This is a sad moment in Nintendo history, since Gamecube third party support has been awful, in Wii it was even worse, there were very lazy ports and sometimes a game was not ported at all. 3rd parties are to blame.
How come 3rd parties,one of the best-selling consoles, that everybody had didnt make the game for it, losing millions of sales????? Sure Wii was trying to get even more public (and did) offering games that everyone can play, but offered a cool way to play games in general and had some games that I consider best of all time. I also had a $500 PC (still use it, and plays BF3) 6 years ago, that is what kept me going only having Wii.
Now on the first year of Wii U, were offered lazy and low quality ports that not only have a lot of problems but also lack some features, on top of that, it is already losing exclusivity (also 3DS) on important games like RE: Revalations, Ninja Gaiden RE, Rayman Legends. This means a lot of lose in sales, people were thinking of buying a Wii U (or 3DS) just for these few games.
The worst part is titles Nintendo console owners wanted and requested never were given, and now with so little complaining, the owners of other consoles (having tons of games on their console) get these games.
One of my theories is that the other companies, being large companies, can efford ported games and exclusivity, leaving Nintendo (a company that only makes games) behind.
New consoles are coming, having more power than Wii U, but how much this difference of power is what matters. I really dont think we will see a large difference, and I hope 3rd parties continue making HD (current) games. (I read somewere that cost for making high quality games with a lot of graphics is expensive and doesnt make that much of a profit). I think with the current consoles, games are fine. Only people who care about graphics and not gameplay will buy these new consoles (a lot of people). And if gameplay changes, I think they will follow Nintendo into having a new controller and media system. I wont even mention phones, tablets, etc. Current consoles still have a lot to go though.

This is what I think will happen: These new consoles are aiming to have big sales offering new tecnology to make games BUT take in mind that game developers are stuck right now. The costs of making games is too high when using current gen consoles and the companies are having trouble making the game profitable. I think that the launch of these consoles is not nessesary, having a PC that can handle almost any kind of game at a lower cost would be a problem to these consoles. This is why I think Nintendo make a smart move, knowing HD was out didn't use it on Wii because that way they could make another console having HD (Wii U) and offer its first party games with amazing graphics. Nintendo can now wait (5-6 years) for a real change in graphics and gameplay to be created and launch a console with it. Plus, having a very unique console, PC gamers can not experience that gameplay.
In conclution I think we have enough with the launch of Wii U while they (Developers) create new tecnology to make games really change (When 4K TVs are commertial and people actually can buy it, I think around 4-6 years) and have amazing graphics and creative gameplay.
I can see in the future Nintendo having the only dedicated videogame console BUT with hardware made with Sony (LIke before) and a windows based OP system and online service, and of course the creative and inovating ideas of Nintendo and their games. I think that way developers will not have trouble selling games, giving more content and variety in one system, that will make us gamers happy!!!!!
