The problem isn't the roguelite part, but the 'restart from the beginning' part. The patience, repetition and training required to enjoy the mode are enough to pick up a new real life skill.
IO paid a steep price for its arrogance by opting for design decisions that cater mainly for elite players. It's a sad day, but it's also an important lesson for IO on market reality and broad appeal, esp if you want to work with a publisher like Square Enix.
