I'm sure he realizes this, and that doesn't even remotely contradict what he was saying. High profile developers are WORTH MORE in the same way that Will Smith is worth more than someone who has only just gotten their first acting job.
Sure, but that's not the publisher's fault. They aren't running a charity, they're trying to get the best deal just the same as the developers are. If a developer is so desperate that they have to take whatever S***ty deal they get offered, then that developer is clearly worth exactly what they get.
Then...I guess those developers aren't worth more a better deal. All you're doing now is stating that many developers CAN'T negotiate better deals for themselves. But that right there just validates the idea that they aren't worth better. Regardless of WHY they can't negotiate a better deal, they still apparently can't negotiate a better deal. So by what reasoning should they GET a better deal?
That's irrelevant. If you're willing to settle for a crappy deal because you think negotiating for better is too risky, then that's on you. You're devaluing your own work.
Sure, they're different sets of skills. They're also both very important, and anyone who focuses solely on one or the other is shooting themselves in the foot. You're worth what people are willing to pay you, having good creative skills doesn't entitle you to work and it doesn't entitle you to a good contract. If you can't negotiate a good deal for yourself, then you're not worth it.
I agree in individual cases. If a game portrays women in a certain way, I don't think that's a big issue. However, when sexism is so rampant across an entire industry, that IS a problem. We're no longer talking about just a story, it ends up becoming part of the cultural landscape.
Here's one thing though: I wonder how much sexism in games actually PERPETUATE sexism, as opposed to merely being SYMPTOMS of rampant sexism in society at large. To a very large extent, I'd bet that much sexism in games exists because of sexism in society, rather than the other way around. So in that sense, I sort of feel like fighting sexism in games is sort of like treating an open sore. Sure, that's good, but it ultimately won't amount to much if the only reason you're getting open sores is because you have the plague.
