X1950 pro lacks Directx 10 supprot which will be used in future games.But in current Directx 9 games it is much faster than 8600gt.You should get a 8600gts which is a bit faster thean 8600gt.But remember x1950 pro is faster than both in current games and if 8600gts can properly play Directx 10 games remains to be seen.
I am using windows vista and xp on dual boot system.Just have to create a new partition for vista.First install xp(if you dont have xp already) then install vista on new partition.Have been using this for months no problems whatsoever.
