Tweets from Markus "Notch" Persson slam Microsoft and its upcoming operating system as a closed platform.
Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson has spit venom at Microsoft and its new Windows 8 operating system. The developer explained over Twitter that he received an email from Microsoft asking for help to certify Minecraft for Windows 8, to which he responded with sharp, cutting words about the new platform.
"I told them to stop trying to ruin the PC as an open platform," he said.
Windows 8 launches next month and has generated much buzz over its vast redesign, but it appears Notch won't be among the adopters.
"I'd rather have Minecraft not run on [Windows 8] at all than to play along," he added. "Maybe we can convince a few people not to switch to [Windows 8] that way."
Notch is no stranger to bemoaning the actions of large companies, as he declared Electronic Arts to be "destroying" the gaming industry earlier this year. However, his comments about Windows 8 are in stark contrast to the affection he poured on Microsoft upon Minecraft's record-setting launch on Xbox Live Arcade.
"Hey, Microsoft! You might be a big and scary American company that likes secrets and meetings and such, but I love working with you!" he said at the time.

What "Notch" needs to realize is that most of his customers are between the age of 8-14 years meaning that most of them don't buy the computers for their family, so of course parents are going to want the latest version of windows. In other words instead of "Notch" convincing people to not buy windows 8 he is really loosing his customers by preventing them from playing. my family recently bought a computer with windows 8 and I had no idea that this would prevent me from playing minecraft and my parents have bought me a computer with windows 8 for the purpose of playing minecraft and for my school work but because of his refusal I must now either return the computer and get a new one around Christmas (which would be a hassle) or just say forget minecraft "Notch" will get over it when he has no customers, which is what I am most likely to do. Plus after getting windows 8 I love it. I have found it to be very user friendly and I urge "Notch" to reconsider his decision to prevent it on minecraft or if he stays stubborn to at least make it a big story because almost everyone I know has no idea that this is happening.
Actually, Notch want's to make a statement, and he has. he never intended Minecraft to be the success it is anyway. You might love Windows 8, but it seems that for every person who's "luvvin it" there's at least another person who hates it. I hate it.

He's so full of Bull S. His game is on Xboxlive but he won't make his game windows 8 compatible. First off he doesn't even have the knowledge to reprogram it. It's just laziness! He hasn't worked on minecraft since he moved to Vegas. I bought minecraft and it ran on Vista and win 7 but soon after you could no longer download the game in it's entirety but only to start it up in a browser. Lets see Microsoft who he's already in bed with against Mojang. Give it a few weeks and a fan will do it faster and better then he could. The Fame Clock is ticking Notch. tic toc tic toc.
Another reason to avoid upgrading to Windows 8. I've skipped previous Windows before, and it looks like Windows 7 stays in my home.
1 Like @SolidTy It only affects RT (i.e. ARM based tablet) devices. You can run it fine on a PC running Windows 8... or on intel based tablets and ultrabooks and whatevers. The RT also doesn't support Java so that rules out the browser version. I directly tweeted notch if he would reconsider cause I would love to play Minecraft on my Surface and he replied "Not Happening". The Surface Pro will run it fine when they come out. He is only really cutting out the ARM Tablet market.

Well as far as im concerned, It really isn't up to Notch anymore seeing as he has stepped down from last I heard, Mojang SHOULD certify it for Windows 8 OR refund all the money to the people who paid for Minecraft, Is that not fair, By not certifying to Windows 8, In a sense your robbing those who did upgrade of their money, People didn't upgrade to Windows 8 for Minecraft.. 2 Like @N3rdk0r3 that's a pretty dumb comment. No one forced you to move to an OS that doesn't support the game you paid for. That is like complaining to people that made regular Xbox games that their crap doesn't work on the X360. The people that changed consoles, and the console manufacturer removing backward compatibility are to blame - not the developers.

I have no complaints about Windows 8. It sure doesn't affect me; my Linux and Solaris/illumos boxen will do just fine without that garbage. It might get a VM at best, and only so I can benchmark it and demonstrate to others where Linux triumphs and Windows fails.
Windows users, now is your chance to escape Upgrade Hell(TM). Try Ubuntu. It's free. You'll have Steam shortly. Minecraft runs faster on it. If you really need to run Windows apps, there's always Wine. It doesn't slow down after a few months like Windows does.

2 Like While it is true that Windows 8 is compatible with a lot of stuff (like Minecraft), it's a sign of the times, and a clear indication of the direction Microsoft really wants to take Windows. And it goes MUCH deeper than "LOL wut, touchscreen controls on my PC?"
It makes a lot more sense when you realize that the "Desktop environment" in Windows 8 is backwards compatibility which will be phased out of Windows completely in 2 or 3 generations. Just like MS-DOS and 16-bit applications faded to the background as obsolete subsystems as newer and better systems with modern APIs took their place. Windows 8 is clearly designed around the features of the Metro apps, and the Metro API will continue to grow and expand, and the "legacy" desktop software we all run today will slowly fade to the background. At least, that's what Microsoft is hoping.
The clear giveaway is the clear segregation between the legacy desktop and the Metro start screen, and the fact that software developers are not allowed to sell any software which uses Metro features unless it's approved by Microsoft and sold from the app store.
When Microsoft gets enough Metro apps approved for the app store, they can release versions of windows that do away with the desktop (just like the RT Tablets are doing now) and the vast majority of home computer users won't care because the app store will do everything they wanted, which isn't very much to begin with (Facebook, Youtube, Wikipedia, MS Word, and Solitaire, and 35% of PC users are set!)
Granted, there will always be ways for "power users" to work around it to install and use the software they want, but when you talk about a software economy, that is, the buying, selling, and distribution of software, the independently-operating software developers will get the short end of the stick, as their software and the platform it runs on will be pushed to the background as Microsoft shines the spotlight on their proprietary Metro app store. Everything that's not in the app store will slowly fade out of general consciousness, and the developers who distribute them will find that their endeavors are not profitable anymore.
Notch's fears are well-founded and I support the statement he's made.
You have hit the nail right on the head. It's refreshing to find comments like yours, people who actually see through it all and see where Microsoft are heading. Microsoft aren't stupid enough to try to do it all in one go, because people would rebel, but they'll be pushing for it bit by bit, deprecating the desktop with each subsequent version until it's too late, until developers lose interest. Just as you say.
They pulled exactly the same stunt with Microsoft Flight Simulator, by axing the development team and then bringing out a closed platform version of the simulator called "Flight", which had been dumbed down and had all the scenery removed. Microsoft's intention was to then sell it, piecemeal through GFWL. It was an utter flop, a perfect example of Microsoft's failure to understand it's customers.
I'm so glad that people like Notch and Newell come out in public against Microsoft. Microsoft just want to monopolise everything but in the end it seems that these stunts always backfire.

Instead of improving on a already awesome OS "WIN7" with a "service pack 2" to optimize file transfers and all the other BS ppl say win8 is faster at. I, and I alone, chose the color, and if I want I can even change the color now, 8 years later, if I want and guess what? The car will still work. Maybe not better, but it will work at the least as well as it had before the upgrade. The lights still work, and if not, someone will fix them. If Minecraft doesn't work on Win8, it's because the program lacks the code, not that the system lacks anything whatsoever. Notch is a spoiled, Richie-Rich type who blames his angst on anyone who happens to be near him at the time. His real problem is a need to be worshiped, a daunting need to be richer than he already is, and a desire to continue hurting the very people making him rich and giving him the power to hurt them. We, the American public, purchasing a game that is second rate in every facet of its being are the ones guilty of creating men like Notch. Men who feel no guilt for their ability to trick others into paying for their own labor out of their own pockets. WE bought it, we fixed it, we even improved mightily upon it, (not that hard since it sucked so hard to start with), and then, with incredible arrogance, spits in our faces, tells us he will not support the product and in fact, wishes no one to buy the game Minecraft, if they have Win8 installed, because he don't like Win8 or the company that made this game a household brand by putting it on the Xbox list of games available. Minecraft should be banned on the grounds it forces people to use only that OS the programmer determines to be profitable to his cause. Last note people: Notch loves Xbox, at least while he's still on it. One thing is clear...the Republican party's constant attempt at creating a dumbed-down America, is working - too many people are siding with Notch on this matter, and the man is just one small lisp from pronouncing himself King of Gaming. Remember, when it first came out it barely functioned. Buy a car that runs on any road, or at least live where the city will fill the holes in the road you use every day. Buy a car you want in the color of your choice. Burn your copy of Minecraft.........................before it's too late!
On the contrary, it is microsoft trying to close the PC, and not have it Open any more. Windows being an open OS made it what it was, and made them their money from around the globe, well done notch for not giving into greed, and making a stand!, well done valve for improving gaming on linux, and working with nvidia to make decent drivers. I just have a problem with microsoft trying to force things on ppl even though the previous OS "Win7" works just fine. I'm sure in the future microsoft will perfect the Win 8 OS. Which brings me to another conundrum. Why come out with a brand new OS after 4 years?? Why not call win 8 a SP 2 for win 7 they are in my words same shit wrapped in a different bag. Dont get me wrong im all for the advancement of OS but not in a manner or slapping it together as they have. I love my mouse and i love my start button since when is that a F'n crime.

2 Like Windows 8 is just fine once you realize the metro interface is just a full screen start menu... Involving gaming... every game I have tried runs fine. Windows 8 is also better optimized for file transfers, threading and video encoding. Don't knock it till you try it!
I have been gaming since for close to 25yrs now on many consoles, pc's, and playgrounds. As time and gaming moves on you start to see a pattern- at least i have- new consoles come out - cries of pc gaming is gonna die! Consoles get old and cries of consoles are gonna die - pc gaming rules all.
It is the same old thing just different media to put your games on. 5 1/4 floppy with Karataka is alot different then downloading Dust onto my ps3. But the gaming is still the same.
Minecraft is one of my favorite new games and i have enjoyed it alot on pc and xbox live- xbl a little more just because how easy it is for a few people to play it in the same room. Anyways its playing fine on Win8 but it will be a while before I can give my finale eval of win8. There seems to be alot of panicking in the below posts which all seem to be without any reason. My advice; give it a try - play as often as you can- DO NOT watch reality tv, and everything will be fine. No company can successfully make a closed gaming system - it will always find a way to slip out.
Oh yeah, windows vista really was a horrible system for gaming do to all the hidden resources it used in the background- a RAM hog. Win 7 was alot better. And i can say the same about alot of consoles.
I would love to see google chrome release a free or cheap OS that was as clean and low resource as chrome browser is. We gamers don't need resource hogs running in the background.
By the time I'm done with my behemoth of a backlog of games, Windows 9 or even 10 will be out and I can choose something else besides the unappealing looking Windows 8. It's just like when I went from Windows XP to Windows 7. Every computer retailer labeled their computers with "comes with Windows Vista" for a period, which I assume was supposed to entice to buy their stuff, but that backfired. Then Windows 7 came out and I no longer had to shun their stores and now I have a Windows 7 laptop gaming computer. My backlog begins in 2006 (still playing games from 2000-2004), so I can handle most of those games, even though this is only a laptop (Dual Core, 4 GB RAM, Radeon HD 6650). I think the same will happen now, that computer retailers will pretend like Windows 8 is all fine and dandy and it's hardly possible to get a new computer that doesn't come with Windows 8. I can bide my time until the moment is right and another Windows OS comes along.
Weird that it's coming out in a month, but most of us have been able to get it for a long time now.
Windows 7 does everything I need it to, untill I am completely forced to change OS's because of Direct X 12 wont be on win 7 or something to that effect, i will say NO win Win8. Its just an adoption from the windows smart phone, its the EXACT same OS, which is fucking usless unless you have a touch screen monitor, and who the fuck has one of those? half the shit in there is emulated, not a hard coded operating system, restrictions up the ying yang, and hurts game developers so much its rediculas, its like they smashed pieces of xbox live with windows smart phone OS, EPIC FAIL!!!! and the sales are so going to show that its a fail as well... no one wants it, hardly anyone likes it from all parts of the world, and even game developers dont either, but its pretty sad that microsoft are focing ppl to buy a fucking console to play games if they stick with their current mindset...

1 Like Minecraft, as it is designed today, will run on Windows 8.
I've been running Windows 8 on a laptop for about 6 months. I've recently updated to the RTM version. While the Modern UI (Metro) stuff is there and is forced in some ways, it doesn't prevent older games from running as long as they were compatible on Windows 7.
This means Steam and the games you download from it still run. They just don't use the Modern UI features.
Plus old games get boosted performance with Windows 8. There are several refinements to the OS that make it perform much more efficiently meaning you've got more resources available for boosting the performance of your games.
I agree with "Notch" that Microsoft should not force developers into a closed ecosystem like Apple has done with it's App Store. That would be bad. But Microsoft has done it's job to make sure that the old system is still there and performs better than before. You just have to get around the weird-ness that comes along with using Windows 8 (esp if not on a touch screen).

I wasn't going to switch from Windows 7 anyway, not after they made that stupid metro thing obligatory.
Apparently despite overclocking being in the uefi/bios if you overclock and run w8 expect a lot of their new bsods. i saw a few people who overclocked their gpu by a single mhz to find a bsod. this is another reason why I won't be upgrading to w8.

1 Like someone needs to create a new gaming only operating system and do away with sh*tty Apple and Microsoft from taking millions of dollars and locking us away from things. i just want an open OS that u can do as u like and everything works but its made especially for gaming. i dont want touch screen interface. its not fun or cool. just difficult and inaccurate and i grantee it will be so glitchy when it comes out at least for the first year!
@GH05T-666 Yeah, unfortunately it's not Linux, it's just too raw. There needs to be one developed from the ground up for the purpose of being plug and play. Something where you decide how much control you want over it. I hate how Microsoft blocks you from having permissions over your own computer.
1 Like i would just like to say, i think with the efforts that valve are putting into the gaming scene on Linux, its starting to be a very viable option, wine(used for playing windows programs on linux) has come an extremely long way from what i remembered it, and can play alot of windows based games (I mean modern by this). and once more, its completely open and free. the only thing letting Linux down is propitiatory professional software, and games.... and the games situation atm is w.i.p.
@GH05T-666 Well yea, that would be great but in a free(ish?) market that will never happen. Everyone wants a piece of the pie. And besides, monopolies usually work out bad for the consumers.

6 Like I have often been quick to jump at new versions of windows (having been considering OS options since Dos1), however I got all "luditey" after XP because it worked quite well and certainly better than Vista(gag). So when I finally capitulated and got Win7 I was really pleasantly surprised how good Win7 was. I doubt I will risk my current perfect stability and gaming fun for another unproven OS for at least the first 12 months. As for Notch, just take the money man.... I would...
