & streaming services since the game seems to cater to that.

It has the biggest library of games after PC thanks to backward compatibility (Xbox 360 games & OG xbox games enhanced) & the new games from this gen (Forza, halo, Gears, Recore, SOT, SD2, Crackdown 3, SLT, Cuphead, KI, Sunset Overdrive etc...) I will only get bigger in the future if hopefully "the backward compatibility" is forward compatible with the future Xbox: https://gamingbolt.com/microsoft-teasing-xbox-one-x-forward-compatibility

I don't get the comparison with NMS.

No Man's Sky failed to deliver on many of its promises and trailers. SoT, so far, has playable elements from all of its trailers.

The only exception is the Kraken, which we haven't yet seen in action. The only complaint i've seen was about a lack of content on the long term.

The game can be played solo if you want so: https://twitter.com/Ghoulyboy/status/939496799093645312

It should have been clear with the previous update showing the small ship at 2:31:

@davillain-:

online paywall --> started with Phantasy Star online with the Dreamcast.

Expansion packs were a thing on PC (MMO) & DLC was a thing with the Dreamcast as well: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Downloadable_content

all the big video games companies are doing it:

Aalso expect it on RDR2. Nothing to do with microsoft here.

https://www.dualshockers.com/sony-microtransactions-ps4/

During the Sony Corporation’s quarterly financial conference call for investors and analysts, the company’s executives have talked more about the plans for the PlayStation business.

First of all Finance and Corporate Development Executive Atsuko Murakami talked about PlayStation Plus. She mentioned that the company would like to make the service more attractive for existing members to keep user retention rate high. While it’s not easy to retain users for a long time, Sony has been implementing measure to achieve that goal.

Chief Financial Officer Kenichiro Yoshida mentioned that more than half of the sales for the Game and Network Services sales in the current fiscal year will be coming from the network.

There are mitigating factors to the effect of the console cycle on revenue: the business model used to be a business-to-business royalty-based model, but now it has shifted to direct sales to consumers. Hardware sales are still important, but the number of monthly active users is getting more relevant, alongside PlayStation Plus subscribers and how much time they spend on Sony’s services and consoles.

Therefore, according to Yoshida-san, the axis is shifting from hardware to user base.

On top of that, after the purchase of a game, users can purchase items or content within the game itself, and the proportion of those sales is increasing.

Yoshida-san also talked about former Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Andrew House leaving PlayStation and John Kodera stepping in his place. Since Kodera-san is the one who built up the network business, his appointment will lead to further expansion of that segment. Under his direction, Sony can strengthenthe direction and improve the recurring revenue business

Thoughts?
