Obviously, gaming is not quite up to the advanced level where it can create a story as engrossing, deep, and intricate as a Shakesperian play or an extremely well-written drama. Think about it; when you're playing a game, how much of what your playing is unscripted? How much time does a game devote to pure story, such as cutscenes or pre-scripted dialogue? If a game were to incorporate all the dialogue and nuance of a sophisticated drama, it would have to be longer, larger, and in development for perhaps hundreds of times longer than your average game, something that the current limits of sales demands and technology would not allow. However, I think it's far from impossible for a game to have a truly engrossing naarative. Matter of fact, I think when video games get to the point where we can interact with our characters on a nearly personal level, when technology and brilliant writing can bring characters like Romeo, Beowulf, Julius Ceaser, Merlin and Arthur to life; (think functioning 3D and deep, multi-fasceted choices a la Fallout 3, Mass Effect and Heavy Rain) video games may very well become the greatest medium for telling stories that ever existed.
