Wh--, why?

Suppose we are some part of some kind of virtual reality/simulation run by a supercomputer? It would be entirely feasible, especially if you consider that even humanity might have some ultra advanced quantum suer computers some day that would have many times more "thinking power" than humanty combined. (especially if we go with the "supercomputer makes better supercomputer which in turn makes a better one and so on." If that were done, then the supecomputers would get to a stage far above anything humanity could have ever done.) Or maybe we were all created by a bored supercomputer who was left to tend to his creator races' physical bodies whle they themselves ascended into digital/Virtual Reality glory. If you think about it, beneath the surface of everything in the universe there are laws which dictate how everything will be and work, kind of like in videogame. Admittedly there are many laws we don't know the specifics of yet, but that doesn't mean they don't exist (Although you could also say that all those lawsare just humans connecting the dots...)
