Sony looks at PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 ahead of expected PlayStation 4 reveal.
Sony has continued its Evolution series of videos on the PlayStation Meeting 2013 site, ahead of the New York event on February 20 where the company is widely expected to formally unveil the PlayStation 4.
Following on from Friday's video, which chronicled the life of the original PlayStation--and also potentially teased a PlayStation 4 announcement on Wednesday, the two new videos go on to detail the success of the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3.
"Working with Toshiba, PlayStation 2 was powered by all-new technology, including the breakthrough Emotion Engine CPU," says the first video. "If driving the transition into a digital future wasn't enough," adds the second video, "PlayStation 3 also brought with it a new way to play: with the Move controller. This unique controller would help offer a new level of motion-controlled gaming never before seen on a PlayStation console."
The latest PlayStation 4 rumours include alleged specifications for the PlayStation 4 made available online. Various other rumours have said the device with have multi-user logins and will be focused more on new ways to play rather than technical power.
Sony's PlayStation Meeting will take place in New York on February 20 at 18:00 EST/15:00 PST/23:00 GMT. GameSpot will be in attendance and broadcasting the event live.

Why does Sony bores us with the past? Show us the future, I hope to see new and exciting games not some CEO bragging about the "glorious" past of his company.
@SoreThumbsBill its to build up the anticipation and excitement for PS4 you imbecile
Even Xboxerz can't front....PS2 was the shit. Everybody and their grandmother had one at one point or another during it's life cycle.
@HipHopBeats Binned mine after the second DRE incident... that hardware fault they only admitted was there when they were threatened with legal action. Sure the 360 had a similar problem but at least Microsoft admitted it and paid up for the repairs.
@HipHopBeats i traded mine in after playing 5 minutes of halo !! Though i will say it had the best gran turismo in the series on it. And i enjoyed red faction 2 !!
Too much rely on its recent legacy seems kinda desperate...
I mean, do we have to 'remember' ourselves how "great" playstation is (supposed to be) ?
This could be Sony's final swan song.
@0m39AX How on earth can you find it desperate, it is true that PS one and PS2 were mega popular and successful consoles and played a huge part in videogame industry, and they are rightfully be proud of that heritage. Also it makes a very good hype building marketing, this is absolutely nothing to do with reliance whatsoever.
well lets see what sony has done which as you can see in the video they are not admitting but anyways here's the deal. as far as the ps3 well they are showing only the games that did any good but its funny how they are not showing the terrible game at launch that they used to lure customers into buying this soo called better system. remember heavenly sword? or what about that dragon game? also remember the tech demo for FF7 and the video of FIGHT NIGHT? yeah and then there was the epic failed attempt at Killzones video and then come to find out that they were using a video tech demo and not he actual game play. but what about the MOVE? lol that thin is a joke. have they seen how many people use them now? NOBODY!! its a terrible attempt at trying to improve an already nostalgic technology that Nintendo already did. I used to be all about sony but then the xbox came out and i was sold. now i have all systems but only 3 games catch my attention on the ps3 and i honestly cant stand that machine. meh its ok Sony you can keep your fanboys but stop with all the lies.
@1nUrF4c3 whats too long? my rant? well its a rant i didnt know there was a limit as to how much you should be able to say? anyways not my fault you have ADHD so thats a whole diffrent conversation. but you say $60 is a ripoff? why? where does it say that there should only be a limit as to how much a person should pay? you pay for quality now is XBL getting too much ads? yeah i agree but the service and lag free play time is outstanding. do i need all those other stupid apps? NO i only use the xbox for gaming and netflix but other than that its a smooth system
i wonder if i know sony they are all about gimmicks and if i were them i think they are going to just do a new version of the PS3 so that it can be upgraded. the dashboard needs an overhaul and the network and mainly the software.
Here is my personal speculation for PS4 judging from the pattern below:
PS1 (CD, 700 MB) => PS2 (DVD, 4.7-8.5 GB: let's put it that it is 5 folds the capacity of the previous gen) => PS3 (Bluray, 25GB: about 5 fold the capacity of PS2) => PS4 (4K tech: around 120GB is also about 5 fold the capacity of PS3).
Moreover, 4K tech(ultra high definition, 4 times of full HD 1080p) is still have no physical container for it except hard drive which is coherent with the former rumor about Next gen that will go digital only.
Last I check, the president of Sony, Kuzuo Harai(Steve Jobs in Sony firm) said there would be no next gen until we can show the significant improvement. Here it is: 4K is the answer to that.
In that case, we can have game looks as good as the quality of Holywood movies. How cool is that? If this actually happen, Nintendo and Microsoft will be put in deep doo-doo situations once again. Lol. On the other hand, game production cost will raise even more, and that will be the challenge on Sony upper-hand part. In conclusion, I believe the next Playstation will be all about innovative gaming and muscle power.
@jark888 you will never see 4K in AAA games from a console that cost only $400-450. At least not this (or even next) year. Maybe smartphone alike or "indie" games.
@strongmokus @jark888 If Sony announce PS4 this Feb. 20, I think the fastest they can launch is by the end of next year. Native 4K might not be used much at first, but they can still do up-scaling to begin with.
I'm sure people in stone age wouldn't imagine that humanity could reach moon. Remember Sony's slogan "Make Believe." They have surprised us quite a few times, haven't they? We'll see.
@jark888 Woah hold on there, consoles first have to deliver decent 1080p then we'll talk about 4k visuals, even high end(consumer) PCs can't do such wonders.
@paul081278 @jark888 @kickfly222
Using bluRay was also considered madness and over reaching. But it helped set it as the standard, crushing HD DVD and generating a huge profit (i hope).
Same for the PS2 and DVD.
So Sony might push 4K via their PS console just to motivate sales towards the new 4K hardware (tvs and players and probably new media too).
Good idea? no, not really. Good Investment: possibly
@paul081278 @jark888 @kickfly222 You forgot to take Sony standpoint into consideration that they will see the next Xbox's spec before launching their PS4. If Sony announce 4K tech to use in game, it will give Microsoft a hard time to come up with something to compete with that which will definitely take sometimes. And that's why it could last until next year. Besides, Sony've launched their Playstation consoles about 1-2 years after their announcements according to the history.
@jark888@kickfly222I actually joined gamespot just to reply to this! As much as it'd be great if you were right, I think you're really wrong about the state of things. Firstly, the PS4 will be out before Christmas; if they announced it now and it didn't come out until next year, they'd kill the holiday market this year - they're not going to risk that. Secondly, the market for 4K is so tiny right now that it makes no economic sense to bring out hardware that targets it in the next generation (even if they could make it cost effective, which they can't). The higher quality visuals that the next gen should bring also mean that 1080p at 60fps will be a challenge, if the visual quality is good (check out Unigine's "Valley Benchmark" to see what next gen graphics will look like). So sorry, but this is just a nice dream - the PS4 will not be 4K and will be coming out this year.
I really like SONY's consoles for having the biggest game libraries, free online gaming and their durability compared to Microsoft consoles, but I have to admit that the XBOX had much better graphics than the PS2 as the XBOX360 has superior visual quality over the PS3, so I don't understand all the talk about SONY having breakthrough technology on their consoles. Will their next console have better graphics than the next XBOX? because they haven't achieved that yet.
@jagcivtec I think the X360 has better graphics in average, mostly multi-platform (meaning the majority of games), but when comparing exclusives vs exclusives, I think the PS3 does show better graphics. But the PS2 was inferior to the X-Box graphic wise. Anyways, this is only marketing. I'm a developer for a small company making Android games and our trailer and avertisements praise the graphics and AI of our games, but seriously, both really suck even compared to the Android market. That's marketing for you.
Bring it on Sony, Myself much like the rest of the gaming world is ready to see what you have in store for us.
It has been predicted that this current gen started by the Wii U will be the last generation for home consoles because the "experts" say that consoles will face stiff competition from tablets and smartphones. Let's hope that dosen't come true because I still want to buy consoles.
@GSJones1994 Agreed, at the very least let's hope that Tablet and smartphone games get rid of this pay to win scheme. I can think of perhaps 6 real good Iphone games that could even close to rival a Mobile game let alone the best of the console games. those free and 99 cent games just aren't worth it. Now if more games were like Chaos Rings and such it might be a decent platform.
@GSJones1994 Maybe i'm behind in time, but i still don't even own a smart device. I'm still using the old mobile i have.
@GSJones1994 I couldn't agree more I absolutly hate smart devices
Sony's approach to hardware has always been unmistakeably unique, even if the PS3 is widely regarded as their most disappointing console to date. I personally have and appreciate the system. Hoping the PS4 can continue the type of dominance we came to expect with the PS2 but suppose only time will tell how this generation will shake out.
I don't know if everybody seen these videos before, but if you haven't, then this is all from the Final Fantasy Agni's Philosophy real-time Tech demo, enjoy:
"This is just the beginning" -Resistance 2
@PodXCOM These are the best of the best graphics I've ever seen. Water impact is unprecedented(for me at least). Square Enix is always the leader in graphical technology. Other companies, I could think of, that would go this far are Crytek, Bioware, Naughty Dog, Quantic Dream, Team Bomdi, Rockstar North, and 343 industries.
@PodXCOM I forgot to mention that this tech is the closest to the next gen graphic.
Now there's a video for both the PSP and Vita. Dunno what tomorrow's video would be, if there is one
