I think Rockstar North should relax more and just let Retailers dispatch their copies of the game as soon as they have them in stock of their warehouses. Rather than being ordered by Rockstar North to hold the stock back for a certain release date.
As the last couple of days have shown gamers in the States/Canada and Spain have managed to get hold of copies 3-5 days before the official release date of the games release.Â
GTA V is probably one of the biggest games of the year, I'm sure Rockstar North wanted it to be fair that everyone got the game the same day.
I'm not sure why Rockstar North were so protective in making sure retailers were releasing on the 17th. From a money point of view, they would have been no worse off if they had just allowed retailers to ship as soon as they received their stock.

Rockstar has little to nothing to do with games being relased, or games being obtained early, its completely dependant on the retail chains and big box stores, which push the tuesday release agenda in the US and Friday in western europe. There involvement is basically setting a date on which relase will happen based on development, and production. The reason games leak, has nothing to do with the develper, is the distribution chain & retail stores that leak it, they usually get shipments in 5-7 days early, but store them in back rooms. If a retailer breaks street date they end up paying a rather large fine, that can range into the millions of dollars based on how many units are sold. However what happens more often then not, is employees or distributers get copies early, because they are inside the production chain. In addition some retailers like amazon tend to ship out things early to meet the release date, and the UPS/Fed ex guys or mail delivers the items early.
If you want to blame someone, blame the retail chains, that persist in this silly street date nonsense, instead of doing soft launches, because until walmart , Gamestop, Best buy, and others change the way things are done, you will always be restricted to a set date, even though most retail chains get items well in advance, and could put them out on a thursday or friday, but refuse to because they want to get people returing to there store every tuesday to buy more meaningless crap along with the one item that just came out that week.
