I've just watched a video of GamesCon on Utube, and a game that I hadn't heard about caught my eye. It was called Risen, and it looked like a kind of hard-core version of Oblivion. It looked pretty cool.

I'm going to start following you. Wow. You nailed it again. Even before the damned game was released.

I agree with everything you wrote - and yet the game seems to be more than the sum of its parts? I believe that Dragon Age WILL put this game to shame, but Risen is still a really fun RPG (if somewhat limited).

I was late to the party for Dead Space - and for that reason the game had been a bit hyped for me. (For people who played it on release day, or thereabouts, I believe that Dead Space was a bit of a sleeper hit).

But when your expectations are elevated there's a greater chance that you're going to feel let down. I can only say that I made it to the end of chapter one, but that I never advanced beyond that. I keep on meaning to play it, but other games are getting in the way.

You know, I kind of agree - Dead Space is a bit over-rated.

I'm starting to get nervous.

Even five years ago you could walk into any Future Shop or EB Games store on day one and buy a collector's edition without having a pre-order. In the past year though I've seen a noticeable decline in the availability of PC games at these two stores. I don't see either store even advertising the collector's edition. Even Amazon.ca, which would be my last choice, since it would drastically delay the arrival of the game, isn't listing the collector's edition.

I bought Batman off Steam, and I'm glad I did, because it took The Future Shop a full week to get the game in stock.

Preferably, on day one, I'd like to buy the collector's edition of the game, and the collector's edition game-guide as well. There's nothing like buying a game on day one and playing alongside everyone else in the world. Because of the internet, and forums such as this, there's a genuine sense of being in the moment when this happens. Anybody else out there looking to buy the collector's edition (I covet the cloth map and the tin box).

4 chapters. Most people are saying that they're finished after 25 hours. (The amount of time you've played for is displayed on your save-file). That's not a bad thing, because if you really like the game, then you can return and play again as a different character. Let's face it, in Baldur's Gate 2, it's difficult to play as more than one character since the game is so long. I'm not saying I would want every single-player RPG to be short (I wouldn't want Dragon Age to be short, for example - that game needs to feel epic) but every once and a while it's a nice change of pace. It's also nice to finish the game!

25 hours?? I'm near that and only in the start of Chapter 2.

That's what some people are saying - 25 hours. (One guy said 20 hours.) I don't know how close I am to finishing Chapter One, but I've played for 11 hours so far. My understanding however is that Chapter 4 (somebody correct me if I'm wrong about this) isn't a real chapter - it's really just the final end-boss fight. If that's true, then you should budget for 3 chapters. Also, I believe that the first chapter is by far the longest (again, somebody correct me if I'm wrong). But nevertheless, I think it's safe to say that we're not looking at an RPG here that's epic in length. Sure, some people will spend 75 hours playing Risen. But if we're going to take our time, and play the game like that, then I could artificially extend any RPG's length - using that model, I could probably get a good 150 to 200 hours out of Baldur's Gate or even Oblivion. Ah well, this is still just a warmup for Dragon Age. (Don't get me wrong though, it's turning out to be a very enjoyable experience indeed.)

Yeah, I have to admit, although this game is seriously flawed, it's completely sucked me in. As soon as I got in from work I just went straight to my PC and ate dinner right there while I played.

I could name a dozen things wrong with this game - easily - and yet I'm playing for hours non-stop. Weird.

Because the series strengths - atmosphere and an immersive world, has sucked you in, regardless of the rest. We hate to say we told you so but....

I don't mind being wrong. But there are some pretty big flaws with this game that would make it even better if they weren't there. I want to finish the game before I start posting about it, but I've got a list that's still growing.

Wow, just 10 strength.

People over at the forum are talking about using special potions to advance beyond the 100 point level cap (which means that it's not really a cap) by using potions. Some people claim to have a strength of 200!

The combat is very RPGish in nature, in that you kind of do need to level up correctly.

It's very hack and slash - but I like it a lot. Different weapons need to be handled accordingly. Using a sledgehammer, for example, is much different than using a sword. With a sledgehammer, at Level Two Axes, you have a power-up, which takes longer to perform, but is much more effective when it strikes. The animation for this is drawn out, so you have to wind up before your opponent starts to advance. One on one, with single fighters, the sledgehammer attack can be extremely powerful if timed appropriately. In fact, I was unable to defeat one of the more difficult fighters, until I switched over to the sledgehammer.

Most animals, I find, tend to strike more rapidly, so for those I tend to revert to a sword and shield. The trick here is to shield yourself until the animal attacks, and then right away you strike back in rapid succession until the animal goes down.

Each weapon has a different level associated with it, and at each level you're provided with a new type of attack - Level Three Axes, for example, allows you to perform a side-swipe maneuver, which can be used in combination with other types of attack. It works well.

I'm zooming the camera out on my character, and holding down the right mouse button to block. While blocking, the character will automatically swivel around and follow the NPC you're engaged in combat with. It's quite a bit of fun, actually.
