Sony said during the development process of the ps3 that the system wouldn't be concidered a game console no more and judging by the stuff the team showed off I can clearly understand why.the main reason for them to make the system 600 dollars is to clearly show that this console isnt meant for gaming no more and that in the future game consoles wouldnt be concidered game consoles at all even though it supports video gaming.
