Story is given as a plus in the review but after finally finishing it, it is the worst part of this game. It ultimately questions the reviewers integrity. Was the story a plus because it is a really a good story OR is it because it aligns with reviewer's personal values ? The answer, No! The story is disappointing and there is all that is to it. A generic linear story the less said the better. This game is probably 8/10 but not for the reasons stated above in the review. This review along with Day's gone has made it clear that this reviewer's lack of articulation and overall, general logic has been detrimental to the users who visit this website, and thats me saying as a member who has been here since 2005.

@KiriharaZro:

The argument to play a real sim soccer is only validated with inclusion of real teams is very flawed. One can argue that it helps add authenticity with real teams, but at the end of the day, a real football fan plays football for deep, rewarding gameplay regardless of the licencing. And nothing proved it better than ps2 era pes where everyone would agree with above sentiment. So yeah, licences help, but gameplay is the central aspect, and i give props to this review for keeping it as its central argument.

Props to Gamespot for bringing PES into light again. It IS better than FIFA in terms of gameplay, and for a footy game, gameplay is first and licencing is second. Glad to see gamespot prioritizing the core aspect of a game in this review. As a footy fan, we dont have much in terms of choices, but between two, i'd choose pes anyday.

As i said before, would you rather choose a racing game with cars with decals of famous/favorite brands but drives like shit ? or a racing game where there are not much flashy stuff but drives like a total joy ? I say the latter. GG gamespot.

Expect similar score for fifa because they have practically ignored offline career modes, no pro club improvements, minuscule gameplay changes (have played the beta). All they have focused is on MUT and FUT yet the reviewers neverhesitate to slap 8s and 9s for a full priced update.

Spot on again oscar. For years the licence has been brought into debate in reviews, you have take an bold step in reconsidering that and focused on one aspect that all sports game should be judged on, and that is gameplay.

PES has its issues but it excels in capturing the spirit. About other contents, they only augment the core of the game, ie gameplay. I hope you keep this balance and unbiasness along your reviews...you'll go a long way. GG

Spot on review, it was about time someone pointed out EAs bullshittery. Its the gameplay that matters, modes and contents in footy game can only get you so far. PES successfully catches the flow and thrill of the game, it is still lagging in several aspects. But if you are going to review a footy game based on its gameplay and how it feels, this is spot on.

@skippert: Because its still fifa at its core, okish gameplay that lacks depth and has momentum and handicapping online which devs refuse to acknowledge.

This lack of licence debacle in PES has been going on since the ps1 days. Its the same argument in literally every pes review. Reviewers have not been able to go beyond that. At its best, pes 2018 plays a brilliant game of football and that you cant find on fifa. It retains the pes spirit, but you can still see cracks in some technical aspects, like shots being too simplistic comapred to even pes 5. Fix those niggle and pes will be unbeatable in just gameplay department.

If you want to capture the real spirit of football, play pes, if you like all the bells, whistles, trading and modes, fifa is you go to game.

''FIFA has no major gameplay changes this year, but the bells and whistle alone makes it a must have'' - Gamespot.

If you are a hardcore footy fan who plays both fifa and pes every year, you can tell this review is honestly weak and based on few games and overall, ignores greater gamechanging features like adaptive AI and team individuality which plays a solid role in keeping the game dynamic/fresh to some extent, much like in real life.

How is master league hollow ? Did you try fluid formations ? Gameplay is amazing, but how ? Did you try ingame tactics like gegen press, swap wings ? Did they work ? Why is licencing even an issue when FIFA is clearly monopolizing ? And even knowing that, the review contradicts itself by mentioning OF that is still somehow not fulfilling ?

I hope fifa review is at least justified and well reasoned with, not just ''its there and it doenst work''. If Gamespot is going to freelance their reviews of sports game then might as well do some research on the reviewer.

So many issue mentioned without even answering them why.
