I wonder if COD:MW2 would have made that much if it were only on 360 (I say 360 and not PS3 because usually games sell better on 360 - no fanboy)? It's impossible to tell but it's interesting. Reach is my fav Halo game since Combat Evolved.
Microsoft hailing its own Xbox 360-exclusive shooter as "biggest US entertainment launch of 2010"; unit sales figures not provided.
To the delight of gamers and to the horror of significant others everywhere, Halo: Reach went on sale on Tuesday. Microsoft pulled out all the stops in promoting the critically hailed sci-fi shooter's launch, staging midnight sales events at retailers across the country and waging a media campaign with Covenant-like intensity.
One part of Microsoft's promotion of Halo: Reach is the inevitable announcement of the Xbox 360 exclusive's massive day-one haul. In the first 24 hours after the game went on sale on September 14, the game raked in over $200 million in the United States and Europe. (Canada was not mentioned.) Though not enough to beat the multiplatform Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's record of $310 million in 24 hours, it was enough to best Halo 3's $170 million day-one haul in September 2007. The last Halo game, 2009's Halo 3: ODST, made $125 million in just over two weeks.
Microsoft did not offer unit sales figures for Halo: Reach but did hail it as the "biggest US entertainment launch of 2010." It's the last game in the series to be developed by its creator, Bungie. Once owned by Microsoft, the studio split away in 2007 to become an independent entity in which Microsoft held a large stake. Then, this April, the suburban Seattle shop announced a 10-year partnership with Activision that gave the latter company exclusive publishing rights to an all-new intellectual property.
Unlike Halo, the new series will be multiplatform and will be wholly owned by Bungie itself. Microsoft owns the Halo IP and will continue on with the series, having created an entire division, 343 Industries, to further extend the brand into comics, anime, books, and other forms of media.
well halo reach has deffenetly lived up to the hype im no halo fanitic by any means i used to prefere cod untill MW2 was released which was just overated. but halo reach really is worth every penny, shame bungie is leaving to join Activision the turds responisable for milking call of duty but bungie always has produced good games so im not worried. I just hope that 343 industries can deliver some decent halo content/games I'd hate to see this epic series of games end.
More like "Halo:Reaching". How many more iterations and revamps is this series going to get? "Now you can bunny hop higher!" *Bam!* Slap a new moniker on it and throw it on the shelves!
thenephariouson@WTF are you talking about! One thing nintendo have games sold more than Halo (overall)(ex. SSBB,MKWii,etc). And at least sony have more than one game that sell in millions then just halo.
@joshboy101 that is a very good point. CODMOD2 was for 360 AND PS3, so think if reach was on PS3 too!? it would have shattered CODMOD 2's record
@thenephariouson Except GT is getting a new release after years and years of development ( instead of being milked every year ), MGS and Konami are not even owned by Sony, and Guerrilla is just about to release their second game in this gen
i was hopping you would dso better than this halo maybe somthing closere to COD:MW2 but non the less bravo, and an yet to get my copy due to my finacial short comming
[[nfc1nfl Posted Sep 17, 2010 9:49 pm GMT Time for MS to whore Halo like Nintendo does Marion, Metroid, Zelda and those wii sports games.]] By this comment i assume you own a Sony Console, as you failed to mention, GT, MGS, Killzone
@metalkid9 Alright my friend, I guess we both misunderstood each other. Although I only thought you were a PS3 fanboy because you said the same usual "SALES DONT MEAN ANYTHING" argument and while it's true, it had nothing to do with what I said. So I guess we were both wrong bout each other. Just goes to show you how assuming things can make you look stupid(myself included)
This is why Halo Reach is fun, you can do this in it! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rWXz5gH-DI :D
Halo just came out and I went and got FF13 for 10 bucks toda.lol. I'm not into halo but my 8 year old loves it.. He will own it soon.
I hate how people say it is over rated... I can not think of another FPS that offers as much as Reach does in one package. It sells this much for a reason, it is a superb game.
@Fusco1980 EA did not make Dragon Age, Battlefield, or Dead Space lol They publish games...not make them.
You would think that Microsoft would go multi-platform and sell that many more games. Unless there is some reason it's more profitable for MS not to.
I'm a ps3 owner and I ain't gonna start that childish ''console war''. But saying that xbox own ps3 in selling is ridiculous, when it was released 1-2 years earlier then the ps3. And it's cheaper. Of course people will buy it? isn't that kinda obvious? Anyway.... $200 are a a a lot of money in 24 hours. Soon will the gaming market take over hollywood god dammit :D Kudos to MS for a financial success I guess.
@freema or alternatively (speaking as a hard working tax payer and halo fan rather than a kid getting 60 bucks off his parents) it means a game is really really quite good ... the thing with really successful games is that people have a tendency to just look and declare it "oh its hyped thats why its sold so many" there does come a point where even people who dont like the game have to acknolwedge that a great selling game is really good even if you yourself dont like it. And I think 200 million dollars in 24 hours (yet another record) is a good point for that ... The gaming industry is a very brutal thing, if a game is hyped up and then turns out to be total rubbish it will sink like the titanic Though bully1999 does have a good point even if he did phrase it a bit childishly. At present (and in no small part due to halo) the 360 is dominating the console market compared to the ps3. Though speaking as a ps3 owner as well as a 360 one no doubt the ps3 will begin to close the gap as the 360's age starts to show but the ps3's superior spec and blu-ray medium begin to come into their own at last after all these years. Its an exciting time to be an owner of both consoles :)
@squidracerX are you stupid or something did I knock GT5 in any way? No I just said I don't think it will appeal to as many people as Twisted Metal. Personally i don't like GT5 but I didn't want to knock it because two of my best friends love it. As for bad math what the hell are you talking about. You are implying that even 7 percent of the PS3 market is good be we are talking about 24 hours. Get smart buddy and read I didn't bad mouth the game I just go off of what you would expect out of your audience. Take the average number of race games sales in the marker and you only get like less than 3 percent. Of that 3% of your 38 mil would b around 1.14 and guess what I doubt all the 1.14 will be getting the game on launch day. You are a truly special person. Personally I would get Twisted Metal over GT because I like to play online with friends and it is exciting and blow stuff up. If launch day isn't included in your math then don't waste time trying to sound smart stupid!!
@ buying1999 The eloquence of your argument suggests that you're about 10 years old (add or take away a year). If that's the case then perhaps you're too young to truly appreciate the power of ps3 console. Being 10 also makes you the target audience for this Halo game. So 200 million doesn't mean anything about the console on the bigger scale, except that there are a lot hyped-up kids who know exactly how best to mooch those $60 from their parents.
Biggest is a pretty vague and all encompassing kind of word. It didn't sell straight volume like COD but there was a lot of hubbub about it. I've been to many mid-night launch events where people came in and got their games and left...this event was insane. I didn't make it, but the local gamestop near me had people lined up and going bananas at 9pm when the store closed. Not to mention all the commercials and the fact that snoop dogg was in matchmaking all night day 1. I'd venture to call that big.
Xbox 360 is dominating the industry. Thrashing the ps3. This game sold more in 24 hours than the fabled UC2 and Killzone2 combined for their entire time on the market. Oh man that's weak PS3. Where's all that power I keep hearing about?? I think the cell must be a bunch of hamsters running in a wheel and the rsx with it's pitiful fill rate is calling out,"Help I've fallen and I can't get up!"
Easy $$$ betting CoD: Black Ops will out-sell Halo: Reach, easy. (fanbois insert excuses here) For MS to say Reach is the, "biggest US entertainment launch of 2010" , is asinine... no single-property software will beat out a multi-plat icon. Sony over-boasted @ E3, now MS is doing it...? When will these companies cut the crap & lay off the penis-envy hype-wagon? I cannot wait until Bungie has their 1st multi-platform incarnation. I think their pairing with Activision (and away from MS) is going to make for some amazing games everyone can enjoy!
Well that's good and all im happy for them. Now I'm waiting to see what will happen at the launch event of Black Ops.
Hilarious how they say the money made but not the sales. lmao. Obvious sign of manipulation and not telling the whole truth.
