I wasn't acting like TLoU had the first great story in a video game, even if it is one of the best though IMHO.
Other games had great stories too like the Original Dragon Age, Planescape: Torment, Mass Effect, KoTOR, Bioshock,, Freedom Force, Uncharted (especially the characterizations), Walking Dead, etc. Any one of these IMHO, still would rate higher than a Zelda game, regardless of the mobility factor (I have nothing against handhelds, wife even bought me a Vita go figure).
I am also a big fan of the old JRPG's mostly old Squaresoft games like FF, Chrono, Xenogears and some other Atlus (SMT Digital Devil Saga) and some of Enix's DQ series, most of these too had better stories. I'm presently buying/loading most of 'em on the Vita in case I do want to use the thing.
I just think game of the year should be a more well rounded title, not just for the gameplay. I want story, soundtrack, etc to matter just as much in such a prestigious title.
@razorfett147 -- I'm still a tiny bit older. :)
@bunchanumbers --- anything CONSTRUCTIVE to add to this discussion maybe?
@abHS4L88 Maybe because most of us want deeper story and not just great gameplay.
TLoU for example gave us all of it with a riveting story. If you have the hack and slash style of play, you could hack through the game, more stealthy approach? Sure, I even stealthed past the tough double large infected monster encounter close to the end. Like to tinker? Check, you can craft/upgrade some stuff while you're at it too. TLoU catered to a broader base of players, there is something for everyone here.
Phasing into a wall and moving through it every now and then (Zelda) doesn't really measure up.
I did play The Last of Us. I never said anything about IGN either (not too fond of their site in general). I think Overall the video about Last of Us at Gamesradar is perfect to describe why many of us liked TLoU. It's not Game of the Century as another here put it, but it's now in my top 5 console games/franchises (probably #2 as Dead Space 3 was a tad of a let down).
I just thought that someone who thought it was average wouldn't even agree with an 8.5 score, unless of course, you didn't play the game.
You didn't have to edit your Gears avatar btw :). GoW was enjoyable.
Bioshock, The Last of Us, Assassin's Creed 4 (although not a big fan of the franchise), or even episode 1 of Walking Dead season 2 (late as it is) are more deserving.
The 13 and under crowd will likely disagree with me. TBH, I'm a Nintendo fan from the old days of the original NES up to giving the Wii a shot last year or so. I've always loved the Zelda and Metroid franchises (which prompt my Nintendo console buys I might add) but this as game of the year? No.
The only thing that will save GS is some new blood reviewers. Until then, I delete an IE favorite and read elsewhere.
@Deathsmiles76 Gears had a great story? Gears had about as much of a great story as typical FPS like Rage or the original Unreal for PC. To me it was like reading an image comic like "Deathblow", not much story but pretty to look at. To each their own. I don't have to like Gears to be true gamer. I also didn't like Halo IV or Reach (they are pretty to look at though) and I've been into vid games since Pong and the 2600.
You are either really young or just another X-box fanboy. GoW is a pretty much mindless 3P shooter. Uncharted has better story, characters, voice actors, gameplay etc. I gave Gears 1-3 along with my Xbox to my 20 yo daughter.
