The reason its not online is pretty obivous when you think about it, and its because it can't sync up all of the characters and enimes well and in a game that requires precission its for the better that they didn't bother with putting it in because then every one would just complain about the lag and what not. As for it being a retail game and not a downloadable one its because obiviously they can get more consumers buying the game. Yeah sure maybe the "hardcore" fans would buy it then but even then at a lower price nintendo would once again get less money, and before anything else Nintendo is a business.
Ok one thing that really makes no sense to me in this topic is that mario zelda pokemon etc are being refused as a comparison to uncharted and gears of war because they are poplular and been around for awhile. Why should nintendo be penilized for using good franchies that stand the test of time Anyways good story and characters well theres fire emblem and others as well.

seeing how we saw nothing on zelda this year other than a piece of concept art I think we wont be seeing it till 2011 because nintendo tends to give titles like this at least a year after a trailer to hit shelves
