Bungie's Destiny 'quite like Halo' - Report

Demonware employee supposedly demoed Bungie's new game, finding it to resemble studio's prior body of work.

Bungie's next game, rumored to be titled Destiny, is reportedly not very different from the company's most famous body of work: Halo. Internet supersleuth Superannuation dug up a blog entry from a Demonware employee at Kotaku, who wrote about the day he spent at Bungie, including a description of the studio's new game as "still quite like Halo."

This person, reportedly a senior Demonware employee, described Destiny as boasting cooperative gameplay and numerous alien gun battles. He added that its sense of exploration was a strong point. Overall, though, he said that "there is a lot of work still to be done."

He also claimed he was shown a video that demonstrated a live game scene that featured numerous atmospheric items, including "huge amounts of trees and foliage," as well as particle effects, dynamic lighting, and a day-night cycle. Lastly, he wrote about Beatles member Paul McCartney's involvement with Destiny, which Bungie confirmed over the summer.

Demonware is an Activision-owned online software and services company. It has contributed to a range of Activision franchises like Call of Duty and Transformers and lists Bungie as one of its partners.

Destiny is Bungie's first project as part of a 10-year publishing deal with Call of Duty company Activision. Legal documents from May suggest that this game will be released for the Xbox 360 and that console's successor in 2013, with a 2014 release slated for the PlayStation 3.

2013 = Next-Box... Can't see "particle effects" being done on what sounds like such an immersive game on current gen software (think Watch Dogs E3 demo for what I'm talking about)... Bring on E3 2013!!!

Oh. Was kind of hoping they'd go off the beaten path a bit and bring us something totally fresh.

Ehhh, I really hope this isn't true. I love Halo and Bungie to death but the world already has Halo. What I want is something innovative from Bungie, its not like they haven't proven they know how to do it.

Well, I doubt Activision partnered with them to develop social games. They want another mega franchise, Bungie developed one, so make another one with a different title and go multiplatform.

Halo-esque game on the PlayStation 3?

I'm down with that.  Then again though Activision is involved.... so maybe not!

Well at least someone is trying to make a Halo-esque type of game... 343 destroyed Halo with its new Call of Duty type game play... HALO 4 multiplayer sucks! Campaign is great, and so is Spartan Ops... the rest is just so much garbage. I was so disappointed with Multiplayer I was actually pissed...

First Silent hill dies. then Resident Evil dies. Now Halo is completely ruined for me.

I played Halo 3, and Reach alot online... I don't think I'll ever go play Halo 4 online again... hated it so much.

I imagine they made a new ip rather than keep making  halo because microsoft was trying to control what they were doing with halo.

Ferg1213

@dkdk999 Nah because they were failing at making good Halo's.. Halo 4 is absolutely amazing and it's all down to 343.

DDFLETCHER

@Ferg1213  @dkdk999 No, it's because they were sick of sitting around milking their old cash cow, they wanted to build another franchise to milk billions from. Notice the guy said "there is still a lot of work to be done" work will be done to make the game more unique, it isn't being released for around another year, which is plenty of time to change the mechanics of a FPS quite a bit.

@Ferg1213  @dkdk999 How can one fail at making their own IP... just take a second and think about it.

Not Bioware's fault, It's EA's notice how Dragon Age and Mass Effect both started to become crap when EA decided to become Eviler Activision

@Ferg1213  @dkdk999 Uh.... no! Halo 4 multiplayer sucks! Its not even Halo anymore... its so stupid. The campaign is awesome, and so is Spartan Ops... the rest of the multiplayer is garbage.

What people need to realize is that shortly after Halo 3, Bungie and Microsoft professionally agreed to end their business arrangements. But, under contract, Bungie had to ship out another two games. ODST and Halo Reach. Is it a shocker that these games were the most disappointing in the series? They worked on the damn series for 10 years. I'm sure their project leads were getting tired and wanted to move in a new direction; and when they wanted to bail out, they had to keep grinding so they could break free from Microsoft.

Carpetfluff

@camyers1310 None of which would really point you towards them all heading off and making a Halo-esque game as their escape plan from the grind.

camyers1310

@Carpetfluff I don't believe Halo-esque game is the right term. Granted, we haven't seen gameplay so we can't be for sure. I imagine they took what they've learned from the Halo series and implemented solid shooting mechanics that probably feel similar to the Halo control scheme. As for the rest of the gameplay, who knows? It could be an entirely different game in a universe that does not resembles Halo's. All it needs to be called a Halo clone would be that similar Halo feel when you run around and shoot. There's potential for a fresh new IP. Until we see gameplay, no one can be too sure. As long as the rest of the game itself differentiates itself from Halo - it has my interest.

343 just SMOKED anything Bungie EVER did with Halo. Not to mention the game now looks realistic, as it should, instead of cartoony, like Bungie made it. Bungie sucks and I'm not surprised they're trying to make a Halo-type game with different skins. I don't think they're capable of anything else at this point. People will buy it because they assume Bungies next game will be killer and Activision will promote the hell out of it.

surppo

@Vodoo I dont tink the guy meant its a halo clone.  I think its an open world shooter mmo type of game.  Of course the shooting gameplay will be similar, bungie spent 10 years perfecting its shooting mechanics.  they wouldnt just throw that away.

Halo itself is like Bungie's Marathon. So are we gonna see even more Marathon symbols in Destiny?

I'm honestly not surprised, but I'm not sure how they could top what 343i is doing with Halo.

Look on the bright side though, it's a new IP, which is not common among shooters these days.

kind of dissapoint here.. i love halo to death but idk.. i just hope this guy is overreacting.. it could be similar, yes because its bungie.. but cmon not waaay too similar..
