When I think "crossover between Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi" I think "Mario, Luigi and Paper Mario join forces to defeat a new villain who wants to destroy/control both the paper and normal worlds. Along the way they encounter fan favorites from both series, including but not limited to Fawful, Dimentio, various partners from the Paper Mario series, Count Bleck, Doopliss, The Master, Popple, Midbus, Starlow (the only one of these characters actually confirmed), Stuffwell, Prince Dreambert, O'Chunks, Rawk Hawk, Twink, the Star Spirits, Mr. L, the Shroobs, Tippi, Antasma, and/or Tubba Blubba.
Instead, the actual plot is "Your usual Mario game, with paper characters. Gather generic Toads and stop Bowser and Paper Bowser from kidnapping Peach and Paper Peach. We completed this game as much as possible only using characters from the Super Mario world. Fans of original Mario RPG characters, you're welcome for the middle finger."
I wish Nintendo would realize why we hated Sticker Star. It was because of that stupid rule of no original or returning characters beyond Kersti, and minimal plot. I don't care what you say about Super Paper Mario, it excelled in those areas and I love it for that. A crossover should combine the BEST of both series, not the bare minimum.
That said, I still hold out for a few cameos. I doubt they have the audacity to make a crossover with no cameos of originals from the series.
