Sony, THQ offering downloadable copy of madcap action adventure's predecessor gratis to those who redeem online pass.
Sony has been actively pursuing exclusive content for the PlayStation 3 editions of multiplatform games, and one such deal was to involve THQ's Saints Row: The Third. With THQ's madcap open-world action adventure hitting store shelves this week, Sony has finally parted the curtain on the particulars of that arrangement.
Today, Sony and THQ announced that those who purchase the PS3 edition of Saints Row: The Third and redeem the game's online pass within the next 90 days will receive a free digital copy of Saints Row 2 from the PlayStation Network. Saints Row 2 can be downloaded starting early next week. The promotion ends on February 13 and is only available to those in the US, Canada, and Mexico.
Released in 2008, Saints Row 2 was set a few years after the events of the first game, which saw the Saints gang take over the city of Stillwater. Besides open gang warfare, the game offered a series of mission types, including such felonious acts as insurance fraud. It also included a two-player co-op mode.

Infinity_Gauntl "Sony is trying to be a system that is full of exclusives" TRYING? Dude sony is the NUMBER 1 with the more 1st party studios in the video game industry to date. They have tons of exclusives out already and keep making new ones each year Unlike M$ wich lack ALOT of 1st studios and only have like 2-3 exclusives IP this gen wich is pathetic
@Infinity_Gauntl Well if THQ said that i cant argue, and if they are right about the 2/3 times thing they are in fora lot of money since sr2 sold about 3.7m. Now about the sony thing, i belive their real aim is to bring more people to psn, by getting people who never used it or who never downloaded a game. Its like they say - give a sample and they will buy loads. I say this because i really cant see people buying ps3 because of this deal but i do see people - who already own a ps3 - getting online for the first time because of it. Its a common assumption that everyone plays online or has their videogame connected to the internet but thats not true, only 50% of the video game owners have connected theirs - at least once.
They actually included Canada? For once we're part of North America in gaming world? But seriously, this is not that impressive. If SR3 builds on top of SR2, why would I need the old game? I can find out all the story/background/character info in Youtube and Wikipedia.
@kkxtrouble In a previous article THQ stated that Saints row 3 is to sell 2-3x the amount of SR2. I think this is because Sony is trying to be a system that is full of exclusives and has little to do with THQ.
@Psycho_Hands Well not exactly, it could mean that its not doing well and that since sr2 is not selling anyway they would rather give it free for whatever amount of money sony is giving them. I have no idea which case it is.
Sounds like SR the Third is doing well if THQ is handing SR2 out for free. Good to know. :)
"US canada and mexico." I know everyone in here is mad that europe + world isn't getting this. I am absolutely AMAZED canada is getting this. We never get these promotions. Just like the "Free guitar hero van halen" and others, its rarely stated on packaging that it is not available in (said country). - Other side of this? They are giving away free stuff, and people are still complaining. I get the people that aren't in the areas they are giving this away in, but for everyone else, stfu you are getting free goods, be happy

I would be pissed about this not being for 360 but I have already beaten SR2 three times on each console PS3, 360, and PC. I can't justify paying the $60 right now for SRThird since I am stomach high in mammoth guts in Skyrim.
Hmm mabye users outside the US and Canada can try logging in with another account (under US residency) and see if the online code would grant access to the freebie, can someone confirm if this works?
Wow here I was getting all excited about a free game after the disappointing news of the tonne of incoming DLC (aka content removed from the original game) THQ announced for this game before its even released, then I read "only available to those in the US, Canada, and Mexico"! I was considering buying SR3 when I read this title, now I read the details I'm back to not purchasing it again. I think I'd rather be playing Skyrim & AC Revelations anyway but still when its a digital copy then why not make it worldwide?
Kind of a letdown. If Sony footed the bill for, say, the season pass DLCs or some part of that, I'm sure it'd be much more popular. Probably cost em the same too, distribution and all. But who owns Saints Row 3 and doesn't own Saints Row 2? This has to be a tiny fraction of the players.

The promotion... is only available to those in the US, Canada, and Mexico. Why release SR3 in other continents then? Why not keep it exclusive to US, Canada, and Mexico.

When Sony announced PS3 exclusive DLC for SR3rd, they obviously didnt have this in mind. SR2 is not exclusive DLC by any definition of the term, and this only applies to america, so us in the EU get nothing. Good job Sony.
This is rediculous! PS3 owners should get Saints Row 1 so they can own the entire collection.
Goddammit!!! Assassin's Creed Revelations coming with Assassin's Creed and discount vouchers for II and Brotherhood was a hollow victory seeing as I already own them all. Seeing the title of this news article made me happy..... until I read that it's limited to the North American continent. Pull your finger out Sony.
It's about time they made up for the mistake/lie. Now they just need to do the same thing for Battlefield 3 purchasers. They should also get a download code for Battlefield 1943, since that was also promised at E3.
Big deal i got SR2 already and set to get SR3 this friday. they doing it like ACR with the first game i own . I thing they going to do this to sell there games plz try harder .
For those that will get benefit from it, great... but the reality is there won't be that many. Most of the people that will go out and buy SR3 in this first 90 days will already own SR2 for sure, and even if they don't, you can buy a used copy of that game for very little money. Again, great for those that will use it, but it will be a lost benefit on most.
this is pretty awesome for ps3's in those locations for every one else it sucks big time because you know you getting less than someone somewhere yet you both paying the same price
Yea Spacerac.... the 360 gets early and half priced dlc if you buy the Season Pass. It's only available on the 360. I was in Gamestop yesterday and a kid was trying to buy it for the PS3 and they said 360 only. So you're saving about $5 on each of the 4 dlc packs ($20 savings), plus getting it early. Saints Row 2 is worth about $20 retail. So they're pretty equal deals. Personally, I loved the 1st SR but absolutely hated the 2nd. It was just too stupid imo. Prolly pass on the 3rd or maybe rent it first.
