I've been reading a lot in this thread so far, but not all and I still have a question just to be sure. Here it goes (sorry if it's already been asked and answered, but 65 pages is a lot to read): I want to connect a PS3 to my pc monitor, cause i don't have the big money for a HDMI tv. It's a Lacie 120LCD (connections: 1 x DVI-D, 1 x VGA D-Sub / resolution: 1600 x 1200 (UXGA)) I know that there are adapters that can convert from one connection to an other. But which is the best way to do this? HDMI to dvi-d? or to vga? and what about the resolution? sorry is if this all is been answered before, but I just want to be sure. Thanks!Entity83

Go with DVI-D.  It is easier to get an adaptor from HDMI to DVI-D and they go for about $5.  Resolution should be what your monitor is capable of.  I doubt 1080p from PS3 will work, since it is 1920x1080, but you can try since the monitor can handle 1200p.  Worst case scenario you are playing at 720p.  We have yet to see how PS3 is going to handle resolutions and screen setups.

[QUOTE="iiiiiiiiiii"]

on here it says that crt's need regular maintenance, what type of  "maintenance" would this be exactly?

chris891992

Im wondering the same thing.

Calibration of geometry, focus and color.  They are analog after all :D  You do it when needed, as in every 6 months for color (every month if you are paranoid like me :D ) and geometry and focus when needed, which could be a lot longer than every other year.

Just made a thread below about this, but I'm posting it here since it is related and "needs" to be sticky :D

PS3 supports BILLIONS of colors - HDMI 1.3

Don't rush out to buy a HD set just yet :D

Can i run a 20 gig PS3 in HD on this TV?

americahellyeah

yes. and the best part is the ps3 will probably come with the component cables you need to play your games in HD on that tv.

but for the record, a 60 gig ps3 with HDMI would look better

thanks for your help.  How much better would it look if i ran it in HDMI? very noticeable or just slightly?

There shouldn't be any difference, unless you are using cheap component cables, or the movie has been resolution limited by the studio (only plays HD over digital HDMI )

http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?sku_id=0665000FS10064895&catid=23518&logon=&langid=EN Is this a good TV to get? It seems like good value for the price (CDN, by the way)-Purity

It is cheap.  I don't know the exchange rate with US$ but it looks cheap.  Doesn't mention DVI or HDMI inputs.  It is 720p if you are OK using component or a VGA adaptor (since it has VGA input).  It will display your PS3 in HD if that's what you want to know.  It is OK if you are on a budget.

Brain_Failure77, you rang?

Also, what do you guys think about this link that says you can turn a 13"-19" monitor into a 100" display?

Those suck!  Don't waste your money on those worthless "plans"  Basically just a mirror, a lens and the TV you have as a projector.  Not a lot of light coming out of the TV, so all you get is a dim picture.  Don't believe the pictures they post on their site.

Are all Plasma TVs and LCD TVs are HDTVs?

M_22

Not all are, and be specially wary of cheap plasmas that are labeled as EDTV (480p only).  They are NOT HDTV sets.  I've even seen one that has a HD TV tuner but the display is EDTV (what's the point?)

Does the Ps3 contain a DVI connection? Neontope

No, but you can buy a DVI-HDMI adaptor for about $5.

Whats a good contrast ratio for a tv. This one i want has 1300:1

This is the tv
Pablo620

Pablo, for contrast ratios, the higher the better.  Nothing beats CRT in this area yet (unlimited contrast ratio, due to analog nature), not even expensive plasma.  That Bravia is a very nice set, and 1300:1 is common for a LCD, although there are better ratios out there (cost more too)

ok, so i heard that you can use your pc monitor as screen. that would (for me) be very delightfull since i have a 20 inch widescreen monitor. the question is... i have a macintosh, does anyone know if you can plug it into a mac? cuz i know that mac has less capabilities in these things as the pc has.kjartanf

The things you have to look for are:

1.Does your Mac have VGA or DVI outputs?  You should have one or both if you have a new Mac.

2.Is the monitor a VGA or DVI type?  If so, a component to VGA or HDMI to DVI adaptor should do the trick to connect a PS3 to your monitor.  You could also get a switch box to select the source and avoid plugging and unplugging the monitor.
