I am going to jump into this latest generation by purchasing one of the 3 consoles. I have some qualifications which need to be met, so i'm hoping you all can offer some advice on which console will best fulfill my needs:

1.) I need a console which is backed by an amazing company with huge name brand recognition, the bigger the better

2.) The best online experience possible, preferably by the company which brought console gaming to the mainstream by perfecting the craft

3.) A controller which is constantly evolving, but not in a gimmicky way. In subtle ways like analog vibration.

4.) Hardware which is extremely reliable, but if there ever was an incident, the company would be willing to stand behind the problem 100% and offer free repairs, not require me to send it back on my dime and pay for the repair as well

5.) Finally, I would like a console which features a revolutionary FPS alien shooter with amazing online play, a top notch realistic racing game, and a hack and slash gory game with tons of chainsaws and violence.

Can all these unique needs be fulfilled by any one console, or am I out of luck? Thanks in advance!

After doing some very careful, calculated research, I predict a hard flop. Sony just isn't committed to PSVR enough to produce some quality content. PS Eye anyone?

MS has repeatedly been on the brink of defeat. Closer than Sony or Nintendo ever were. And we give them the benefit of the doubt because they have MS's deep pockets to bail them out but there were moments, like E3 2013 when I thought that it was the end for the Xbox brand. They kept going but not unharmed and I feel out of the 3 that they have the least thought out plans of what they are trying to be in the gaming market. An entertainment center? They don't even know what that means, themselves. For some reason we think of MS as very stable but they have shown to be anything but stable. They had a very hard time trying to make a profit. Brute-forced their way in. Nothing smart or elegant about it. And once they started making a profit their competition left them eating dust. I'd say MS is actually the least likely to be around in a 1000 years. And if they are, I think they'd be a store.

Sony is being very steady. They make mistakes (like the Vita) but it never feels like they are in danger. Because they always have a product out there that is exactly what you expect a console to be. Without weird corporate restrictions or innovations, but with some quality exclusives. However, looking at the consoles imminent collision with the PC market, I'm not sure that such a safe thought process will be enough to keep them around. At some point, without taking a daring stance for consoles to keep existing, they're not going to be around forever. Can they pull that off? I think they can. Repeatedly? Not so sure. I think Sony could exist in a 1000 years as a great gaming publisher.

And Nintendo is unpredictable. Yes they do change their hardware a lot. And they do change their franchises a lot in certain ways. But not just in desperation or as a weakness. They did that during the times that they were strongest. They always changed things around. And you need to be able to do that to survive a 1000 years of consoles. However all this jumping around erratically in the eyes of the consumer make them feel unbalanced. Something that's going to break at some point. I don't think that's necessarily true for Nintendo. They are tried and tested. Atari, SEGA. How often have they been said to be doomed? But if you look at their financials, they always knew how to take care of themselves. They have proven to be very bendy, and almost anything they do is self explanatory in hindsight but seems inexplicable upfront. That is to say, out of the three they are the ones that understand gaming better than the others, and apparently better than we do. I could see them be around in a 1000 years, but I have no idea as what. Probably selling erotically charged gaming peripherals.

Sony nearly folded in the early years of the PS3. The Cell nearly single-handedly bankrupt the company.

Sony is desperately trying to push VR in our faces by introducing PSVR. From personal experience, I can tell you PSVR is a waste of time and money. It is not ready for mainstream consumption, but $ony will do anything they can to earn an extra buck. The games selection is not getting enough 3rd party support, so Sony will have to force on us some 1st party rehashes.

Microsoft on the other hand is carefully trying to integrate VR into their gaming experience by introducing VR headsets at each Microsoft store and carefully evaluating the individual consumer experience. Microsoft brought us Kinect, which was a massive success. Kinect 2 did not perform as well due to negative press, but it was equally unique.

Nintendo is out of the game, so I won't mention them.

What say you? Can Microsoft save the VR day by brining us some revolutionary hardware?

Come up with your own appropriate slogan for each of the 3 console makers (we'll call Switch a console for the sake of this exercise).

Xbone - The Power. The Experience. The Revolution.

Switch - From Child to Manchild

Playstation 4 - For Gamers By Corporatists

Sony's PS brand is quite successful, there is no denying that. They have done a great job copying off other innovators and integrating those innovations into their own system and milking their user base for profits. One might think Sony is a healthy company based on PS, but not so! Sony is one of the least diversified Fortune 500 companies. I recently studied their 10-q financial reports since 2007, and it looks like Sony is becoming increasingly dependent on the PS brand. This spells doom for Sony in the long run. Only a company like Microsoft can stand the test of time through their diversification.

Sony WILL go the way if Sega and Atari.

What say you?
