Mojang’s downloadable console game driving $340,000 in daily revenue, company on course to double profits year-over-year.
Minecraft for the Xbox 360 continues to perform at a healthy clip. Swedish news site IT24 reports today (translated by MCV Nordic) that Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition is currently selling at a rate of 17,000 copies per day, driving revenue of $340,000 every 24 hours.
As of late July, Minecraft: Xbox 360 had sold more than 3 million copies, raking in more than $60 million in total revenue.
Additionally, the site reports that Mojang is on course to nearly double its annual profit year-over-year. Mojang managing director Carl Manneh told the outlet the studio will haul in $17.2 million this year, up from the $8.9 million it took in last year.
Upon launch on May 9, Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition became profitable in just one hour, selling more than 400,000 copies during its first 24 hours on sale, and breaking all previous Xbox Live arcade digital sales records. The game reached 1 million in sales in just five days, and recorded more unique users on Xbox Live than Call of Duty: Black Ops for the week of May 14.
Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition was developed by 4J Studios, the Scotland-based shop that built Xbox Live Arcade titles Perfect Dark, Banjo-Kazooie, and Banjo-Tooie. It retails for $20. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's review.

Buc, def chex the demo.
To answer your questions, no and yes. Top 10 games for me life time and I've been a gamer for 28 years.
@buccomatic It's random each time, depending on the "seed". A seed is like a random number/word that is used a reference for each world. So you can possibly use someone else's seed and get their world.
Does Microsoft know that there are that many copies being sold? I guess not, or else there would have been no 'new XBox' references.
I swear these Mojang guys must have have sold their souls to the devil.
How can a game with such simple 8 bit pixel graphics make so much $$$$$. I myself cant even stop playing the d4mn thing!!
@keyb0red Wouldn't that rather suggest, then, that YOU sold your soul to the devil if you find "a game with such simple 8-bit pixel graphics" so fun that you can't stop playing it?
@keyb0red I love Minecraft because it reinforces the idea that graphics are entirely subsidiary to good gameplay and if the gameplay is fun enough the graphics become almost entirely unimportant. Keep it up Mojang and give an addict some 360 updates!
@Terminal_Omega You are completely right! As much as I LOVE the realistic graphics coming out... I rather play a game that has 8 bit pixel graphics that's fun
For a game that is infinitely better on PC, and has low system requirements, why do people insist on buying the inferior version?
@Syk0_k03r Good god, is anybody else just tired of arrogant PC gamers? It's like a group of religious zealots that just can't stop trying to sell everyone of their religion. We get it already. Your system is more powerful than consoles and some things are better on it.
people stopped playing game on their PC in the early 90's.
go to vgchartz.com Look at the game sales of MW2,3 on consoles compared to PC, embarrassing, the psp version even beat it, lol
@RawhideSphinx no. I presume that most ppl who bought x360 minecraft for 4 player Co-op.
@RawhideSphinx Thats because its alot harder to get a pc that can run Mw3 then it is to buy a console -_-, plus half the people with those types of computers dont pay for games.
more people play the dreamcast than PC
all PC gamers can do is look at games like uncharted 2 and the millions of other games that companies just wont put on PC, because theres only 5 of you out there.
If COD4 is so amazing on PC why was it outsold by consoles 50 to 1
@RawhideSphinx FPS titles again?
FPS on consoles are like the special olympics. I dont know why you keep using them as if they are an advantage to you. I remember when the #1 console COD4 team tried to compete in cevo. They didn't even make the playoffs and couldnt win more than 50% of matches.
Back on topic, if you did a little research you would understand that all the "great" gaming titles were essentially before this big console boom that happened with 360 and ps3. Any true gamer can tell you that they don't make the games with the quality that they used to, and this is because the quality demand by console gamers has gone to shit. Since most big publishers develop games for consoles and port them over to PC, we get stuck with the shitty quality that console gamers demand. They're willing to buy the same re-hash games every year for $60, why would publishers worry about making a good game?
However, why is it that PC only games always seem to be better quality, better graphics, and better support from its developers and community?
Keep living on the hopes that GOW or Halo gives you... we look at those games and laugh at what console gamers call "shooters"
So PC gamers can spend $2000 on a PC, 300 on a chair 1000$ on monitors etc, but cant pay for games and when companies dont put games on PC they complain...The system works. How does Uncharted, GOW, Gears, Halo, and the millon other games only found on consoles look on your PC.?
@muchakachaka Your kidding right? My quad core 2.3 ghz with AMD Radeon? HD 6520G can run mw3 on an average 45-60 fps and it's an $500 laptop. It's probably cheaper now.
Playing on a monitor? I can play on 3 monitors if I want.. I can play on a single 32inch monitor, or I can play on a 50inch HD TV... its all the same. In fact, my 32inch monitor can put more higher resolution than an HDTV.. therefore better graphics than any console.
Squeaky chair? I have a $300 chair that feels like a cloud even after 8 hours of playing. I can also use my wireless sets to play on a couch.
You see thats the difference in PC gaming.. we aren't restricted while consoles are.
Consoles are also restricted by the terrible hardware in their devices... i mean terrible hardware. This in turns restricts PC gaming a bit too because of games being developed on console SDKs and then ported.
To each their own tho... all great ways of passing time. Some of us just have a close mind.
I have a 2000$ PC but like I said people stopped playing games on their PC in the 90's. PC's are for surfing the net, actually I do that more on my PS3...there for people to update their facebook and check emails and write term papers. I'll stick to playing my PS3 and 360 from my soft couch and 55 inch tv. hows playing on you monitor and squeaky chair.
@muchakachaka Very true.
Its hard to convince your mother to drop $2000 on brand new PC to spank amazing FPS... every 4 years.
The adults who do it on their own.. don't pay for many games and especially on games like MW3 which was just like BO, which was just like MW2... and BO2 will be no different.
Us PC gamers stopped playing COD after COD4.. thats when the consoles took it over and drop the franchise to the ground. It was a great game when it was PC only.
I love Minecraft. The only thing I don't like is the way so many other people behave, but it is such a flexible and broad game that you can't help but have a good time. I'm glad that 360 owners are getting in on the fun (but sadly missing out on all the wonderful mods out there). Hopefully it'll make its way onto the PS3 eventually. I'd certainly pick it up for mine, even though I have the PC version.
@Pr0ving4Gr0undz With just a little bit of scrolling down the comments you could have avoided making such a poorly informed comment.
@iamrob7 Well if it havent sold more then the pc version yet it will soon and plus the fact that the game came out later on the xbox. But I guess you can explain why crysis 2 sold more on consoles also right?
I know you love your pc and you don't wan't to see others bash it but it's okay. When they get a computer good enough to run games they will realize why pc is actually good for gaming too, especially when they realize they can play any ps2 and gamecube games they wan't on their pc.
@no_pants_4_u rofl, that was hilarious. I enjoy humiliating bumbling idiots who haven't got the slightest idea what they are talking about, especially when they make me reply multiple times, it entertains me. Stop taking discussions on a gaming website so seriously, it's just a bit of fun. Your animosity and the "I'm only 12 years old" insults are ridiculous. Take care!
@iamrob7 Rob, you sound like a jackass who has WAY too much time on your hands. Congrats on proving a kid (who's most likely around 8 years old) wrong every which way and coming off as a complete jerk in the process. Apparently being a D-bag on the internet gets you off, which is pretty sad.
The thing is, you can still be right and not be jerk about it, but apparently you enjoy being a clown/virgin. Have fun with that, I'm going to the beach with my girlfriend (Judging from your condescending posts, I'm sure you don't encounter the word 'girl' or 'date' too much in your personal life).
Don't bother replying as I won't waste my time to read your no doubt 6 page long retaliation post where you try to put me down and reassert yourself as someone who actually has something intelligent to say . Suffice to say, get a life, loser. Now you feel pretty dumb, right? (Sorry, just HAD to quote you!)
Have a nice day!
@Pr0ving4Gr0undz So you are happy to accept your comment was completely irrelevant and erroneous in terms of this news story then? Well that's good. Presumably you just chose to randomly post that completely irrelevant and erroneous comment here by sheer coincidence then. lol. Unfortunately for you, your comment was incorrect either way.
As I said already, in regards to your now "general" comment that is entirely unrelated to minecraft. EA made more out of the PC this year that any other platform. In 2011 the PC was the single largest platform for games sales by a huge margin and the PC games market (excluding social/casual games) was almost as much as every single console and handheld combined. I expect in 2012 this margin is even greater. (Source - Newzoo, whose clients include almost every major company in gaming)
So no, you are completely wrong on all counts. Even by pitifully backing out of your original intentions, you still fail miserably.
@Pr0ving4Gr0undz That's odd... Blizzard must be having a lot of trouble with their bills.
@iamrob7 I took a look at your comment even before I posted my first comment, tho I did not click on the link. All I said was that developing for consoles is where the money is at and we both know that is true regardless of minecraft, even I.D. said that consoles pays the bills.
Btw I have never played minecraft before.
@Pr0ving4Gr0undz Seeing as you still lack the ability to scroll down a little to where its far more clear, I guess I'll paste it here yet again. Minecraft sold 13,000 copies on the PC in the last 24 hours and continues to do so every day (if you want the source, scroll down the page a little). It has been out on the PC since 2009. The Xbox version is selling 17,000 copies a day and it has been out for less than a year. Now you feel pretty dumb right?
As for Crysis 2, retail numbers are completely meaningless for the PC as the vast majority of PC sales are DD. Retail numbers are all you have. DD numbers are not released and don't chart. With EA having just recently announced that the PC was their biggest market in the last year probably means it did fairly well though, despite it being received fairly poorly as a game by the PC community.
Minecraft is awesome! I wish they would use all this revenue to make modding/hosting servers more user friendly. Also, servers can go down for a day or two sometimes. This is kinda hard to swallow when you think about the millions they are receiving now.
@Nintyfan95 Ah console fanboys, how I love them. Too poor to buy a superior machine then bash them because they are jealous they don't have an awesome like all of us PC gamers.
@Frosty192 You've just made yourself as bad as him.
@Frosty192 Oh, yes, it can be denied. I love my PC, and I love PC gaming, but PC gaming's dependence on Steam and Origin has made it the laughing stock of the gaming community. Even I, a PC gamer of 20 years, barely buy anything for it these days because of this.
@jamyskis I know I did but you can't deny that PC is more superior it is a fact and I am sick of hearing the console fanboys squirt nothing but bs from their mouths. I have all current gen consoles but I keep going back to the PC because I can do everything on their. I do however, use the amazing 360 controller for some games :P
@Nintyfan95 please share your reasons why though.
I perfer not to take a side in some stupid imaginary system war and enjoy playing games on al fronts.
But hey, keep on going with that favortism. I'm sure it'll get you somewhere.
@Darkmoone1 Wise words, friend. I too enjoy it on all fronts. My only constant complaint is the electricity bill to power all the fun stuff, LOL. Again, well said....
@Darkmoone1 Well... there are some objective differences here. For instance, the 360 has native split-screen (though you can do it on PC as well), however the PC version has more content, much higher potential performance, and a slew of mods. Also, a PC can hooked up to a TV and configured for a 360 controller. I mean, it's totally fine if someone plays it on the xbox and enjoys it, but the two versions aren't necessarily equal, regardless of preference.
@Nintyfan95 Strange comment, it's ok to enjoy both versions.. You realise it sells around this on the PC daily still even now, years after being available on the PC right? Around 13,000 copies in the last 24 hours. That's the version that is superior in an endless variety of ways.
Source? And the PC version wasn't released until November last year IIRC.
