Big in Japan March 12-18: Pokemon + Nobunaga's Ambition

New Pokemon title for DS dominated the sales chart for the week; console sales took slight dip.
History has shown that any new Pokemon title will make headlines in Japan in terms of sales. That was still the case for the week of March 12, as the Pokemon Company and Tecmo Koei's collaborative effort--Pokemon + Nobunaga no Yabou--was the top-selling game on the recent Media Creates chart update.
Pokemon + Nobunaga no Yabou (or Nobunaga's Ambition) beat out newcomers Shining Blade and Puella Magi Madoka Magica Portable with 172,027 units sold. The new Pokemon game is set in the Ranse region, which mimics feudal Japan and also contains cartoon versions of historical figures like Oda Nobunaga and Uesugi Kenshin. Gamers are given the objective to conquer 17 castles with their own generals and Pokemon. Combat is handled in an isometric view and is turn based, much like strategy RPGs such as the Disgaea series and Final Fantasy Tactics.
Sega's Shining Blade for the PSP was at second place with 122,257 units sold. The RPG is part of the company's Shining RPG series; players initiate combat against enemies in a combat system that mixes up turn-based and real-time elements and places an emphasis on teamwork.
Hanging in at third place was Puella Magi Madoka Magica Portable for the PSP with 62,408 units sold. The game is a rogue-like RPG with visual novel elements including branching scenarios and full voice acting.
Other notable newcomers include the PS3 version of Mass Effect 3, which was at 20th place of the charts with 8,142 units sold. The third instalment of the game concludes the trilogy, with players controlling Commander Shepard as he or she helps beef up the war effort against the main antagonists known as the Reapers. The usual sales culprits still hung onto the top 10. One Piece: Kaizoku Musou was just below the three new titles with 34,600 units sold, while Mario Kart 7 and Monster Hunter 3G were close to the bottom of the top 10 with 17,064 and 16,924 units sold, respectively. Hardware sales for the week took a slight dip, but nonetheless still remained consistent like the last update. The 3DS was still on top with 64,017 units sold while the PS3 was at second place with 27,900 units sold. The PS Vita was close to dropping to the four-digit sales mark with 10,021 units sold.

@robertwarnes91 Catherine got released worldwide,but since it's nintendo we are talking about then it's a no-go.Though I think the 3DS would have sold less if that game wasn't there. :)

Wow! I just don't get it, PSP is still outselling Vita and has 3 games in the top 5 !?! Is Sony getting the hint yet that Vita is in trouble??

is it me...or does japan not really like games? highest selling game is 100,000 and best selling system is 60,000.. its no wonder most japanese video games are american looking characters...because they need to sell to the rest of the world..
It's doubtful that Pokemon + Nobunaga's Ambition will come out here seeing as the latter series has yet to come to the west, but I'm really hoping it will. It looks interesting. And did anyone else catch the title of #7? I honestly don't know what to say except that it sounds like it would get an A rating, if it would even be allowed over here.

My face just drop because ds game no1 and psp game at no2 . Seems pp like psp more and ds more on the games. Ps2 still selling more than did been beten by the xbox360. PSP sold more than the PSP Vita . So be werid if will sells more than the will U and same with the ps4 and next xbox. Gd see 3ds still selling and the ps3 and psp.
3 PSP games on the top 10 an no vita, seems PSP has more life in japan, I wonder what's sony doing about it

@Stonecutters908 No MH game has been announced for the Vita as of right now. Capcom and PSP MH fans have fully immigrated to the 3DS, and I doubt Capcom will want to anger their loyal fans by putting MH on two different handhelds. Even if the Vita does get a MH, it'll probably be a port.
The PS Vita is on pace for about a quarter million units in Japan for the year. That is including a significant multiplier bump for the holiday season. That is a disaster. That system needs to address its Japanese audience with some software pronto. They are getting a version of Monster Hunter 3 sometime later this year but what happens when MH4 comes out for 3DS? This system needs Japanese dev support in a big way and I wonder if it will ever get it the same way the PSP did.
I guess if the game does absurdly well it'll have a better chance of making it out of Japan, though I'm still doubtful. On a side note: "If I Were In A Sealed Room With A Girl, I'd Probably XXX" I'm not the only person who felt awkward pause reading this title, right?
