Capcom: Resident Evil 6 successful 'to some degree'

Publisher says record setting shipments of new action game make it somewhat successful; "too early" to make judgement regarding critical response.
Resident Evil 6 did not win praise across the board at launch last month, but the game shipped a Capcom record 4.5 million copies initially. This equals success to "some degree," according to comments from the publisher recently during a question and answer session.
"Resident Evil 6 continues to generate repeat sales in Japan and overseas. Furthermore, initial shipments set a new record for a Capcom title. So this game has been successful to some degree," reads a line from the response.
Regarding the game's critical response, Capcom isn't yet ready to make a judgement.
"We therefore believe it is too early to reach a conclusion about how users view this game. We always listen carefully to the feedback from users and use this information when developing game," the statement reads.

thats like saying Obama getting re-elected was good "to some degree"...why dance around the subject and not just call it like it is without euphemisms. RE6 was terrible anyway you look at it...its just bad through and through.

as i said before i played every resident evil olds and news and when it reached resident evil 4 i become a bit sttrange with it because it changed almost every aspects from the previous ones but wiht all of that action i loved i can say taht is one of my favourites because they dint remove one thing the surviving tension, for me they can make an action game like re 4 and 5 but without removing the survival tension from it is what happened in 6 !! nor even the professional mode would satisfy the hardcore gamers of survival in thsi games its easy until the very end
"To some degree" That sounds like a typical close mouthed statement, where they're not telling you everything or what they really think. Some companies (or perhaps just their stock owners) have ridiculously high expectations and don't think a game has been profitable even when it's sold a few million copies.
2 Like Dear Capcom, We the customers & loyal Resident Evil fans are sick & tired of these action games you call Resident Evil. Where is the survival horror??? Where is the puzzle solving??? Where is the sense of being alone with little ammo not knowing whats around the next corner??? These are what make Resident Evil Resident Evil. Not the linear shoot everything moving gameplay. The Resident Evil fans want you guys to take a long hard look @ Resident Evil remake, Resident Evil 0, Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3:Nemesis, Resident Evil Code:Veronica X, & Resident Evil Revelations. Those games are what true Resident Evil games are supposed to be like. Resident Evil Revelations was the best Resident Evil game since Code:Veronica X. Now why cant you make another numbered entry along the lines of that game??? How about you guys just remake Resident Evil 2 like you made Resident Evil for the GameCube? I'm sorry but Resident Evil 4 (which was the best of the new style of Resident Evil), Resident Evil 5, & Resident Evil 6 just dont cut it with the true fans of the series. We want survivial horror not action packed. If we want action we'll go play Gears of War. Why is it so hard for you as a company to see that??? I just don't get it. I know your in the business to make money & i'm all for that but really??? This is the shit you want to put out there & be proud of??? Capcom you guys really need to go back to the roots on this series. The true fans will not continue to support this garbage you keep putting out there. Some have already said F U Capcom. Others like myself have very little hope left that a REAL Resident Evil game will come out of a company that once had a lot of talent for making games. So just take a long hard look @ the past Resident Evil games & make your next Resident Evil game with those in mind.

To those of you that think RE6 is bad? because it's like Gears of Whatever, like come on, if it is, so what? So is RE5 but these two games are awesome because they are both fun to play, and 30 hours+ long with varieties and amazing bosses that only Resident Evil can pull off. Camera and control problems are just not true because they are the same as RE5. So why complain about something that's so stupid?
You wanna know which game suck balls because of copying Gears of War? HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS. For using stupid "gun wands", and for being TWO HOURS AND FIFTY TWO MINUTES LONG! And you know whats even more insulting? The fact that RE6 is 0.5 points different than Deathly Hallows part 1 and 2, even though those two games are fucking garbage! I'm actually one of the few who loved RE5. In nearly 30 years of gaming, RE5 is one of only 4 or 5 games that I've ever bothered to do a 2nd playthrough on. Perhaps this is because I hadn't played any of the previous games in the series so I had absolutely no expectations or bias going in. I've since played RE4 and loved that one too. But even for me, RE6 was a BIG let down. It has no identity, not very good as an action game and even worse as a suspense thriller. Next time, I'll be waiting for the reviews first. No more pre-orders from me.
@shantd So if RE6 is all about Leon and Ada like RE4 without Chris or Jake being playable, does it retain it's identity as a Resident Evil game? You know what you should do to make the current game more suiting to your liking? IGNORE CHRIS AND JAKE'S CAMPAIGN. Leon's campaign is already 10 hours long so it's like playing RE4 again. And about having no identity, each campaign is developed by 3 different teams specializing in different playstyles to be different from one another, so it's intentional. So basically, it's like playing Uncharted, Gears of War and Resident Evil in 1 game, it's worth more money that way.
I think you may understand what I mean when I say it has no identity. I'm not referring to the story, I don't care whether it revolves around Jake or Chris or Leon. I'm strictly talking about the style of gameplay, the 'feel'. I don't really have a problem with the story....matter of fact I enjoyed the cut scenes more than most of the game itself. I'm not saying it's a "bad" game. If you look at RE6 by itself without comparing it to other games in the series (how all games should be reviewed imo), I figure it's about a 6.5 or a 7 out of 10. But this is resident evil...we expect a 9 or at least 8.5.
@shantd No matter how people see it, it's still Resident Evil 5, or Resident Evil Revelations without being in first person mode, or if you want to compare it with another game, it's Dead Space with the ability to dodge. I don't have a problem about the change in gameplay style. In fact, I like the control scheme better than the previous ones because it allows more freedom of combat. If it improves the gameplay, why complain about it? What do you expect the gameplay to be? Survival horror again? With the characters now badasses capable of killing hundreds of zombies? Why not play the old games again then? I bet they are not scary anymore. 6.5 to 7.0 is a minimum score that should be given by Resident Evil enthusiasts, not a 4.5. I'll personally give this game 8 to 9 because the gameplay vary in each characters, there's plenty of collectibles in the form of titles you can unlock + skills that will definitely take me 100 hours of gameplay to collect, and it's 30+ hours long to complete the first time. This game is better and longer than Dishonored, Gears of War and Call of Duty combined in my opinion because I got bored of those game after I finish them and yet for RE6 I'm repeating the game again even though I completed everyone already the first time. If a game has that impact, who cares about the score? As long as it's not Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, with stupid gun wands, bare collectibles and it's just TWO HOURS AND FIFTY TWO MINUTES LONG!!!
Or better yet, play Haunting Ground: Capcom's survival horror game where you play as a teenage girl with the help of a dog running around a mansion while being chased by a hunchback lookalike, a psycho maid with a broken glass shard, a psycho with a gun and magician that can kill in 1 hit. If that game has a sequel, there will be no doubt that it will stay in survival horror territory.

2 Like Sales numbers do not equate to the value of a product. Katy Perry is one of the biggest names in Pop music right now, but I think most of us can agree (especially here at Gamespot) that though she fits the ideal Pop Icon mold, the content of her music is bland, superficial, and flat - RE6's action, size and sales figures does not equal substance or value. I'm not trying to take anything away from people who enjoy RE6, I'm just saying if the franchise brought along with it, the things that made the originals a hit - they could of won the hearts of those who have been along for the ride since the beginning. I'm just going to add that, IMO, the remake of RE1 embodies the true spirit of Resident Evil as well as Shinji Mikami's vision and perfected the genre that Alone in the Dark gave birth to.
@EMPTY-V I've followed the series since PS One. Facing the Tyrant in the depths of the Mansion and below a helicopter waiting for the rocket launcher. Find it most ironic you mention REmake, which for me was the reason I bought a Gamecube.
However not many did, and sale-wise was a flop.. That's why the series changed! Many of these so called 'fans' of old Resi are nothing but the sort! And are the ones who demanded change in the first place. Can't have it both ways.
Simple fact is money talks. & more action is what people clearly wanted!
@RSM-HQWell, yes can't have it both ways and that's why RE fans are more divided than ever after the release of RE6. I mean RE4 and RE5 got pretty good reviews on this site, and then RE6 = 4.5 rating and the headline of this article with Capcom stating that it was successful "to some degree"? Does that not say anything about where the series is going? Yes, action fanatics got what they wanted, but that's only half the story. I'm happy though, that the original director left Capcom and is working on keeping survival/horror a distinct genre.
@EMPTY-V I'm not going to go out and say 6 was best in the series or anything 'REmake or 4 in my view'. Nether the less, will say one persons review on a game, is not prime judgment for its quality! Have your own say people christ! You think it's a 4.5? That's ok. Personally liked it far more than 5 myself. Also "By some degree" header is Capcom news towards the sales (digits) not the actual quality in the game. As the article clearly shows when read.
Resident Evils have changed over the years fellow gamer, but all do respect we still waste OP transforming mutant bosses in grand fashion. Which has always been Resident Evil must throughout the series.
I'd like more puzzles, less ammo and dogs jumping from windows. But heck it's changed, Gamers dealt with Warcraft going from RTS to RPG far better lol,
A solid game, attacked by annoying modern gimmicks. With how BIG the actual story mode is I personally don't blame the zig zag in quality. Mercs proves the core gameplay is amazing, that's what I give praise :) Good job Capcom! (But easy on QTE & cheap chase scenes next time) xD
there's two big things that are at issue with this game, one being some people don't like the action focus of the game, understandable but that's not entirely what's wrong with this game, much of what I feel hurts this game is technical issues, it's not so much it's broken but very unpolished, don't get me wrong though I still had quite a bit of fun with it and frustration was minimal, but you'd be mistaken to think Capcom could do any better, in case you didn't pay attention the last few years most the talented senior Capcom staff that were responsible for making Capcom what it was left to start their own studios, Capcom got left with the scraps and it shows and has been showing a while now

i bought resident evil 6 and i dont regret it:D i loved the leons campaign because its nearest of a resident evil game, but its not enough, the crhis campaign is the one that has the best story but the worst gameplay, and jake im playing right now:S.
now i want to say to capcom that i dont know what you were thinking when you were making this game, but transforming the loving and unique saga of resident evil on a cheap action game that copycats lots of aspects of other actions games that dont excels in any part of this game, iff i want to buy an action game ill buy uncharted or call of duty but when i want to play a survival horror ill buy an resident evil game but this game very few parts gave me the tension of surviving even in professional mode:S you sold 4,5 millions copys it was because of the expectactives of the players and the name that carrys it wanst for the game itself, i dont why you want to please every gamer in this world as you cannot please greeks and trojans, just please the fans and the gamers that made this saga what is today, maybe iff you had done a survival horror game well made you had sold more at long term. you can put actions aspects on this game but dont take away the the survival horror from it. people only bought this game expecting that was a survival horror not an action game.

@wertykelpie unfournately everyone said that this wasn't a survival horror game, and yet you still bought it, since RE4 capcom moved away from survival horror and went into nothing but action paced gaming, Sorry but there wont be a RE7 as stating by the people most of which capcom just sent away by releasing RE6 the worst game in the entire franchise, i am a true RE'ER and i have played every game, for you to even comment this game was good, with bad cameras cheap deaths, QTE galore and chase scenes were if u move right when capcom wantsyou to move left you die. Stop defending the game and teh company they are both shit now.

Im a re fan but i never bought re6 because of the reports i read on the way they used QTE. I hate QTE anyway but unlike RE4, it seems they never used them approriately.
The problem with RE6 was that is suffers horribly from schizophrenia. It does not have a true identity, and the game feels all over the place at times. Multiply that by the overly used QTE and horrible chase/vehicle sequences, (especially evident in Jake's story) that painfully forces the story along. I mean the Snow Mobile and Motorcycle escapes where some of the worst attempts at action?? I've seen, and honestly would've been better as cutscenes. They were badly designed, resulting in a lot of cheap deaths especially in co-op, and made me dread playing Jake's story even though I like Jake himself.? Leon's story was my favorite simply due to the nostalgia. The zombies were a nice touch and made his campaign the closest to what RE use to be. I don't mind RE being more action oriented going forward but they need to find a healthy balance of action and survival horror. Maybe they should go back and study and update RE 1 -3, just add co-op and update the controls to match RE 6, and give it a over the shoulder view but keep all the story elements the same, complete with puzzle solving, and back-tracking. Maybe doing this will help them reconnect with the series and get their mojo back.
6 Like Hypothesis: Had this game been a new IP without the Resident Evil title, this game would have received a medicore score from most reviewers and sold less than 400 000 copies worldwide. It would not have generated much controversy, not received a sequel and been forgotten before Christmas.
RE6 is garbage it's not even a good action game. Capcom just made some half assed mindless shooter with lame qte. Than slaped the RE name on it.? No wonder they droped the retail price on this game. LOL
3 Like Resident evil: zero,1,2,3,Code veronica X, VERY very good. 4,5,6 half-assed spin-offs where one of the greatest franchise EVER turned into a fucking mediocre pile of generic action GARBAGE5,6: Linear games only worth playing in co-op to have 'fun' instead of enjoying a great dark game with atmosphere,puzzles and a sense of freedom and completition when you achieve one of these puzzles/make it through a certain part. WHICH HAS ALL BEEN REMOVED SINCE THE 4TH FUCKING GAME. This serie has known one of the biggest decline ever. Whoever believes the 4 was good please stay away from my Resident Evil
haters go and enjoy you rubbish call of duty i got a lot of enjoyment form RE 6. its a good game. with the addition of being able to move when aiming and melee attacks with out prompt made it much better game. it felt like 5 but better. the haters seem to hate on the camera but i don't get that at all because its a free camera you can turn to face the way you want.

I do not know where to start so, this game looks incredibly bad. .Bad in terms of productivity and technical, anecdotal terms please do not let me deepen the silly events of game very similar to the other games that were not for the series at all, linear narrative disgusting and does not give you the complete freedom to explore , Graphicly RE5 looks much better than this for so many reasons ( hell even the remake looks much much better than this crap ) .. The Gameplay , The movements , The Camera , The Damn QTE's .... There's no words do describe how cheap this game is .
I made a huge mistake buying this piece of crap , people like you are really going to ruin the gaming industry with their "Personal Experiences" praising capcom To avoid criticism and "hate" as it claims to say and for ruining everything isn't going to help the series .. nobody care's if you like the game or not , this Game is truly looks $hit .. 1 Like i admit the game has some rough edges in the campaigns but i did enjoy res6 as a whole. But the best thing about res6 is the mercenaries. it keeps me coming back to play and that just shows that the core gameplay is actually quite deep. its great fun to try a top the scores on the leaderboards. i admit i myself gave it a 7/10 after the campaigns, but with the mercs it gets a 9/10 for me
somehow i get the feeling the bad reviews that this game got were made by people who didnt invest much time to actually see the good points about res6. it certainly doesnt deserved to get slammed with a 4.5. thats totally unjustified.
2 Like @jules2626You're being TOO nice giving it a 9.0! I gave it 7.0. My discounts: -1.0 for the weird camera, -1.0 for ridiculously action driven scenes (although they add some fun factor) and -1.0 for the pace and difficulty in general.
My suggestion for additional content would be a long survival horror campaign that can shut skeptics' mouths up once and for all. Maybe a story when all of the main characters in the series meet and work together against some kind of serious threat. Seeing RE 6 with a low score while other great games seemed to get fair judgments is just not right.
I have a hunch that Capcom would lunch DLCs to fulfill what missed in RE 6 like what they did in RE 5. People are craving and crying out for the genuine horror that only RE series can provide for gaming. To be even more precise, they are willing to pay for something that make them shit on their pants. Well, tell me if I'm wrong (no offensive emotions por favor). //( ^_^'')
@jark888 sry you sweet dumb person you, resident evil at a point a long time ago knew how to do horror, since resident evil 4 they have went away from survival horror and just entered COD action wanting COD billion dollars in 14 days mark, and btw COD is shit as game also, RE used to be a decent game, since RE4 it isn't really Resident Evil anymore. and BTW i really fucking hate EA, and i would love to see if like capcom EA goes and destroys it's survival horror game by adding co-op, that game that EA is making defined SURVIVAL HORROR, unlike the newer RE's DEAD SPACE knew how to scare you senseless, and now we wait and see if the co-op and wasting resources making co-op truly hurt the atmosphere that Dead space knows how to build. We will find out in feb.
2 Like @jark888 Well, DLCs "Lost in Nightmares" and "Desperate Escape" for RE 5 were good but too short, although they provided some backstory about Jill mostly. If Capcom deliberatly launch DLC disconnected of the main story, it can be even more disastrous! I'm not one of those willing to pay for "horror content" if the game pretty much sells itself as an action packed adventure...
