Legal dispute with Namco Bandai, need for polish cited as reasons for CD Projekt Red pushing PC role-playing game's console debut to early next year.
Xbox 360 fans eager to get their hands on The Witcher 2 will need to conjure up some extra patience. CD Projekt Red today announced that the console port of the critically acclaimed PC role-playing game has been delayed into the first quarter of 2012.
As to the cause of the delay, CD Projekt Red gave two reasons. First, the developer said it was making some improvements to the console version of the game and the delay will allow more time for "expanding and polishing certain elements of the gameplay." Second, the postponement gives the studio more time to resolve its current legal quarrel with Namco Bandai regarding international distribution rights for the Xbox 360 version of the game. (Namco Bandai distributed the PC version, but THQ was announced as handling Witcher 2 for the Xbox 360.)
The Witcher 2 is a direct sequel to the events of the original and picks back up with professional monster slayer Geralt following a failed assassination of Temerian royalty. Geralt then sets out on a quest to track down the king's attempted killers, while also continuing to pursue those responsible for murdering other witchers. The game features a branching storyline and allows players to develop Geralt to their tastes, upgrading his magical abilities, alchemy skills, or combat proficiency as they see fit.

I excited to play this game on the 360. I also don't mind the delay. Between now and March 2012 there are so many great games coming out I dont know when Ill find the time to play em all
@PeterDuck "This game represents resistance to that trend" -totally understand/agree, though not everyone can. Well said.
Agreed about the cost PC gaming... right now it's a much better deal if you have any the tiniest motivation to learn about it and research what you should buy. To top it all off we're about to kick off the golden year of the PC vs Latest gen Console gaming cycle. This next 12 months will see a number of high profile releases that are either PC only, or will inevitably look and run way better compared to their console ports. When the next gen leap hits, PC releases will drop off again. And PC fans will be back to grumbling about crappy, buggy console ports. It's a pattern. And @dRuGGeRnaUt, you're naive if you think that the casual gaming craze would only ever impact PC development. Developers like Zynga don't start off thinking they're going to be popping out epic RPG's and suddenly realize maybe THIS is the kind of PC only release they should make. These crappy casual games are a perceived threat to all major release development shops because it makes the argument from a business perspective that making crappy addictive games for idiots is actually more profitable and lower risk than any kind of high end blockbuster effort. Who's going to drop $80 million on a chart buster when Zynga's pumping that out monthly from a game they give away for free?
There's so many people out there with subpar gaming rigs that this game will look better on a console for 95% of the public.
Was gonna rent the 360 version cause I already played 80 hours on the pc. Love this game, one of the best rpgs ever made. Kudos to the developers to make download content for free - wonder how well that paradigm will translate for the xbox live money grubbers.
@derek_brown High end PCs are overrated. Everyone thinks you need a $2,000 PC to play games. For 600 you can get a PC that will play every game out there. You spend 200-400 on a console maybe more when you add in various accesories. Then you needed to spend a couple hundred for a PC to be to use the internet and post here. So 200-500 for an internet use PC. You add them and you now have a way to play games and they look better, also you have a much better PC for internet and anything else you use it for. $400-900 that you would use for crap PC and console could easily buy a great PC. Newegg has a sale that lasts a couple hours for $250 that has everything you need for a good PC except a graphics card. They just had a GTX 460 on sale for around $100 which can max any game out there. I know it can because that is what I have. PC gaming isn't expensive and when you add in how much money you save on games it actually is a cheaper way to game. Steam regularly has sales for games that are close to $30 on consoles for maybe $3-10. I have over 200 games on my Steam account you can look for yourself. I get a lot more games and fun for a lot less on my PC than I can on my PS3. Good example. I got Super Meat Boy for $2 very soon after it released. The consoles will never see that game priced so low.
Did they just realize that ruining everything about the game to downgrade it to consoles takes a lot more time than they thought? They need to destroy the visuals that really makes this one of the best looking games out there.
@gowthamrkm, Because they are a small dev company w/ not much technical-backing for the PS3 version just yet. They've said that will but they first have to get the 360 version done, then they'd have to find additional team of devs or whatnot that have experience in PS3 porting. Sucky as it might be...means of PS3 gamers gotta wait a bit longer (but then again...so too does 360 gamers now). :(
@ash162 Although it would be a cool shooter for consoles... I have to say that it will never appear on consoles!
Let's hope they polish it well so it doesn't feel like a bad port. Recently i have learned to appreciate games being delayed due to the my ever increasing game list this fall. Also does anybody when is the first crysis releasing on consoles???
That quite sucks for the 360 gamers, Witcher is definitely an RPG that every gamer should experience.
@dRuGGeRnaUt "...just remember, alot of these "less superior" console gamers, were pc gamers once..." Quote me where I said anything about console gamers being "less superior", QUOTE ME. Your argument is therefore moot.
@dRuGGernaUt "Thank you for telling everyone with a console they should go out and buy a PC for ONE GAME they want" Pun WAS intended. The comment you are mentioning also contained me that there are plenty of console exclusives and that Witcher 2 doesn't have to be one of them.So why don't you mention that? "The exclusives for PC are not nearly enough for me to justify buying another computer" Who was talking about your preferences? "I find it funny that you are this upset about consoles getting a pc exclusive, im sure you wouldn't be nearly as upset if it was the other way around" The "other way around" almost never happens. Why don't you list the games that qualify for that "other way around"? "People REALLY need to let this "pc is superior, therefor i am superior" type of mentality" That was not the argument. The sole issue here is Witcher 2 and it's transitioning to the consoles I will skip your personal preferences because they dont pertain to the argument. "Almost every one of my favorite online PC games were DESTROYED by hacking and modding, almost to point of not playing.' List some of those games. But what does that have to do with Witcher 2 making it to the consoles? It doesn't even have multiplayer, so no hacking will affect you. Modding? if anything PC mods ENHANCE the gameplay and add variety, PLUS mods are optional.
@PeterDuck: Thank you for telling everyone with a console they should go out and buy a PC for ONE GAME they want. The exclusives for PC are not nearly enough for me to justify buying another computer. I find it funny that you are this upset about consoles getting a pc exclusive, im sure you wouldn't be nearly as upset if it was the other way around. People REALLY need to let this "pc is superior, therefor i am superior" type of mentality. I started ALL of my gaming on a IBM 286. And have been a PC gamer right up until this gen. I lost interest in RTS games, so lost most of my need for mouse and keyboard. I really have enjoyed the unified gamercard/xbox live system, and while don't like the cost(s) associated with, I have found it refreshing and invigorating. I have really gathered alot of fun experiences through xboxlive. Throughout almost 20 years of PC gaming, never found anything close to having the ease of use as well as simple friend systems/chatsystems/matchmatching systems. I miss dedicated servers, but i definately dont miss the RAMPANT hacking/moding of PC games. Almost every one of my favorite online PC games were DESTROYED by hacking and modding, almost to point of not playing. So please, by all means, enjoy your PC and its library of games(which no single console could ever match), just remember, alot of these "less superior" console gamers, were pc gamers once, and every gamer deserves respect, regardless of platform choice.
@Kaboom: Some people dont have a pc capable of running it maybe?? Same could be said for many a console games that NEVER come to pc, I find it funny you needed to say "...much superior version on pc", is it really that upsetting to you that the 50million+ xbox users will get a chance to play this awesome game. PS: and at least for now, consoles are free of the "farm-ville-mania" of the pc world. look how many pc-devs energies are being put into facebook games now, if i was a pc gamer, i would be worried more about that than consoles getting an "inferior version" of a pc game. some people.... wow...... PS: You should be very happy that such an amazing PC-dev will stand to profit so much extra money. CD Projekt Red deserves success, and this will only add to it. Hopefully not better sales on consoles than pc, otherwise we might get another console first dev. ;)
Who in their right mind would play this game on a console when it's available in a much superior version on PC? Not only that but you don't have to wait for it Some people.....Wow........
i will buy just just don't cancel xbox port again. I had to play the 1st on on pc and i hate playing games on pc (except for RTS games of course.. would love fps but no one i know has a gaming pc an I would rather play with friends).
@method115 I don't mind seeing CD-Project making witcher for the 3DS! I, too, support multiplatform games. It's a pity PC gamers can't have the experience of the games you mentioned, but console gamers need to play Witcher, Diablo and many more :) I didn't mean to disapprove their effort, on the contrary I hate the fact Microsoft doesn't want to make halo for other consoles or PC :( I know Microsoft is irrelevant to this game :P but it came out spontaneously!
@Angel_Grigorov then how can I used a rig. WITHOUT A MONITOR?!!! kid! now you just being crazy!! seek help fast!!!
"dude not everyone is rich like you and im only 15 i dont earn and you already have console what do you care.....you can play pretty much every game lucky" Im not rich, I just have a job. Look, fine, you are 15, and this is not about you OR me. Don't make it a personal issue. We are just going to talk past each other because you were raised in an increasingly console dominated gaming industry. So you don't understand what it means for old school PC gamers to have a few outstanding exclusives nowadays. Like I said, there are plenty more console games AND RPGs that you can play. ""duh, there are a lot of people with PC who want the innumerable amounts of console exclusives" what am i supposed to do about it" nothing. I was simply replying to your earlier point that "people want to play this game [Witcher 2] on a console". "I love games and im lucky that i will get to play it......................i already have witcher 2 on my pc and my pc cant handle it i told you" Its not about you or me. Its about the prestige and the last stronghold gaming industries that are located in Europe. The bottom line is that you are too young to understand just how much PC-gaming platform was dethroned over the past 5 or 6 years. This game represents resistance to that trend.
the thing i have a problem with is,when a game is release for the PC first it,s all good, but the sequel always gets dumb down,so it looks the same way on all platforms, why not leave the PC version as it is with all it,s glories, and break down the console version so it fits the stats of the console, but they don't do that they tear down every version, thats my problem i have no problem of a pc game going to consoles,it,s just the simple fact they keep messing with the pc version, look what they did to crysis 2 and DA2 and the list go,s on,they bin doing that way before crysis and DA,and on another note console players be calling out PC players of being selfish for wanting to keep there PC exclusives, and look how much console only games out there consoles have gears of war Xbox only part one was on pc they cut that out,PS and nintedo have there exclusives too,and i don't hear any console players saying certain games should share with pc,and i don't hear any pc gamers crying thats it,s unfare and console players are selfish no we don't,we just want them people to stop messing with our version of the game, stop dumbing it down thats all we ask, sorry for the rambling people i was just saying.
@RitsukoEX those are laptops. They go with a monitor. Which kinda well costs money. Laptops are always costly because of that. :) I probably should have mentioned that I never included monitors into account. After all consoles don't include the HD TV that you require to see the full glamour of the graphics. We are talking rigs here.
@Angel_Grigorov Now you check out this link!!! http://www.alienware.com/Landings/laptops.aspx?dgc=BA&cid=70462&lid=1787955
@RitsukoEX check this out. http://www.hardware-revolution.com/600-gaming-build/ Mine is even weaker than this (video card dates back to 2007) and still runs The Witcher 2 at average effects on high resolution. And RED is one demanding graphics engine
@PeterDuck "buy a high-end PC" dude not everyone is rich like you and im only 15 i dont earn and you already have console what do you care.....you can play pretty much every game lucky.... "duh, there are a lot of people with PC who want the innumerable amounts of console exclusives" what am i supposed to do about it............I love games and im lucky that i will get to play it......................i already have witcher 2 on my pc and my pc cant handle it i told you........ we are all gamer why fight about game when we can play it....i dont care what you think about the situation of witcher coming to xbox but i dont wanna fight i have great respect for any gamer because they are gamers.....
First game was awsome loved the darker grittier feel as opposed to other rpg's of the time definitely one of the best adult rpg's out there. Unfortunately since the days of the original I have had to give up on PC gaming due to rising cost's so this better freaken make it to xbox, and they better not sensor those damn sex cards lol.
@derek_brown "look there are a lot people with xbox who want this game" duh, there are a lot of people with PC who want the innumerable amounts of console exclusives "CD Projekt Red will be making money what do you have against that' Apparently they didn't care enough about $ when they made the first game because it never made it to consoles. And apparently they didn't are enough about $ when they made the first game because they made it for PC only. Even their DLC is free. They obviously care more about the quality of the game. "and we get to play an awesome game" buy a high-end PC. "if you think it will ruin the game than dont buy it or if you are a PS3 owner dont get upset" I own all consoles except WII. But I want THIS game to be the last great PC exclusive for the time being at least "you have uncharted, infamous and god of war and more" yup, I beat those games years ago. My allegiance stays with PC nonetheless "though you will be missing a epic game" I beat Witcher 2 on my PC already
well it sucks when legal bs comes in the way of a game and affect the gamers i hope x box will get it eventually and then they can start working on one to ps3 too and never make deals with namco bandai again... or ill just have to end up buying the pc version someday
@PeterDuck dude.....look there are a lot people with xbox who want this game...........CD Projekt Red will be making money what do you have against that.......and we get to play an awesome game......if you think it will ruin the game than dont buy it or if you are a PS3 owner.....dont get upset......you have uncharted, infamous and god of war and more......though you will be missing a epic game...........
RitsukoEX: Yeah, i know that.. but it wasn't mentioned in this news and i think that the DLC is going to be released by the end of this year
I was going to buy it for Christmas :/ Hope Namco Bandai will go to hell with their stupid accusations and the game will be published soon after. @WeWerePirates That was a different situation - they wanted another company to make it for them and those lads failed at it. W2 was already far in development, and CDP Red is not a big company, so they had to focus on only one project. Notice that they also had to make PC version first and weren't able to take care of X360 one because of that.
After what happened with "Rise of the White Wolf" (yes there was a port of the first Witcher in development for the 360) I'm not expecting this to actually be released.
So is this going to be a trend is it? Consoles only get sequals and not the 1st installment? Another BS Crysis2 situation here. Meh could be worse...(see below) .......................................................................................................... @czdesigns: um don't feel bad for us guy, atleast we don't have to wait over a decade for a flippin sequal to release. Diablo 3, Starcraft 2, Duke Nukem Forever...to name a few...................................................................................@100proofsoco: I agree man. I like to call them "PC Purists". Only what they don't understand is that most console "kiddies" as they put it have gamed on PC's longer than they've been alive. I've been PC gaming since the 5.25" floppy and now prefer the console. So who's the real "kiddie" here Olgark?
@Angel_Grigorov what kind of BULLCRAP you trying to sell me here?!!! show me links and I'll show you mine!!!
Olgark is right. Just check the reviews posted for the game. There is so many really low score because some consolite players are unable to use their entire arsenal. Hello, this is a RPG, not a 3rd person hack and slash.
