Earlier this month, Sony revealed players wanting to transfer existing PSP titles to the publisher's soon-to-be-released PlayStation Vita console will have to repurchase the titles for a discounted fee.

Players hoping to have better luck accessing and playing PSOne classics on the console have fared no better, with the publisher revealing that the Vita will not support archive titles at its Japanese launch next month.

In an FAQ on Sony Japan's Vita site, and as translated by GameSpot Australia, the publisher states:

"Q: Can games in the PlayStation archives be played on the PS Vita?
A: Not at time of release. We will keep you posted on further developments as they come to hand."

However, on Sony's US Vita site, a similar FAQ states that users will be able to play PSOne classics at some point.

"Q: Is PS Vita compatible with other PlayStation platform games like PS3, PS2, or PSP? Do you have any plan to support other PlayStation platforms in the future?
A: Users can play PSP titles, minis, and PSOne classics titles, which are offered on PS Store. We do not have any plans to make PS Vita compatible with PS3 or PS2 titles at this point."

The PlayStation Vita launches in Japan on December 17. Gamers in North America, Europe, Latin America, Australasia, the Middle East, and Africa will be able to pick up the system starting February 22.
