League of Legends dev opposes SOPA

hi gamers, I haven't seen anywhere gamespot's stand on SOPA, but i've seen some gaming comunity journalists that won't attend to E3 due to ESA's por-SOPA stand, we should ask gamespot to do this too, this anti-piracy law its far from being for "costumer's benefit" If any of you know how to get gamespot's attention then you should act now. Sorry for misspelling, English It's not my native language.

@Jaxith My original post referred to the industry giants who are lobbying for this bill such as the big entertainment publishers who stand to benefit most from this type of control. I'm all for developers such as Riot who promote a healthy internet community based on their creations.

Riot Games just made me want to play their game. :) Screw ESA-- Scumbags who think they can just hog the game industry for themselves and represent it-- They know nothing of Gamers, Developers, GAMES or creativity. Old business snakes that care for nothing but their own fortune-- You're still gonna die of cancer or loss of breath, old coots. For the Legal Councel of Riot games to open an AMA thraed on Reddit, now that wasn't expected, but very welcome too. CBS are money-grabbers too, i'm not suprised at their support. Naturally, GameSpot is forced to oblidge, But i'm sure the editors are still fighting against it. This bill helps no one. Piracy is too large scale and powerful to be stopped-- Not everywhere is america. And used games damage the industry more than piracy anyway. As for songs--- They are SONGS. 3-4 minutes long beats and vocals. Finding them is easy as anything. Buying them on iTunes means you want to SUPPORT the singer/band, NOT the company.

The bill isn't going to do anything to piracy. There are already Firefox plugins that allow you to access sites that have been blacklisted by the US gov. If this bill is passed, expect to be able to access your normal torrent/streaming/porn sites like normal in a matter of days. I'm pretty sure you can circumvent this by entering the IP for the site in address bar as well. SOPA is useful only in compromising the privacy of internet users, and screwing with internet-based economy. I wouldn't be surprised if companies started moving the domains for their sites to foreign servers in response (most domain registrars are US based). The government having such control and access to the traffic coming in and out of your company is desirable to very few people. They say that S.O.P.A.'s a bill to fight pyracy, but in fact all they want to do is control the flow of information on the internet, so they can censor anything they want. I mean, even a monkey can see that... We all know online piracy isn't something that can be stopped, they're just using it as an excuse to try to limit our freedom without us noticing. And to that, I say go **** yourselves, you bunch of greedy, corrupt ***lickers. P.S: Sopa means "soup" in portuguese.

Video game companies are pretty much switching to steam in order to help fight online piracy. It'll slow piracy down but SOPA is just plain crazy.

Pretty much everybody should oppose SOPA, this act would be more harmful than the current piracy of copyright material. No surprise at all that some sports conglomerate is at the head of this. They did away with DVRs that could detect and remove commercials. Screw the NFL and screw the politicians in their idiot pockets.

I love how dumb the ESA is. NO ONE LIKES YOU AND THEY ALL DISAGREE WITH YOU!!! Plus, the NFL and CBS are worthless too for supporting something like this. Should they release something to protect against copy right infringement... yes, but should it effectively limit any and all creativity too? F no! I am a guitarist and this could affect both my games and my art. So for all those who support this crap go **** yourselves.

I was impressed with what Riot's lawyer said on the Reddit forums. He provided some good examples of how this could affect not just their community but the internet in general. The best way you can get people behind a cause is to let them know how it will affect them. Maybe a bit selfish, but it's effective.

@toddx77 That did indeed strike me in particular, and most tellingly, while CBS has come out in favor of SOPA, GameSpot's editorial team has published quite a few articles that are vehemently against it, despite GameSpot being a CBS subsidiary. Of particular note - not ONE person on the Board of Management at CBS Corp. is under 60.

Respect for Riot Games actually stating their opinion on the agreement. It's easy to say yes or no, but they've actually provided a solid statement. Bravo!

@Fergood. some people like watching others people play games for 2 reasons. .1: They're Handicap, and can only watch games they enjoy like movies. 2. People are on the fence about a certain game, and instead of buying new or used and getting hassled by returning game to store they wouldhave a for sure answer by watching it on youtube and streams. Even some games on PSN and Minis and Live don't have a preview andthey just don't want to blow money on something they would never play.

I think SOPA is a great idea. We also need more highway patrol officers, more speed limits, more traffic cameras, more checkpoints on our roads with more security personnel and search dogs, more neighborhood patrols, more speed bumps, more radiation scanners, more courts to handle traffic disputes, wireless ID systems on our vehicles and wireless ID devices permanently injected INSIDE our bodies right after we are born . . . TSA searching everywhere for everyone and everything. Once everyone strictly obeys every single law by any means necessary, our lives will improve dramatically. Like the Google CEO said, unless you're doing something wrong, then you shouldn't worry about 24/7 surveillance.

@parrot_of_adun I was under the impression the ESA works the same way the RIAA and MPAA work, so my comparison while crude to me still holds water, ESA is the voice in Washington.

@tachsniper That's actually not how it works, as the ESA is not a parent corporation to it's members, it's merely a trade association. Epic, Nival, Microsoft, 38 Studios and Trion are all officially against SOPA , and are ESA members. Quite a few ESA members don't agree with the them on many issues (which begs the question, why be a part of it?).

@the_requiem Well that's my point, it's not about loss of intellectual ownership or anything, it's just about some big corporation's bottom line (despite a lack of evidence that piracy seriously effects it). But even so, this seems to be across the spectrum. Indie devs rarely have the luxury of a guaranteed check, and yet all those I've heard from don't support it.

I've enjoyed League of Legends back in the day, I also bought a few characters and gave Riot games my hard earned money, In retrospect I'm still glad I did, good on you Riot Games. SOPA is not the way to stop Internet piracy, it does more harm than good by far IMO.

I've never played their games, but I'm glad to hear they are against this terrible bill.

One more thing. As someone already pointed it, it isn't govt. pushing this bill. No matter which party is in power, lobbyists will bankroll them to get the bill passed. One common principle that every politician follows is... follow the money.

@parrot_of_adun: Not supporting SOPA here, but one reason for that could be that content creators make their money when a distributor/publisher picks it up. The ones who lose money from piracy aren't creators but distributors and publishers.

It's rather telling that content CREATERS all tend to oppose SOPA. It's the content that want it...

boycott NFL

I think that every company should manage their own way to prevent piracy, not the goverment. Me, Im pretty much done playing LOL for now, its full of trolls.

League of Legends is by far the funnest RTS game I've played. P.S. Sorry for the off-topic comment, I just had to say that. :P

Associations such as the NFL probably support SOPA due to rights on NFL game sales, less piracy = more money. As toddx77 said, NFL is run by old schoolers, and from my experience the older you are, the less you know about the internet "generally speaking" (Oh, this banner says I won a Ferrari, all I got to do is click it! Click... -spyware/malware.) There will always be music/movie piracy, whether we do it over the internet or burning a copy (would significantly reduce piracy...), or there's always been underground programs of which have allowed users to share just about everything, and it staying under the radar (not like napster/winmx/kazaa). As for video games, I believe there are ways to prevent/minimize piracy, such as (controversial, though effective) require internet to play, hence, passing through authentication servers that grant access to the game. Example, MMO's. Only way around it is buggy/laggy private servers, that also practically encourage hacking... My opinion on that, if you got a modern age PC, means you got internet. Those that have come to complain on forums about internet connection required for a game, cry me a river... If the individual finds it worthy of his time to post something most don't care about, he's got an internet connection, so what's to complain about. Ok I'm going off-track... I understand the reasons behind these acts, however, these acts seem to do harm just as much as do good...
