By comparison, competitor Valve's Steam service has 4.9 million concurrent players right now and a peak concurrent userbase of 5.7 million.
Of SimCity's 1.1 million total sales thus far, 44 percent (about 484,00) came through Origin, EA announced today.

there is almost 40 millions users... they are talking about concurent(at the same time) users.

i dont think theres 40 million people with a computer powerfull enough to play this sim city game.
4 Like It's not "competitor Valve", it's not a competition, people choose Steam because it's good, Origin is just pushed down our throats. If there was an option I bet there wouldn't be 3% of those users.
@Reuwsaat Steam is shoved down our throats as well. Go to Gamestop and read the boxes for a few PC games. Many of them will require a Steam account to even play the game, again asserting that you don't actually "own" the game you just bought. Having said that, Steam is a surprisingly decent service that I actually don't mind. I buy stuff from Steam all the time. Origin, however...
@RoadStar1602 I never noticed that as all the games I buy are from Steam anyways, last physical copy I bought was I think Okami for PS2, since those days I always used Steam: excellent offers and never had a problem with their service. I'm not anti-EA hater or anything, but Origin is rather shameful, wouldn't mind to run it on the background, but at least I hoped that it worked at least to the point that I could game without worries.
1 Like Comparing Origin to Steam is just ridiculous. Origin have just 15 titles where as Steam have more than 2000 titles. GS is really proving itself a BS.
9 Like The number of users (concurrent or otherwise) on Origin is irrelevant now that EA has games that require an always-online connection in order to play them at all. That skews the numbers all out of whack and cannot be compared to voluntary use statistics, particularly to Steam which commonly allows off-line play, even for games that require the Steam client to be installed. That fact also makes this blurb from EA, parroted by the useless Eddie Makuch, irrelevant as well. It kind of makes one wonder how much Gamespot is getting from EA for the publicity...
3 Like I stopped playing BF3 because it is on that buggy P.O.S. software. I feel bad for those who still use it....oh wait, no I don't. Stop using it people, so EA can just die the miserable death they deserve while we all point and laugh.

Yes, I'm missing some good games. But thankfully the market is full of great games not touched and ruined by EA.

Yes, it's EA, and yes, it's something separate from Steam, but other than that I don't see how the Origin software is bad/gets in the way of gaming.
Objectively, it's identical to Steam, no better or worse. Just a different piece of software you need to play certain games.
Plus it's not like you really "have your games in two different places" when you can just add shortcuts to your Steam library for your Origin games.

The summary is "If you let someone compromise your computer, they can use Origin to compromise your computer."
Hackers can't magically replace the URIs on your computer with something else. You need to have clicked something, downloaded something, run something that allows them to do it.
And if you've done that, you're already done and infected. What does it matter if they can then make Origin do interesting things? They already have your computer.
Origin really has nothing to do with it. If you are connected to the internet your computer is vulnerable. It's not EA's fault you have no idea how to use the internet safely.
9 Like @Spartan_418 @MadCityTech Just google "Origin Spyware", atleast Steam doesn't require you to have you whole system monitored and sent AND sold to 3rd party clients. Origin doesn't give you an "OPT Out" feature when it comes to privacy. Origin has also been used by hackers to connect to your pc. And furthermore... do you RELLY trust EA with your info or security?

yeah because all those people are FORCED to use that POS Origin just to play the game. So EA should not even look at this as a victory, because I'm sure more then half are not happy using Origin, I know I am not ( Mass Effect 3 and BF 3)
16 Like Origin ended my relationship with EA. I have not purchased an EA game since Battlefield 2 and will never purchase another one as long as Origin, or an online connection for a single player game, is required.
18 Like They should do another study to see how many people use Origin to buy games, as opposed to those who're simply OK with being told to pull down their pants and bend over just to play a game they bought somewhere else.
5 Like It's crap that you have to have Origin to play EA games you bought boxed but Valve does exactly the same thing. In fact loads of PC games require Steam to play whether you bought them boxed or not.
Although Steam in my opinion is the better of the two services, you still shouldn't be forced into using it. It's completely against consumer choice.

1 Like Kinda sad that 1.3 million completely broke the system. Meanwhile, XBL gets hammered by more than that during CoD launches and has never had issues anywhere near as bad.

@BattyOnBench Creating their own service ensures the flow of money stays directly in EA's pocket rather than giving Valve a cut.

14 Like @Seth_Defiler You can chose not to play EA games and not be a prisoner. I don't play Battlefield, I didn't and won't play ME3 and I only played DS 1 and 2.

4 Like Maybe my avatar shows some bias, but I don't know how people can put Origin on their computer. Just the sight of it's icon would give me the creeps. I look at it like a cancer waiting to devour my computer.
