When Squaresoft was financially "ill", Sony did invest a huge amount of money (I don't know the exact numbers, but if I remember well, it was 30% or 10% of the company). That financial effort made FFX and FFXII exclusive to PS2, so I think Sony still has some influence around Square. It's like: "main" games (FFX, FFXII) will be PS exclusives and other games don't really matter (Cristal Chronicles, FFXI).
You can say that FF7 "belongs" to Sony, if you are talking about exclusivity, but the game is owned by Square, so they can even release it on Super Nintendo if they like. Actually, it wouldn't surprise me if an FF7 remake was to be launched on the 360, but it really makes more sense on the PS3 (at least you can be sure that if it is released it will be on the PS3). It wouldn't surprise me if the FF7 original game comes on the PS Network and Wii Virtual Console...
