You have to register your copy of Zelda Phantom Hourglass on Nintendo.com to have a chance to receive the stylus. Once you register your game, you should receive an email to a link to take a survey. Once you complete the survey, it will ask you to confirm your address. After that, you just have to wait for an email stating that your stylus is on its way as it will take up to 6 weeks.

I'm not Canadian, but I'll be nice to search for you. I see that BestBuy.ca has the game for $34.99.

Don't know if this is true or not, but I heard from someone that GameStop tends to sell games they open to use as demos in their demo stations, so could it have been a demo?

If your son has played previous Zelda games and liked them, get Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. Plus, there is a secret bonus when you buy the game by registering it at Nintendo.com. If you complete a survey (really short) they will send a Feather Stylus. You can read about the details in this thread:

PH is a really good game as it used the stylus more than the control pads/buttons.

If your son has played any of the Metroid games and liked them, get Metroid. I myself don't own the game, so I can really give you my opinion.
