I just go with one rule: If you can pick out 5 games that you must buy which are exclusive to a certain system (Halo 3 only on 360, Uncharted 2 only on PS3, for example), then buy that system.
Aren't you worried that it is the cheapest Blu-Ray player you can find? The 360 had a seperate HD DVD drive for one simple reason: Playing DVD's on your console wears out the DVD drive and breaks down. Xbox owners learned that years ago. Have fun when your $600 Blu-Ray player breaks down and Sony shruggs and says, "Tough."
How about adding a screw-in joystick like the Neo Geo pocked did? That would make playing Street Fighter a lot better. It's is near to impossible to pull off any special moves on the d-pad or the analog.
Just go with the five game rule. You must have five games that you would play on that system, that would not be available on a rival console. If it is available on a rival system, there must be a signifigant difference - in quality or content, to be able to be included in the choice of five games. Surpassing five games is more than worth the purchace as it is the games that make a console great. Not the marginally better specs. I just pray that somebody remakes Assault Suit Leynos or Zillion. Please?
