Phantom 2040 will show you what the SNES can really do; but it does have it's faults.

User Rating: 8.1 | Phantom 2040 SNES
Phantom 2040 is a very underappreciated game based on a very underappreciated cartoon series. It's a futuristic sidescrolling shooter with lot's of suprises and challenges. It starts out with something you don't see in your SNES alot; an in-game movie. You'll run into them throughout every level, and though the writing won't blow you away, it's a really neat feature that few games of the era had. The gameplay seems simple at first, but it really is complex. There are lots of different weapons to unlock, and they all get you past different obstacles. Phantom also has a little grappling hook right from the start, which is really fun to mess around with. It can atach itself to almost anything, and you can use it to climb up buildings to find hidden suprises, or to cross large gaps, or even cling on to the villain's ship. The graphics are very moody, and fit the game well. Things look a tad pixaleted, and the game experiences slowdown when lots of explosions take place. But the animations are good and the backgrounds are top notch. The music is very well done, but the sound effects aren't as good. The replay value is incredible. Never has a SNES game crammed this much replayability into one cartridge. Not only are their 60 levels, there are multiple different endings, which are all a great blast to watch. Though I've praised Phantom 2040 this whole time, it has one humongous fault. A game this long shouldn't use a password system, especially one this complicated. It's very badly done and herendously hard to use.
I'd say Phantom 2040 is perfect for you if you're a fan of the cartoon series or superhero shows in general. Also, if you like a challenge and a long lasting game, you shouldn't miss this one either.
