Minecraft and Hotline Miami. Besides those I would recommend Torchlight series, Project Zomboid and Xenonauts.

Depends on the game. If you are someone that enjoys games for a challenge and the satisfaction of beating something (unlike sandbox games like RCT or Gmod) you need a fail (death) system. Hotline Miami and Demon's / Dark Souls come to mind.

Chrono Chross. I deeply love everything about that game. I would chill on the tropical beaches, sail the seas, hang out in the forests and the waterfall, highfive a mermaid, walk around the towns with beautiful architecture and marry a girl from my dreams.

I was really put off from the gameplay video's I saw about it, but I bought it anyway because I got annoyed at how bad TB was at the game and wanted to prove to myself that I would do better. I was instantly hooked, and it's in my top 3 games of the year. It's one of the few games that can truely make me go into fanboy- mode when people complain about it. But I'll try to behave :P opinions are opinions, I'm sorry to hear you didn't enjoy it. I personally loved the extremely fast gameplay with split second decisions.

I grew up with both but liked Sonic more. He was just more badass.

Some parents are like that, sucks but what can ya do. Save up for your own pc or move out at age 18. Or maybe a talk and some info can convince him otherwise, but don't hurt your relationship with him over videogames. He probably has his own justified reasons to protect you.

I'm going to second Hotline Miami, it's really good, though it doesn't use the usual level structure and gameplay type other top down shooters often have.

There are hardly any games that even fall into that category. Anways Deus Ex by a long shot. The original with texture mods and shifter.

Grimlim
This, you're being way too specific. Scifi rpg is a really underused combination of genre's nowadays. Your choices are pretty much Deus Ex, Mass Effect, Borderlands, Fallout. Remove the rpg requirement and you can probably find another few scifi shooters.

'Gem' is such a dodgy word nowadays, everyone seems to have a different meaning for it. In terms of relatively unknown and / or not high selling but good- games I'd say Apache Air Assault and Lost Planet 2.
