Hack n slash games are dead. There era of being crowd pleasers has gone. No-one wants to play them anymore. The only way they can re-invent themselves is become big budgeted blockbusters titles. The concept of hack n slash has also got to be reinvented.
With The Last Of Us on the brink of changing of the videogaming industry, hack n slash games will have to up their ante if they want to capture the imagination of their audience.
I don't really think people truly understand the significance of this game. If you actually study it then you'll see things that will change the face of TPS/adventure games forever.
Like how "difficult" it can be to aim and shoot when holding an enemy as a human shield. Past games like Gears of War actually make it "easy" to do it.
The "flexibility" of the cover system. Taking cover is no longer about popping up and shooting, you can take look around the area near you (without simply turning the camera as you take cover).
The enemies are responsive to what you do. If you have an empty gun, they will respond in kind and hunt you down.
You can make weapons and such in "real time". No more weapons and such popping up from thin air after you've joined them in the menu screen.
