Exec. producer Rod Fergusson says studio hasn't ruled out bringing series into first-person shooter genre, explains "it's all about what's interesting in the industry."
Epic Games has not ruled out developing a Gears of War first-person shooter. Speaking to the Official Xbox Magazine, Epic Games executive producer Rod Fergusson explained the studio will examine popular industry trends, as well as fan input when deciding where to bring the series next.
"I'm a big believer in never say never," Fergusson said, of the prospect of Epic making a Gears of War first-person shooter. "It's all about what's interesting in the industry at the time and where fans want us to take it. We don't want to say never but it's not on the top of my mind either. We look at what makes sense and move in that direction."
The original Gears of War, its sequel Gears of War 2, and the trilogy-capping Gears of War 3 were all third-person shooters. Additionally, next year's Gears of War: Judgment is also viewed from a third-person perspective. The franchise has dabbled with first-person shooter elements, with Gears of War 3's Hammerburst weapon allowing players to aim down the sights.

I hate 3rd person games but wanted to like the Gears of War series. Seriously bring us a 1st person version and I will buy it. As for the comment someone made about bringing back Unreal well that wouldn't be a bad idea either.
@killman961 some of us hate 3rd person shooters so we will glady welcome GOW 1st person .... if it is done right
I don't know. I love Gears of War. Just not favoring an FPS version. FPS hasn't changed for the better and the most changed I've seen on an FPS was Mods (well if you want to count on games like Bio Shock and Borderlands). I think they should just dabble the series in the RTS genre.
No, not 'all about what's interesting' as we've learned time and again. Not when projects have out-of-touch leads. We've seen that far too often...
I prefer third person, so hopefully this will not happen. I would love to see the series go portable on Vita or 3DS. 3DS being less likely due to being incompatible with the Unreal Engine 3.

How about lay off the shooter for a while and make Gears of War Tactics? By now there are a lots of characters to use and recruit.
In my opinion, Epic Games, please do not develop any first person shooter of Gears of War. We already have enough with first person shooter video games and I do not want you to be part of it as well.
I wouldn't mind a FPS Gears game. That would be aight. & I wouldn't mind an action RPG Gears game either. That would be cool too. Just dont keep making the same game with a new subtitle added to it. Halo did it with Halo Wars so y cant Gears branch out & try something different??? Resident Evil did the same thing with RE Survivior & RE Dead Aim (yes i know they weren't good games but those lead to the inspiration of Left 4 Dead & Dead Island). I dont mind a company trying to expand on the franchise by going @ it with a different genre.
making a first person game wont ruin the franchise, the original third person games will still be there wont they? so please explain to me why a first person entry in the series will ruin it? maybe you wont like it, but it'll bring new players to the franchise. and if you dont like guess what? you dont have to play it, play the original. dont bash something that hasnt happened yet. I for one think it would be a smart idea for Epic to make an fps Gears of War game, they'll be bringing new players to the franchise, they can introduce new characters and scenarios, and it can even take place during the original trilogy but with a different squad.
What I love about gears of war is the 3 persom shooter mechanics. If they make it an FPS it will become another random FPS, bt with aliens ¬¬'. Really don't screw one of my favorite franchises.

There are already a gears of wars FPS It's called Bulletstorm and it's a very cool game. You don't confront the locust but still the same parameters. Diferent name and enemies but the same imersive game and similar aspects of the caracters in physical and in personalities.
@Diogozaca Bulletstorm plays much differently than Gears of War. It's nowhere near "the same imersive game". Having similarities and being overall similar are 2 very different things.
@TheologicVs Ah, but it's all about the wording, and if you can't appreciate the difference and don't know better you can still get duped into buying the game.
@TheologicVs OK, but the fact of the game have diferent perpectives, first person and third person, makes the "how to play" and the differs one to another, but if you had GOW on RPG it may have the imersive play and the very same caracters, but will also bee a different game with just similarities and still being a GOW game. Calling bulletstorm a GOW similar game is because if you compares the caracters, the enemies, the background and many other things you can see similarities that reminds you one or another game. So I'm not saying that they are the same, but the way they had made the game seems like I cold say "it reminds me a LOT of gears" in the first day a play. At least ist my opinion.

3 Like Gears of War is great as a 3rd person shooter, I can't see how the cover mechanics would work just as well if the game is an FPS. I'm more hoping for an RPG type of game where you play as a stranded and by day you scavenge for weapons, food, armor, other survivors and all kinds of equipment then you bring it back to the colony to defend it Ala Horde mode by day and you can slowly become better at certain types of guns through further use decreasing the recoil and becoming better with active reload as you progress, maybe add in a feature that lets you trade equipment with nearby settlements and aid them in defending their bases and form alliances
1 Like Maybe they can also make a turn based strategy like the front mission series. It really fits perfectly with the COG style of small elite teams flanking larger enemies and this time around you get to control the entire team and truly feel like an elite tactical team
Everyone is taking the article too literally. Of course among the things which are almost 'unlikely' or 'impossible', a Gears fps would indeed seem possible. He'd be stupid to completely rule it out. 'Not ruling out' isn't the same as confirming it.
1 Like FPS is one of my favorite genres. It also happens to be popular. Maybe it's a fad, but as long as they sell, they will be made. I for one am not tired of them.
2 Like @Brakkyn @damodar_thade I remember during the PS1 and PS2 era people were saying there were too many JRPGs, nowadays good JRPGs are very rare and people are always hoping for more. Maybe someday we can say the same to the FPS genre so for now we should just enjoy it while it lasts
2 Like hopefully this isnt a preview to what shooters are to become, not to anger fanboys but rerun after rerun of the CoD series now GoW and who knows what direction the BF series will take. Honestly tho why not continuously stamp out more or less the same game with a new paint job over and over again when people pay for it, and not to mention those who fork out an additional $50 for Elite Premium type services.

Epic has a long history with FPS games. hopefully they'll be able to pull this one as well.
Gears 3 was to be their last game, they said. I suppose they shouldn't have said never either.
Not really a fan of the GOW franchise, but if the game developers do something unique and different with every new game, unlike COD, then i don't see the problem. Besides, i might actually buy a GOW game if it's FPS :P

1 Like They already did that it was called Bulletstorm and it was awesome. Oh I forgot it undersold. Just because it didn't have the gears name people didn't give it a chance. Really people give new games a chance. Is the same people that complain about the lack of new games that are the ones not buying them either. I will be buying dishonored thank you very much.
@ExplicitMike I gave Bulletstorm a chance, was really fun despite the bugs i encountered like levels glitching and AI getting stuck mid air on a leaf.
I kinda hope they do make a Gears of War FPS, third person competitive games are a joke.
1 Like I love that Point of View is still a genre defining element in shooters. In racing games, there's button you press to shift between a 3rd Person Racer and a 1st Person Racer. Fallout, Skyrim, games like that let you choose. But yeah, great idea... I bet blind fire, staring at walls while in cover, wallbouncing and rolling around is a blast in 1st Person view. Can't wait...

Because, it takes the best of first person AND third person by throwing you in third when you take cover!BTW, I have respect for Ferugsson at least thinking about it. Would a Locust oriented FPS game be cool? What about being the stranded? A survival FP-horror-Shooter set in the Gears universe? Of course they aren't going to do that because we know what Epic truly specializes in and where they truly shine.... but man, it's nice to have open ended developers.
1 Like @camyers1310 Yeah, I have both. That's indeed how it could be done. But since repelling, fast rope, turrets, cover and all that are in 3rd person, the only thing in 1st person is your movement. So, couldn't that just be an option? That's all I'm getting at. Because those things that Vegas puts in 3rd person work well. So in Gears, rolling, cover, blindfire etc would probably be best in 3rd person. So the only 1st person stuff would be running around. There are first person elements anyway with the Hammerburst sight and Longshot scope. Games like Halo do all the turret and vehicle stuff in 3rd person. The over-the-shoulder stuff in Gears is pretty much a 1st person view. I'm not against new ideas, quite the contrary. I just don't understand the need to still have that separation in the genre label between 3rd and 1st person since some games use both anyway.
I won't make a huge deal of it but I'm not a fan of the statement Rod said about "It's all about what's interesting in the industry at the time". That's not about new ideas. That's about catering and following trends. That's how you get stale games and been-there-done-that syndrome. I think great ideas and great new IPs are all about "What no one else is doing" or "What no one else could do as well as this". Open mind, yes. Bandwagon, no.
