It's CNN. That tells us exactly how seriously we should take this. /picardfacepalm

@Chernnunos: No one would be complaining about diversity, least of all me, if SJWs hadn't been so obnoxious over the past few years in pushing their identity politics. Now every time we see diversity in a cast, we cannot help but shudder and wonder if there's an unwelcome political agenda behind it all. That's the world that SJWs have given us, and I hate it.

This is coming from someone who had absolutely no issues with a black commander (Sisko) a female captain (Janeway) and a black Vulcan (Tuvok). Even the TNG Trill episode kiss didn't bother me. Someone beam me up and send me back to the 90s where progressivism was sane and cool.

@uninspiredcup: In fairness, the DS9 pilot was 2 hours, while the Discovery pilot was only one. There's only so much you can do in 44 minutes. That said, the Discovery pilot had pretty good pacing, and the editing was tight. There's potential here going forward. The question is whether people are willing to follow the show through a VERY ill-advised paywall. It would be sad if the show failed just because of that. (What are these CBS execs smoking?)

I get the impression this ranking is based more on "identity" than actual quality. That alone makes the list highly suspect, and Gamespot being owned by CBS doesn't help.

Certainly the production values for Discovery are a great asset, but the show is held back by awkward acting. This is a typical problem with pilots, but DS9 and Voyager held their own remarkably well in the opening hours. Putting Discovery ahead of those two pilots just doesn't pass objective scrutiny.

@atopp399: XV is much better than a lot of people claim. The gameplay is engaging enough to be fun, and the camaraderie between the characters helps bring life to the world. The main issue is that the story is presented in a way that is very difficult to follow without looking at outside sources. Taken as a complete package, though, XV is a worthy mainline entry. Given the turmoil of the game's development cycle, I'm frankly amazed that it turned out as well as it did.

I hope there will be the option of English subtitles during combat. I love the Japanese voice cast, but I need subtitles to understand them.

@Runeweaver: I'm in the U.S. and I'm having the same issue. I get a message that says "This content cannot be selected at this time." Strange, because I downloaded the 4+ gb update. What gives?

@czlapaj2: It's true that in the old days white people were cast in roles that were completely different, ethnically speaking. But in fairness to the Hollywood of the time, certain ethnicities just weren't available in large enough numbers in the acting profession to cast in major projects. You could probably count the number of Mongolian men who could speak English on a single hand back in those days.

I actually don't have a problem with this, so long as this kind of stance is applied to all fictional characters with no bias one way or the other. For example, I very much disagree with the ethnicity change for Hermione Granger in the recent Harry Potter play. That felt completely unnecessary and forced in order to make a political statement. I would feel equally miffed if B.A. from "The A Team" were recast as anything but a black man. Diversity is a good thing, but it should never be artificially imposed to satisfy the current political flavor of the month. Keep characters as the ethnicity they were initially portrayed as, and no one should have any conflict one way or the other.
