@Phazevariance I don't care either. I said that to empathize the reason why it's not coming to 360.. Media Molecule is owned by SONY. Exclusives bad for gamers? Hmm I never heard that before. I agree that it sucks when you can't play a game just because it's on another platform but that's what makes the 3 consoles different, for better or worse. It's a lot of cash but I enjoy the variety we get across the 3 platforms. Just owning one sucks, though.
[UPDATE] UK developer says it will "always be involved with [the franchise], at least a bit, and there's lots more fun yet to come!"
2009's original Little Big Planet and its 2011 sequel both scored a string of strong critical plaudits for being highly customizable, whimsical platforming games. Despite that success, however, franchise developer Media Molecule won't be making a new Little Big Planet game any time soon.
According to Media Molecule's studio director Siobhan Reddy (via Edge), the UK-based developer is "stepping away from Little Big Planet to focus on some new ideas." Unfortunately, further specifics as to what Media Molecule will be working on were not offered.
Media Molecule is staffing up for its new project, proclaiming on the jobs portal of its website that "new things [are] forming" at the developer. The studio's new job postings indicate that the game will be for portable devices or the PlayStation 3.
The next Little Big Planet game scheduled to arrive is for the PlayStation Vita, and it is currently in development at Double 11 and Tarsier Studios. For more on the portable title, check out GameSpot's most recent preview of Little Big Planet for the Vita.
[UPDATE] Media Molecule recently offered an update via Twitter.
"Loyal sackfolk," reads the note. "Please be reassured that we will always be involved with LBP, at least a bit, and there's lots more fun yet to come!"
@Rovelius - I really could care less if its a 'proud ps3 exclusive' since i already onwn it on my ... wait for it... ps3! Doesn't change my stance on how exclusives are bad for gamers.
ya, the levels in littlebigplanet one were getting worse and worse (from those free costumes,h4h and duplacte levels)
@Braden-O I think we did because of all the new tools, materials, options, stickers, costumes and decorations that they added. They also improved the graphics and the lighting. And lets's not forget that the levels being made on LBP1 were getting worse towards the end of last year.
Seems Media Molecule knew what I was saying when I said I didn't really need a new LBP game. They're good but they don't really have those standout single players and I don't see the customisation stuff improving radically. They need time to work on something new really before coming back with fresh ideas as LBP on vita is basically just LBP with a few touch controls. It looks kind of interesting but equally not. Still LBP was a notable franchise so hopefully they can do even more.
Even though this is somewhat sad news, I think it's not really bad. These guys have two awesome Little Big Planet games out right now, and I think they both offer quite an enjoyable experience. Seems to me they're smart enough to know when to stop while they're ahead. I'm looking forward to see what else they've got planned, though.
Talented developers like Media Molecule should be allowed to follow any creative whims they have, or video games will become stagnant. Keep them excellent games coming, MM!!
LOL @ dissing CoD when they can sell 20 million copies each time for basically releasing the same game over and over(and then make a killing off of $15 map packs) Why the hell wouldn't they do this if they can keep getting away with it?
They didn't even want to make a sequel in the first place, but popular demand led them to. It's nice to see a developer that knows when not to overdo it with one franchise.
@Rovelius thank you, i dont know how my question meets the criteria, it was just an innocent question
Good to hear, I love Little Big Planet as much as the next guy but I don't like the idea of a series being milked beyond recognition *cough* Call Of Duty ** cough. Nice to see some developers aren't money grabbers and focus on trying to better themselves rather then offering gimmicks.
It's great that they are focusing on other games. However, I would love for them to release little expansion pack DLC's that are the same engine/game but a whole additional campaign to play through. The user created levels are fun and all but my friends and I love playing through the story mode made by MM.
I think they'll make a Little big planet game for the PS4 but there isn't any need for another on the PS3. I'm interested in what their next game will be.
good news: well gives MM something else to develop but what and when? not much to improve LBP for just mabye a few updates and add-ons now and then bad news? this means sackboys end? will MM hand over?
Variety is good, just don't forget the reason MM is so wildly successful. To walk away permanently would be very foolish. LBP deserves a rest, but it also deserves more attention in the future.
I'm glad that they're trying to expand what they make they're very talented devs and can definitely bring even a better new IP! But I'm sure LBP won't just fade away there will be DLC and such at least for the PSV title.
This is actually great news to experience these developers new games, LBP 2 is still freshness, an no rush for LBP3 2012-2015. last thing we need is LBP every year like a Madden or COD game, cause you know how goes lol.
I know I'll get modded for this and thumbs downed to Oblivion., but I'm really not keen on this franchise and I'm glad they are working on another IP. It feels way too kiddy and the platforming lacks precision.
@FamousCalibur IP means 'intellectual property'. Simply put, LittleBigPlanet is Media Molecule's intellectual property, meaning they own it.
awesome, no need for a new LBP for a long time, lets see what these talented folks can come up with next.
I have a good feeling about their next game. Creativity seems to be very prevalent in Mm. ^^ I just hope EA games doesn't come and buy them out. There's nothing I hate in this world more than EA.
they must add mouse and keyboard functionality to LBP 2 , that will make making levels much much easier and more fun.
right when we thought that LBP couldn't get any better they have stroke another one in LBP 2 and surprised us with the new stuff , I trust these people and i am sure that they will come with something pretty innovative .
I think LittleBigPlanet has reached it's potential. It can't get any better without a complete overhaul. LBP one had the charm, and LBP2 has the features. For a third game to have any success, it's going to have to have a lot of new features, and in my opinion, be a completely different style of game. I'm looking forward to seeing what's going to happen next!
I'm sad, I thought that the next one would be in 3D (not with glasses, but I mean you can move in any direction). That would have made any kind of game designs possible... Now I hope they're gonna do something great again!! =D
LBP comunity user made content have "K**l Justine Beiber".... I dont see any any lady gaga related yet.....
aGiantSquirrel, of course you never heard of them before they made LBP.. it's the first game they made...
I love little big planet. It's one of my favorite games. I never heard of Medial Molecule until they one day come out with one of the greatest games ever made.
Little Big Planet and Little Big Planet 2 will keep people happy for a long time with all the endless user-made content. They should take their time on LBP3.
I would like to see LittleBigPlanet 3. But I agree that they should make a new series or new games with the same qualities but in a different way. Mix it up a bit.
Yeah I'm up for the challenge of going against everyone and saying I'd rather see LBP3 come out. For those saying 'there's nothing else to add!', I laugh at you. More planes (3 is just not enough), real top down and perspective change, 360* movement in a single plane (think platformers like golden axe, double dragon, streets of rage), better editing controls for objects in top-down style levels. I could go on, but you get the idea. Don't get me wrong I'm excited for anything MM makes, but I still have more levels to make and I need more tools!
Well could know see LBP3 on PS4 and could be right. i trust MMs and be looking forward to there new project. through got feeling bit like LBP and could be right:]
MM's a developer that cares about making damn fine games. I have a feeling whatever they make will turn out great.
Media Molecule is an awesome developer. LBP is one of the best new franchises of this gen. Looking forward to their new IP.
WOW THIS IS GREAT AN ACTUAL GAME DEVELOPER THAT WILL NOT JUST CRAP ON A BLANK DISC AND CALL IT A GAME....I CANT WAIT FOR THE NEXT DIME PIECE MM INVENTS
