What's next for BioShock Infinite dev?

"I don't have a thought for our next game," Irrational Games creative director and cofounder Ken Levine says.

After years of development and multiple delays, BioShock Infinite is due out worldwide next week. But what's next for its Quincy, Mass. developer Irrational Games?

Creative director and studio cofounder Ken Levine doesn't know.

Responding to a question about whether or not he is excited about the arrival of next-generation platforms and the new features and capabilities they bring, Levine told GameSpot, "I don't have a thought for our next game, so it's kind of hard to even think about that."

The Irrational Games careers page lists 13 open positions across a range of disciplines and experience levels. In addition, the company recently hired former Epic Games producer Rod Fergusson as executive vice president of development.

No System Shock 3 please... There's no way it would hold up to our expectations (Simply because to sell the idea to a publisher you'd have to "modernize" it and "streamline" the gameplay), and I don't want my perfect memories ruined.

PS - "Bioshock in space" I'd be happy with - No Shodan, no hacker, no nothing from System Shock - let it have its own story.

This was kind of a funny article.  "Ken what are your plans for your next project?"

"dunno"

kind of a weird question, irrational is always working on something but he's not going to tell you anything, why would he? my guess is the title will have a number at the end.

How many more times do I have to say it?

System shock 3

I WANT MORE SHODAN

@peripatos

System shock is Bioshock in space.  If you've never played it have a look on the web.  It was king.  It wasn't just a shooter it had RPG elements in it as well.  It was made by a company called Looking glass, and guess who developed it. Yes, Ken Levine.

Silicon Knights should sell the rights of Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem to Levine in their final act before going out of business.  Imagine what he could to with that game, one of the best ever to not get a sequel.

I'd like a Bioshock prequel that takes place in the days just before, and during, the time when Rapture fell to shit.

I have an idea: Freedom Force 3.  The Cliffhanger in 2 left me hanging.

He's not going to do another Bioshock, he has a vision for it and he was gonna stop after the first. This idea came to mind then. He is a visionary he won't do another. Doesn't mean there won't be another though. 2K will most likely rip off his title like they did with that piece of crap Bioshock 2. The only true Bioshock games are those made with the support of Levine.

Do yourself a favor and don't do another FPS.

@Nibraybirk. I would consider BioShock Infinite a first person adventure with shooting elements not an fps

@Nibraybirk It's the most immersive medium to tell a game story from.

ZachBobBob

@SythisTaru @Nibraybirk Since when? Any medium can be immersive as another? It depends how you utilise that genres strengths and weaknesses to tell the story.

How about Bioshock in space?  Maybe a Doctor Strange Love-esque moon colony set in the 1950s?

@peripatos It's called System Shock. Bioshock is a spiritual successor to it. It had everything that make all the Shocks great; horror, audio journals that piece together the chaos, and you even made a background for your character. He was either a Marine, Naval Officer, or a Psy-ops agent physic powers (plasmids in Biochock terms).

Check it out, it still hold up to this day.

Wow, what a thought provoking article. Eddie if there is nothing to post, DONT POST.

on topic, if BS:I is as good as it looks, i hope that ken will take that success to other new games and ideas. Im fine with series but i miss when there is a great one off game that id unique.  Best of luck to irrational.

I love how the two comments bellow me talk about system shock 3 In completely different ways... I feel Neutral about system shock 3. It could be good or it could destroy its legacy.

@JustinRiden I like how the comment above you talks about wanting a unique one of a kind game instead of a series, where as almost everyone else is talking about a sequel for this or that game.

Another Cyberpunk RPG would be nice, System Shock is owned by EA and other investors, but I doubt he lacks the imagination to think of another cyberpunk setting in space.

@MAD_AI

I thought it was owned by a Bank? And then they allowed a company to resell the old games on PC. But I could be wrong.

@Generic_Dude I read recently that development of that has been stalled as Take Two and Sony continue to iron out the deal.

@Generic_Dude I hope you're kidding. I doubt Bioshock Vita will be done by Irrational and Levine. Sort of like how the Uncharted Vita wasn't done by Naughty Dog.

@pdfanboy @billlabowski What's the problem about it? If people were excited to make a new SS, the rights can always be found and acquired especially since whoever holds them now (EA?) has no interest in them.

@GamerOuTLaWz Well, I hope they remake System Shock 1 and 2. That would be great! Plus, they would have tons of support. The people who have played it would like to re-live the experience  and those who never have will support it if they like Bioshock.

Vixenar
Vixenar like.author.displayName 1 Like

@AgentMothman95 @GamerOuTLaWz I would support remakes of SS 1 and 2 in a heartbeat. Bioshock was alright but didn't come close to the atmosphere of either System Shock.
