Yeah, hiccups are a spasm of the diaphram, a muscle that separates the lungs from the abdominal organs and facilitates breathing.
I use a kind of self-hypnosis. I concentrate on the diaphragm, telling it to relax. Sometimes it works.
I posted several links in an earlier post re the Channel 4 (UK) movie, The Great Global Warming Swindle; at the bottom of the list was this link re Gore's movie,An Inconvenient Truth. Perhaps it bears repeating.

Unfortunately I can't seem to find the video for The Great Global Warming Swindle. It was likely taken down since there seems to be a DVD release now. That's too bad because it does a great job presenting the other side of the global warming controversy. It is important that people see both sides of the argument before making their decision on global warming. If I find a new link to the video I'll be sure to post it here.gmw1082

I'm a Nam vet, but consider myself very lucky in that I was wounded and sent home after only 6 wks in country. Consequently, I don't have a lot of bad memories. I spent a lot of time in an Army hospital, however, and while I wasn't wounded all that badly, I saw an awful lot of poor bastards that were.
I've played several WW2 games and especially like CoH, but I don't play Vietnam games--it just doesn't seem right. However, I do feel a bit guilty playing war games of any kind (or PC games in general considering my age--lol).
I'm sure a particular vet's feelings would have a lot to do with the level and nature of violence he/she has experienced.
It's only relatively recently that alcoholism has come to be viewed (correctly) as a disease. Alcoholics have historically been looked down on because it was seen as a matter of willpower, and lack of willpower was equated with weakness. This is now known to be an oversimplification of a difficult physical problem, usually genetic in origin.
Re MichaeltheCM's post: hmmmm in some cultures it isnt but for some reason it is in Western culture. who knows !, a Dr. Milar (Milan?) in his book Under the Influence points out that Jews and Italians have a low rate of alcholism, Northern Europeans have a pretty high rate, and Native Americans an extremely high rate. The first group has had alcohol in their culture for thousands of years, the second for about 1500 years, and Native Americans for a few hundred. As I understand it, Eastern Asians can become rather violently ill from drinking too much.
I would seriously recommend Milar's book to all, but especially to those who have a propensity to overachieve!
