It isn't revolutionary, but Black is the best Pokemon title since Silver was released 10 years ago.

I'm sure you know the deal by now. 150 new creatures to catch, hours of grinding, the evil Team so-and-so, and the best part of the game - Gyms. Pokemon makes changes, and they are big. Its my favorite Pokemon game since Silver, but Game Freak still needs to do more to really breathe life back into this franchise.

A few notable differences stand out. The world is alive, bustling, and a lot of fun to explore. There are seasons, giant bridges where you'll cross into uncharted lands and cities, and the game really goes out of its way to let you know that you are on an epic adventure. Everything feels so crisp and alive compared to the so-so upgrades from Pokemon Pearl.

This time there's a story to follow. The diabolical Team Plasma is by far the most stand-out villain group in the series, and their leader is a mysterious and cunning adversary. There were a few times where I forgot I was playing Pokemon, because the main man behind Team Plasma has enough mystique and power to pass for an early Final Fantasy villain.

The things that need the most changes haven't shifted much. Catching pokemon is the same, battles are the same, and the famous 3-on-3 battles don't show up until after gym 5. Pokemon Black has shifted its world into a living breathing success story, and its a shame that the gameplay mechanics aren't as groundbreaking.

So its familiar with a fresh coat of paint. If you love Pokemon you'll love it. Simple as that. That said, I want to stress that this is the best Pokemon game I have played in a LONG time. If you loved Gold/Silver and have been disappointed with the games that lead up to this point, I highly recommend you give Black a shot.

I hear White is the better game, but I enjoyed Black just fine.

Don't expect to be pulled in like the good old days, but Black and White are definitely the new Gold and Silver.

Thumbs up.
