A True Hall of Famer, Phantasy Star II stands as one of the greatest games of all time.

User Rating: 9.7 | Phantasy Star II: Kaerazaru Toki no Owari ni GEN
Thumbing through the battle-worn "hint guide" stirs fond memories of immensely complex labrynths and the emotional plot found in this stirring adventure. Phantasy Star II engages the emotion on a level rarely found in video games. The player actually cares about the characters in their party, and the legendary fall of Nei stands as one of the most compelling story twists in video game history.

Everything about Phantasy Star II is exceptional: the graphics, sound, story, characters, items, quests, artistic style, foes, and endgame comprise a true masterpiece. If this game released tomorrow on the Nintendo DS, it would likely be a hit, but when you consider it was released 17 YEARS AGO, you know you're dealing with a legend.

This game predates the "Action RPG" in that combat is strictly turn-based and the player controls the combat strategy, not the actually swordplay. RPG purists will enjoy this title today if they can find a working Genesis or by the graces of emulation (it emulates very well). Be warned, without the hint tome that was packaged with the original cartridge, this game is exceedingly difficult, though dungeon maps can be located on the internet.

It will take you quite a while to get to the end of this lengthy adventure, but after you've collected all the Moon Dew and Star Mist your party can carry, and lay waste to hordes of Archdragons and Tracerbots, you'll be in for one of the greatest endings in video game history. Two major end bosses, both thrilling in combat, and a suprise ending that delivers a great reward for all your hard work.

The so-called "Eastern" RPGs owe a lot to this title. If you are a fan of the Final Fantasy series and are looking for some Old Skool action, give Phantasy Star II a try - it is an incredible game.
