Platinum: PS3 Bayonetta 'our biggest failure'

Studio director Atsushi Inaba says version of 2010 action game for Sony platform was a major shortcoming, but not a "pointless failure."

The PlayStation 3 version of Platinum Games' 2010 third-person action game Bayonetta won warm reviews, but was the studio's "biggest failure," according to director Atsushi Inaba. Speaking to Edge, the developer explained that Platinum decided against developing the game itself, and instead handed porting duties to an internal team at publisher Sega, which was ultimately a detriment to the game.

“The biggest failure for Platinum so far, the one that really sticks in my mind, is that port,” Inaba said. “At the time we didn’t really know how to develop on PS3 all that well, and whether we could have done it… is irrelevant: we made the decision that we couldn’t. But looking back on the result, and especially what ended up being released to users, I regard that as our biggest failure.”

Despite Inaba deeming the Bayonetta PS3 port a shortcoming for the studio, the situation was not without benefit. Inaba said it was not a "failure for nothing," adding that the Platinum decided to develop both the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Vanquish in-house over a desire to "take responsibility for everything."

“We learned, so it wasn’t a pointless failure, but it was a failure nonetheless,” he said.

Their biggest failure was that fuck poor excuse Sam DLC for MGRR that they Crapcom'd out. Extremely limited moveset, lazily boosted AI, no new locations or even music, shoehorned-in VR tests of sanity, very little story for its own sake, and horribly overpriced.

*** Their biggest failure was not bothering to port it to PC, then the PS3 port would have been no problem for me.

I could have traded in once I got it on steam (or better just thrown out),. I can't take how slow and just generally bad the PS3 version is (not that i'm really surprised)... and not all of us want to waste more money on an XBOX as well just to be able to play it properly.

I don't know what the hell Inaba is talking about. The PS3 version of Bayonetta was no failure in any way.

@shiss27 They released a patch about a month later to fix the ridiculous loading times that the Xbox 360 version didn't have.

I bought the XBox 360 version, but thanks to a busted ethernet port, I can't download any of the add-ons anymore unless I get a new 360 or get my 360 elite repaired for about a hundred bucks.

What annoyed me the most about the game, apart from technical issues, was Bayonetta's ridiculous proportions. She has a tiny head and a tiny body compared to the rest of her. I know it's a small issue, but it I just could not take this character seriously (not that you're supposed to).

Lagash1973

@shadow580 The characters have been conceived in a manga/anime/barbie style on purpose, that's why they have longest and misproportioned legs. ;-)

@shadow580 She's a witch...she's probably not suppose to look normal, as you said. Even with her insane anatomy, she still looked normal...normal for a witch figure that is. Her small head was helped by her beehive hairdo.

@shadow580 I found her quite strange at first, but now i find her very sexy, even with those long legs of her(i don't like woman with long legs) but she is very beautiful

@Zephyriuum  @shadow580 That's...... disturbing...... I test played for a half an hour and decided to cancelled the purchase...... i dunno why I can't stand her at all, maybe some people find this attractive......

@WillyChong  @Zephyriuum  @shadow580 You know people can find video game characters attractive, right? I think Bayonetta is very beautiful, an obviously she can be appealing to men. And women, I suppose, too.

I like her attitude and her unique design. It makes for one hell of a bit...I mean witch.

Seems right to me, I mean you can't expect this powerful woman to have a small body, how else would she be able to lift up a huge dragon by herself?

The PS3 port was indeed a mess. But at least Platinum learned from that incident.

Look it does not matter if they released a "patch" to fix some issues, they should have re-programmed the game as an apology edition for PlayStation 3 owners who decided against buying this crappy port... and hence caused us the gamers to lose faith in a developer calling themselves "Platinum Games" that implies their games must be great right?

There is no excuse... however B2 is being financed by Nintendo as an exclusive... imho they better also offer Nintendo fans a reprogrammed Bayonetta 1 so they can play that as well to get the whole experience... if they do then I would buy it.

abHS4L88

 @GodGundamNT1

Reprogramming the game and doing everything you said requires money and resources, something Platinum clearly doesn't have along with Sega. Their games are great and Bayonetta was on the PS3 was still considered a great game, just not amazing like the 360 version.

I do hope they release the original with Bayonetta 2 though since I no longer have my 360 copy.

I wouldn't consider a total failure. Just a game that is not for everybody or perhaps a very clumsy way to deliver fan service.

 @franzito *facepalm*

They meant the PS3 version was a "failure" not the game. Did you not play it all? It has a fantastic soundtrack, impressive visuals, and fluid combat controls. I didn't play it to see Bayonetta pole dance. I just found it hilarious and chuckled all through the game when Bayonetta quipped something about being a pole dancer and stuff.

BAYONETTA doesn't take itself seriously, and that's why it's one of the best action games out there.

The biggest failure will be Wii U exclusivity for the sequel.  "Let's take our potential player base and shrink it down to 5% of what it could be."  Sometimes I have no clue what developers are thinking.

Bayonetta2013
Bayonetta2013

@kathulos Exactly. Especially when a lot of the Nintendo fanbase is used to the happy-go-lucky Mario games and Legend of Zelda series. I'm not looking forward to seeing BAYONETTA 2's first week sales. It definitely won't top the original's.

Bayonetta2013

@SChol3sy  @kathulos What's the point if the majority of Nintendo's fanbase will most likely never play it and the original BAYONETTA fans who have remained faithful never get to the play the game? I don't see the point even if Nintendo "saved" it if I never get to play it. I'd rather not have a sequel at all if I can't play it for myself.

@SChol3sy  You say Ninten kids saved it I say they just gave away money to get a game on their system that is 98% kids and its gonna flop hard cause the real parents aren't going to let their kids play a half naked lady game so yea plat was stupid to let Ninten kids buy it cause reality check they didn't save it cause the hardcore fans aren't going to buy a crappy pee on u system I know I'm not cause I want a real controller not some big touch screen pos controller hope Bayonetta 2 flops hard so I can lmao at Nintendo.

nintendoboy16

@constantterror  Because god forbid Nintendo tries AGAIN with the M rated audience. Which they did in the past when they had these developers:

Rare- Perfect Dark on N64, former Rare developer, Chris Seavor even admits Nintendo's involvement with Conker's Bad Fur Day as well.

Silicon Knights- Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem on GameCube

n-Space- Geist on GameCube

Goes to show that such a "kiddie" company like Nintendo can "grow up" sometime.

I really liked Bayonetta for the PS3. After the patch was released the game ran pretty well. I was hoping for a sequel but I guess it's going to the Wii U. Hopefully, it will be a timed exclusive. If not then oh well because I don't have any plans on buying the Wii U.

How dare (or how arrogant) a game dev call themselves "Platinum Games" and then make an irresponsible decision to not ensure multiplatform console parity on any of their games, primarily Bayonetta 1?

Platinum Games finally admits they screwed up but they should instead have focused that energy into making Bayonetta 1 PS3 Apology Edition to regain our trust as consumers, until then even if I buy the Wii U I am not buying Bayonetta 2...

 @GodGundamNT1

They released a patch fixing up the framerate and loading issues of the 1st, what more do you need?

shadow580
shadow580

@abHS4L88  loading times where decreased, some blur filter apparently removed, tearing decreased but frame rate stayed the same. The frame rate is still a large problem for this game since it affects perceived smoothness of the game and most importantly input lag. Imagine playing Tekken or a similar title at 40fps instead of the typical 60fps. Very much playable but annoying to say the least. For Bayonetta it's more like 30fps on PS3 vs 50fps on the xbox 360 (when there is a fight going on), even sometimes going to the low twenties on the PS3.So it's better frame rate, that's what he needs.

m_nadal

@jark888  @CaptainKrunch10 I bought a 360 specifically so I could play Bayonetta, based on reviews and youtube videos -- then waited until Christmas to unbox console + game = best holiday I ever had. I played similar games before and after it, Devil May Cry 2 (PS2), Oni (PC) and Bloodrayne 1 + 2 (PC), and Bayonetta comes good where DMC2 and BR2 come up short: The camera. Press RB/R1 to instantly switch target (kissy mark :-) and camera focus, you always knew which enemy her next attack would be directed against.

Oni gets honorable mention, because if you can't get the roaming camera right, make the camera completely manual. Ever since Mario 64 we have had to deal with roaming camera and it is astonishing how many games get that wrong.

I'm so disappointed by the 3DS battery life (compared to the GBA) I am considering selling mine and putting it towards a WiiU after price drop (if B2 is still an exclusive by that point).

@RohoboK @BravoOneActual @maderrin You misunderstand. I play for story and gameplay, the sheer level of ridiculousness of everything in Bayonetta is a turn-off and I hate how oversexualised everything is becoming, Bayonetta is just another fine example of people taking if for granted while pushing it to extremes and I'm not ok with that. You have your opinion and we have ours as to what is acceptable and fun and what is not. I just don't want to support a game that furthers questionable attitudes while having music, levels and characters that are just plain shallow and uninteresting to me, I agree that it has a good combat system but the overall package is weak for me.

RohoboK
RohoboK

@chronocommander  @BravoOneActual  @maderrin Well said. Could care less about how 'sexualised' Bayonetta is. Play the game, love its remarkably smooth and addictive gameplay and get over that laughable insecurity you must have if you feel like you shouldn't be playing a game that shows a woman's curves. The horror!
