An amp will probably give you an improvement but 558s aren't that hard to drive so it won't be night and day.

Any recommendations for a cheap one that will drive them nicely (and it doesn't need to be a big difference, i just want to get the most of them)? Also, would it work well with the sound card MonsieurX or would it not be good because it has a built in amp? A sound card like the Xonar DG has both an amp and a DAC and will be better than onboard sound. It's a good option for the price (I have one too). To be honest the cheapest you'd pay for a worthwhile stand-alone amp would be £100 (Shiit Magni or O2). I agree with that. I have Xonar myself and works great.
