This is a very well written analysis of gaming's place in this discussion. Gaming does have a role in this, as do movies, as does the gun lobby, as do many other pieces. Establishing how much of a role is impossible because it's all subjective and there will never be a consensus. What is important is that we as gamers, and the industry, take a stance and accept our responsibility for it. The worst part about this whole thing is everyone's refusal to take any responsibility.
I've supported these games on a number of occasions, and would like to continue to, but I feel they are suffering from TonyHawk/Guitar Hero-itis. Too many games with too few changes or improvements. It's clever and fun the first few times, but there need to be some new mechanics to reinvigorate the genre. Otherwise, it's just a slightly different paint job.
I've really enjoyed much about the LEGO games, but I am feeling Tony Hawk/Guitar Hero syndrome here. It's the same thing over and over and over... They really need to do something different to reinvigorate this series of games.
