I very much enjoyed playing Primal. The story, graphics, music and artwork are astounding. The puzzles are quite challenging and the way the developers have created them is quite innovative. The only place this game might need some touching up is the gameplay. The story in Primal is a large part of the game. You follow two characters, Jen and Scree, around the worlds of Oblivion to restore the balance between Order and Chaos. The camaraderie between the two characters is highly entertaining and sometimes downright hilarious. The acting by the voice actors is wonderful too. Especially for people who will recognize the actors who played Calisto from Xena: Warrior Princess and G’Kar from Babylon 5. The details in graphics in this game are quite good. One item that really impressed me was the motion capture. It wasn’t the fighting or running. It was Jen standing on a stairway. She had one foot on one step and the other on the step below it. I stopped her there and she posed in this position. This little detail blew me away. The music in the game is awesome. They got an LA band, 16 Volt, to record and write songs for the game. Not only that but the game has a beautiful background score recorded by the Prague Philharmonic. The game is more of a puzzle/adventure game then an action game. Though it doesn’t shirk in the action department. The puzzles come in the form of using Jen and Scree’s different abilities to move forward through the story. Scree is able to scale stonewalls, light lamps, carry heavy objects, and heal Jen. Jen is the usually the firepower and shifts forms to gain her demonic powers. She can swim, timeshift, perform REALLY high jumps and get into places Scree doesn’t fit. The gameplay is the only item that this game maybe lacking in. I felt in some cases Jen should be moving faster. In her form that gains athletic ability she I felt she didn’t move smoothly and powerfully enough. I also felt the fighting controls were not coordinated enough. Mostly you just smash buttons. Also Jen has the ability to do stealth kills. Sadly I never found an enemy I could sneak up on so I didn’t get to use it. The fighting is fun in that all her different forms have cool energy weapons. If you like puzzles, adventure, a good story, gorgeous music and a wee bit of action then this is the game for you. A must try or buy. I hope you guys like it. I PRAY there is a sequel.
