Activision's new online service struggles to handle demand with Modern Warfare 3 launch; some users facing registration and login troubles.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 went on sale at 12:01 a.m. today, debuting alongside Beachhead Studios' new Call of Duty: Elite multiplayer-focused online service. While the game's launch appears to have gone off without a hitch, the service is another matter. In a statement posted on Activision's official Call of Duty: Elite site at 12:15 a.m., Beachhead Studios head Chacko Sonny addressed user reports of problems getting started with Elite.
"Registration requests for our new live service Call of Duty Elite are exceeding even our most optimistic expectations, which is creating a bottleneck and some players have not been able to register," Sonny said. "We have already registered hundreds of thousands of players, and we are working around the clock to increase our capacity as quickly as possible."
While the statement appeared to have been taken down as of press time, Activision was still acknowledging ongoing problems through official channels later in the morning. The verified Call of Duty: Elite Twitter feed addressed specific user complaints, saying, "We're working to increase capacity for the hundreds of thousands of players wanting membership. Stay tuned for details."
Although it launched with Modern Warfare 3, the Call of Duty: Elite service also supports last year's release in the series, Call of Duty: Black Ops. That game has been proclaimed the highest-earning game of all time on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC in the US and Europe.
Elite provides players with gameplay statistics, video sharing, and clan support features for free, but those who shell out for the $50 annual subscription will also receive all downloadable content released in the year, video content including strategy and analysis from some of the best competitive players in the world, and the Elite TV episodic content from talent like Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, and directors Ridley and Tony Scott.

Lmfao.. and all those who complained at the slight glitches on the BF3 launch. Those were nothing compared to this. How's it feel?
@Micra-IRL- Have the same problem. i can only log in on the website but it is about 50/50 I either get kicked off, or if Im on it wont load any stats.
using xbox 360... can't sign into cod elite game app, just have logging in.. screen all of the time, just wanted to know if i'm the only one with this prob or what....thx.. (",)
@moviequest14 Well, the service is unnecessary, the game is dated, and the series is getting stale. This is becoming the norm for CoD, but hopefully not for the whole of gaming. If this "cancer" of gaming continues, I'm right there with you. I've already begun building my old game collection for ps1 and ps2. Fight the corporate power, "occupy gaming" movement, indeed.
They force you to pay 120 dollars for the game+map packs, but then turn around and say you can get it all for 110! What a deal! Meanwhile I'll be playing Skyrim and enjoying the best spent 60$ this past couple of years.
Since Call of Duty is trying something new this year (wow, something new !!!!/sarcasm) with Elite, there were bound to be incidents with the launch, since they couldn't spend all of their time and resources on one thing. Since MW3 is supposed to sell ridiculously well, I guess we will have to wait for that other type of snafu - situation normal all fed up.
If you buy the game new...with a say...2 year subscription you are paying $160+ for one game with 3 hours of gameplay. You are also paying for a service that could give you absolutely ###### dlc (since they already have your money anyways it doesn't matter about the actual quality of the dlc) that you have already payed for until the next $160 cod comes out...there sure are a hell of a lot of gullible people out there.
Elite is free. 95% of the system can be accessed by free users. $50 for a year of service for all DLC is a great deal. I always purchase the DLC, so this is a steal since they hiked the price up to $15 for each map pack.
@Freezezzy Let's be honest here. There is ALWAYS going to be DLC for a new COD title as there will ALWAYS be a new COD coming out. This is Activision we're talking about here. As long as people continue to buy these games year in and year out, it won't stop. But there is light at the end of the tunnel though. WOW is starting to suffer, losing over a million subscribers, and I give COD a couple more years before people awake from their drone slumber as well.
Don't you miss the good old days when you used to get a full game when you payed for one? With the technology today if even small indie games can afford free multiplayer servers and make full games why can't the multi-million dollar COD franchise? This is why when it comes to cod I go for wii...graphics might not be as good but it is still the same game and a full one at that.Day 1 dlc, paying for multiplayer,''membership'' and the likes is the r#pe of the gaming world and it will be the death of it.Once #### like this comes to all games I will stop getting new games and go back into the classics ''old fashioned'' vault...and by ''old-fashioned'' I mean those ancient enough to give you what you pay for..a full game.
@PixelAddict Used to spending cash on PSN, yes. Used to paying for online multiplayer, no. There's no way, it's one of their biggest selling points against buying an Xbox 360. "Buy PlayStation. You get free online multiplayer." And they posted this little graphic at the end of their first PS+ year to show how much of an investment it is for users that bought it. I like to call it the "discount and extended rental" service.
You guys do know that there is a difference between downloading elite and paying for the extra services right? The stat tracking and community aspects of elite are free, and so everyone who has MW3 or even just Black Ops can download it and have access to the main features. There's no way to know yet how many people are paying for the extra features.
Just checked how many points it was to buy this elite stuff, 35 quid or 4000 ms, Keep it ! Carnt get over how greedy and ignorant they are getting with this game. It will all come falling down on them one day, Same reason the game is MW2 with new maps, Pure greed.
if you go to mw3 xbox review, GS user rating is "9.9". But if you click in, i doubt the average is higher than 7 or 8. Once again, GS is an EPIC FAIL. Spread the words.
They have something special if you sign up before the 13th!!! but I can not even log in at all!!! I think that is pretty lame. How could they not be prepared for this. "Hey if you sign up for the premiumem account then you get this awesome bonus, you only have 3 days left. Just click here" click "sorry Internal Server Error 500, It will be fixed in 4 days"
honestly i think this elite subscription is a load of s***,but it doesnt bother me cause its my choice if i want it or not but if they make it mandatory like some of you are suggesting than i will never buy a cod game ever again.
@superflykalel Yes. They're SUPPOSED to release one every month, but WILL they? That's the issue here. You're paying up front for content that may not even exist yet, and given Activision's recent reputation of milking franchises and fleecing customers, it's hard to trust in their ability to follow through with promises like that. If you look at the recent articles, you'll see one that states that the next Call of Duty game is already confirmed for next year, so what do you think will get priority: DLC for this year's game, or development for the next one?
Ha, can't say this surprises me that this happened...clearly they seem to have had no problem w/ their billing servers considering all them 50 buck charges they collected. You'd think Activision would've planned a little better for this s***. Then again we ARE talkin' about Activison here. :|
Call of Duty is really one of the few franchises that could get away with charging people a subscription fee to play (I pray to God it never comes to that)...many people just blindly follow cod wherever it goes.
Every game nowadays seems to enjoy some kind of launch problems, especially multiplayer games. This is no big deal.
Bungie provides much of what they are providing for free. Will that stay that way ? Seriously the stats are awesome and all but really couldn't it be a bit cheaper or heck free ?
@toddx77 I agree. Some people have way too much time on their hands and would do better to just enjoy the game and get on with their lives than obsess over statistics and all the rest of it.
@crossdudu @Spacerac So... you don't think PSN+ is a "gateway" charge to get people used to spending cash on PSN? C'mon people, Sony sees the revenues and drools. This is a business, and nobody is in this for charity. Talk to me again in 3 years, when we're spending $60 a year to play on 720 AND PS4. @zzamaro Really? We've been through this. I play all the systems. Since the Atari. You should know this by now...
I can't believe people actually are paying for this crap. If Im reading that right, not counting getting all the dlc, the only thing a paid subscription adds is competitive players giving you advice and celeberties talking about the game? Why would you want to pay $50 for that kind of crap? What, do people want to watch a video of Jason Bateman talking about mw3 so they can be like "Jason Bateman plays call of duty, I play call of duty. Jason Bateman is just me like me." I wouldn't even pay valve that much for something like that, and I freaking LOVE valve.
there's no excuse for this horrible service they had plenty of time to get things right they knew. a lot of ppl were going to b online day one actvision is so stupid.
@Freezezzy Im always glad to see ppl like you, fully aware of the dangers of corporate crap in gaming, well said :) Yeah,CoD indeed causes huge damage to gaming, corporate crap should stay away from my games! Most Elite featurs are free,as I understand(I dont buy MW3 or BF3,both made by corporations not deserving of my money or support),howewer, brainwashed CoD masses will gladly pay more for some unnecessary "premium" features, just like they payed for overpriced map packs, encouraging other companies to start with similiar crap... Sad times to be a gamer indeed :(
Gonna finish this single player campaign, then return it to EB Games and swap it for Batman. Battlefield 3's multiplayer makes this look like a joke.
Not surprising, this is why I wait a week or two for problems to solved and patches to be released before buying a game nowadays!
*sigh* Why can't you just burn and die Activision? I hate you so much. Remember Cod 4? A game that was actually good. You made BILLIONS on these games, why can't you be bothered to spend a penny actually making them good. I used to love these games, but corporate greed and laziness has ruined cod. :'( Oh well, Ima go play battlefield.
we are having technical difficulties=our security is still so bad that there are 10th lobby stats for people on the leaderboards you sheep pay $50 for
You don't have to pay to play COD online. You are paying for wanting everything that COD puts out. Please research things before you blab negativity about COD. That's all I ask.
I'm not trying to stick up for these guys about the subscription for something that should be free but doesn't this only suck for the ones who did not buy the hardened edition, I don't know who cares in away and this crap happens to a few companies this year because they were not expecting the out come to be this great. This sucks all around and both ways, I'm bored peace out and game on.
For those of you who don't understand. MW3 is supposed to be putting out a new DLC every month, so I would say that this is worth it. But, only if you know that you are going to buy the DLC anyways. It ends up being a lot cheaper.
This game has a huge fan-base and of course you'd expect a few problems at the start. People don't seem to realise that the paid Elite service includes all future map packs, which is actually a very nice saving if they bring out 3, which they will.
