Mass Effect 4 leaves Shepard behind

BioWare Montreal producer confirms Commander Sherpard's story has come to a close; next game in role-playing game series will feature "very, very different context."

Commander Shepard is gone, but not forgotten. BioWare Montreal producer Fabrice Condominas confirmed to VG247 that Shepard's story is finished, and the captain will not be featured in Mass Effect 4, or whatever the next entry in the series is titled.

"There is one thing we are absolutely sure of--there will be no more Shepard, and the trilogy is over," Condominas said. "This is really our starting point. Now the Mass Effect universe is vast, and very, very rich. So at this point in time, we don't even know what kind of time frame we're going to be in. All we're doing is more gathering ideas from the teams, gathering feedback to see several things."

As for who may replace Shepard as the franchise's leading character, Condominas made clear that BioWare is not simply going to iterate on Shepard.

"So first, we don't want to make 'Shepard 2', or Mass Effect 4 with like, 'oh there's no more Shepard but you're a soldier in the universe'. So this will be a very, very different context for sure, and nothing has been decided on the rest," he said.

Last month alongside the departure of BioWare founders Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka, the company announced that a new Mass Effect game was forming at the studio. Details are non-existent on the project, but it has been confirmed that Mass Effect 3 producer Casey Hudson is attached to the game, said to be a "full" Mass Effect title.

What a load of horse dung!  I loved the way the trilogy played into each other and the way Commander Shepard got along with his peers.  Commander Shepard is the Mass Effect series to remove him is to create a totally different game.  Which means for me is if there is no Commander Shepard then it really isn't Mass Effect 4 it will be like any other game and I will look elsewhere!

It's kind of a crazy dream of mine that they will make this game in a fashion similar to the multiplayer, where you have a choice of not only different classes, but races as well, with slightly differing storylines depending on the race and class you choose.

I would love to play something like this, but I'm sure I'll like whatever Bioware comes up with.

Kinda cruel to force Shep to give their life to save the galaxy. If they are not going to make a 4 with him/her in it or at least have him training soldiers in the N7 program or something, Make a DLC for ME3 that if you survived the end of the 3rd one that they go back looking for him and find him and have a conclusion to his life, he gets married and settles down or actual closure to his/her story. Even a cut scene that explains they found shep alive or they couldnt find him depending on the ending on ME3. Leaving it at the end where if you survived but nothing else is kind of cruel. Over the course of the series people grew attachments to shep and his crew and to just kind of say he has to die or he can survive but thats it is unfair. Even the extended scene doesnt even mention him when Hacket talks. One person saved the galaxy, one person had to sacrifice themselves to destroy etc the reapers. It wasnt anyone BUT Shep who saved the galaxy and to not even mention him in the extended scene is bull. The DLC Citadel wasnt even closure per say. You cant even really interact with the crew. Thats not closure either.

I would love to see open world game like fallout 3/skyrim in mass effect universe, Where you could choose race, gender and other character traits at start.

I would be really happy with a Game set like a few hundred years after so i can see what my decisions(some of them being a bit rash simply for the current war against the reapers) will have done to the universe(curing genophage, savingRachni and so on).

And i would like the kind of system Dragon age origins had where your decisions on the character(Gender and so on) has to do with your origin and how the people around reacts to you.
Would also love if you could maybe chose between some races(i prefer being a human but ive seen alot of people who wants to be an asari).

An origin i know i would like would be kind of the earthborn story, to start of in a kind of bad/renegade life and the something(idonno what) happens that pulls you into this major/wonderful/fun/sad adventure.
...Yupp.

I would welcome a game set shortly after ME3 using the destroy ending (make destroy canonical) and you'd play an unlawful young asari criminal / smuggler somewhere in the terminus system who would during the course of the game move on to build her own crime syndicate, in either a hard-justice subdue style (paragon) or kill everyone who opposes (renegade) style....would be a nice experience instead of being the hero to be the criminal...

you know what you should do is make ME4 during  ME3 and make your ME3's multiplier Hero history.

No need to worry Shepard fans. He will eventually be playable in ME4 through some DLC. You will, of course, have to have the first 19 ME4 DLCs to access him. KEEP MILKING US EA! I LOVE THAT WE ALL FALL FOR IT! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

well i have few questions for EA

1- should i hold on ME3's data save ?!!!!! -___-

2- if you are going to make a new storyline (mean without Shapard's T_T), is there will be a selection among the races to play by?!!!!!

3- it's going to be awesome to see the universe after the events of winning the war against the Reapers..the destroyed mass-relaies,each world disconnected from others,Krogan's healing,Salarian new station with new breeding Krogan, the new race "The Geth" ,and for Shepard it be nice to show there is some element's from ME3 like if Shepard lived (most the players done this option) let him/her doing a brief appearance as a cripple wounded retired soldier , and if dead a monument  in the Citadel... :)

4-hope you don't plan for multi-player taking part of the single-player storyline (that\s awful 'o`) not all of us have a good internet connection though T_T

5- for EA proven its FAILURE for carrying-on the game's elements.. like in Dragon Age Origin (the game was a blast) ..they made 6 beginnings of story-lines depends on the race you chose to play by.. then share the same events in the middle of the story..and had 6 endings ..then EA released an expansion titled  "The Awakening" none of DAO elements been seen and made a fuss among the DAO's fans like the endings of ME3..then they made a brand new character in DA2 and made you forget about their laziness DA franchises

I'm up for ME4 with no Sheppard. As long as they contain the same type of formula that made the first 3 games so much fun to play such as the gameplay, the different alien types like the asari, and a meaningful storyline, I'm all in. I love Shepard and all but the Shepard storyline was getting a little stale. I mean there is only so much you can do with one character and have it not stretch so thin that it gets derivative with no substance left and everybody gets bored of it. It would be nice if they were to improve on having more choices that will impact the story a great deal and more customization options. I loved the multiplayer too so improvements on that would be fantastic as well.

For me Shepperd has to be in there it kinda maked the game nice for me and yup im also a DA fan what i kinda would like to see for once depends how you make your choices to get a happy ending or a bad ending for once for the rest play with it :P

EA: "We will find another way, human!"

Diana Allers: .. and in other news, EA announces ME4 with no Shepard, easier enemies, worse story line . but with better graphics. I want that shit. To find out more, watch 'Battle Tits', every night at 69:00 pm.

Mass Effect IS Shepard and leaving him out of ME4 it would be disregarding every emotional ties gamers built with his persona - and the all the characters surrounding him- during the course of the mass effect trilogy. If we assume that ME4 is a sequel, a few things must be addressed. First of all, it should be made clear weather Sheapard lived or died. If he lived then he has to make an appearance, and if he died, they must emphasize his legacy.

I feel quite sad that they decided to leave him out of ME4, almost like nostalgia before hand. I really liked him and the game wouldn't be the same without.

Wouldn't mind playing an Asari justicar, or story from its perspective, or a Turian general. Other races have heroes too. Wishful thinking as players are dumb and would probably prefer a human at the helm. We also know how sexist the gaming community is.

isshiah

@Janpieterzun Ii'd prefer to play as a human so i can make a character that looks like myself. apart from that, i don't mind playing as another race or gender.

there's a lot of judgement packed into your post. i'm not sure whether to disagree with it, to be honest,

It would be so good if Shepard would be still in Mass Effect 4. If you will hear Mass Effect, you just imagine him. He is a hero, he just have to make it through though. ;)

It must be a prequel, considering the divergent nature of the possible endings. Depending which one you chose, humanity would be in vastly different situations after that moment

@ck10304 they could make one ending canonical, as usually in other series, the destroy ending with high ems seems the most appropriate

but acording to this NEWS it seems he did... :(

I love ME and I can't wait for more however I hope that they kinda do a Baldur's Gate kinda thing and allow you to chose a race. I like being human but at times I'd like to play something differant. Similar to how multiplayer on ME3 allowed us to sample differant races.

@Alpha1Nova I don't understand, why is media obsessed with prequels. Aside from cashing on the poorly stolen story/plot. Do a search on story that came long before any of the Mass Effect games. That is a fact. I leave it to all of you to find what that game is. And you will see why it's a theft. What is the point of playing something you already know the outcome of every conflict in plot-holed end story. Timeline in this case is completely irrelevant. It's similar to what they are doing with Hobbit movie. Utter nonsense, I only ask why?! You already know how the complete Lord of the rings story ark ends. What is the point again? All conflicts can be done within the existing game. Example, stumbling upon a Prothean beacon that, I don't know teleports your spirit/mind so you can witness the events of the past. Since Protheans had the ability to sense the presence of others being in a room long before him. It could explain the existence of such technology in a game and so on,... Why make a complete game based on those events? For me personally ME1=masterpiece, ME2=some elements were improved at the expense of what made ME1 superior. All in all a very bad game except Arrival. In a long run it was completely pointless. ME3=no f*cking comment. If they decide to go "flashback mode" on a complete game, I will not touch it. Waste of time, also I know many others who feel the same. I will be glad for all of you who wish to "replay the past known outcomes", it's good for you. Me on the other hand will give them a wide berth. They could also introduce another element in game space battles or Protheans who managed to escape the Reapers. They could have done a lot with existing lore elements. And yet the chose not to. Why I don't know. I'm not the ceo of the Bioware. But, this company is a shadow of it's former self.

@veryraiser So, yeah... you went on a pretty big rant there. lol. I agree with some of what you said, and respect pretty much everything else. But dude, it's not that I want a Prequel, it's that I'm interested in other things that already existed BEFORE the main storyline. Oxy-Moron, yeah I know. lol. but prequels usually tie in with the main story. Look at what happened for the trilogy. We barely needed to know information about the first contact war. I just think it would be fun to leave the trilogy's story behind and make a fresh new game... but still with the ME feel. In other words, they don't even have to include anything from the trilogy. just experiencing the First Contact War would be extremely thrilling. And I'm sure I am not the only one who feels this way.

Alpha1Nova
Alpha1Nova

@veryraiser Yes, I agree. Everybody has their own personal taste. But based on what you are saying, you just want a re-make of the ME Trilogy... I believe that most people would oppose that idea because it is too similar. The galaxy has already been saved. Why save it again?

veryraiser
veryraiser like.author.displayName 1 Like

@Alpha1Nova If they are to make a "what happened ". I would be more for something very new either distant future, or surviving "colonies" of previous aliens and their contributions to save those who will come after them. Since Reapers reside in void space between galaxies. Perhaps some of them escape and get picked up by all previous generations that survived the cycle. By that I mean all those races made something like a giant refugee space hub, lol. And are battling completely different form of enemy. Enemy that makes Reapers children toys, but not in a our Milky Way. They get "saved" only to be thrown into a even more savage conflict. Something to that effect, that would be nice for me. I'm not saying that there is no ME without Shepard, but still ... For me it simply won't be the same, it would lose that ME1 awesomeness. You know, different people different tastes, right:)

Tyblt

The Mass Effect Universe is such a rich one in of itself, they don't need to go forward from the debacle of Mass Effect 3 (timeline speaking). I'd love to see something taking place during the Krogan Uprising, the rise of the Geth, Salarian STG missions.

One thing that is very important is to distance themselves from Shepard's crew, to make it seem like somembody else's story....and equally important, multiplayer is not something to be just stapled on like was done in ME3. Either have it, and make sure it's functional, and actually enriches the game, or don't. Don't half job it. (personally I hope it's not on there at all)

PCsama
PCsama

@Tyblt  i agree with you for want to see what will become from Krogan,Geth and Salarian after the universe been saved

but i am not a big fan for the online multiplayer  thing ..cause i have a bad internet connection

Petdoc1991
Petdoc1991

For Mass effect 4 could you go to a different galaxy like Andromeda or the Triangulum thorough the use of worm holes? Or have a main character from those galaxies ( kind of like a human)? Maybe the reapers were created by people who came from one of the galaxies in order to have  intergalactic war with the other? There could be like a super reapers who uses stars for energy as one of the main antagonists for one of the games. There are really a lot of possibilities that this series can go with, im excited to see what happens.

ValkarianVI
ValkarianVI

@Petdoc1991  Reapers were created by Leviathan's the apex race before the first cycle, they made them to 'deal' with the synthetic problem. 'The created will always rebel against the creator' Basically harbinger is the first Reaper made in the image of the Leviathans.

@MightyMillers It felt like a total downgrade from the original trilogy. I liked it when I was younger, just not now. I played the first three for a long time but I hate them now. Many reasons. But let's just hope that ME sticks with the same FEEL of the original series. If they can capture the same feel and mechanics again, it will most likely be a success.

Wow. Still complaining about the ending.  The EC was fine, move on with your lives.  The mob is gone yet you still have your "Me, too" mob mentality.  They fixed it, you can stop crying.

@CaptWaffle Um, no. I would have agreed with you until you said that the EC 'fixed' it. It didn't. It was more of an awkward cliffhanger than a complete ending, still riddled with ambiguity and plot holes if you concentrate hard enough. It fixed some plot holes, but opened up to new ones with some others still left unanswered. Whether this was done purposely or just because of bad writing I'm still unsure.
