Beyond Good & Evil 2 making slow progress

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot confirms long-awaited game remains in development, but Michel Ancel more focused on Rayman Legends.

Beyond Good & Evil 2 remains in development, but is not longtime Ubisoft developer Michel Ancel's main focus. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot told Polygon that Ancel is currently busy with a number of projects, and his work on other games, like Rayman Legends, is slowing development on Beyond Good & Evil 2.

"What's very important is that Michel Ancel is kind of doing too many things at the same time," Guillemot said. "He was working on Rayman Origins last year, and he's working a lot on Rayman Legends this year. So, you know, when he does that, he kind of puts too much of his time on the other projects that he has."

Ubisoft and Ancel are committed to bringing Beyond Good & Evil 2 to market, Guillemot said, but the game may not arrive for some time.

"So the fact is, that working on Legends is slowing the process on Beyond Good and Evil 2," Guillemot added. "It's really a game that we've been working, we have worked on, and is a game that we want to do. But there are so many things that have to be done that, you know, this one is going to come in line at one point, but at the moment Michele is really on Rayman Legends."

Beyond Good & Evil 2 is a sequel to Ubisoft's 2003 original action adventure game. It was revealed in 2008 and currently has no release date whatsoever. Concept art for the game leaked last year following comments from Ubisoft producer Wang Xu, who told gamers to "keep the faith" for Beyond Good & Evil 2.

That's great, I love that statement about being more focused on such a game as 'Rayman Legends'...how embarrassing for BG&E...

Sheesh, I didn't even know that this project was in the pipeline.  Given that it won't be available anytime soon, I almost wish I still didn't know...  :-/

If Rayman Legends is going to provide a good amount of money to bankroll the BG&E project,  I'll grin and bear it.

Well, I hope the game eventually makes it market.  I own the first game.  I bought it on a whim and I was pleasantly, pleasantly surprised with the gameplay, art direction, and story.  Jade is a great character and the opening sequence is exciting and to the point.  I loved taking pictures and the whole photojournalist angle.  Beyond Good and Evil wa below the radarand underrated.

its funny how people complain about other games like the last guardian taking so long yet this game was announced even before it, and even moving to next gen, either way its good that its going to be on next gen and last guardian should be too.

So, they are making slow progress on a game that was announced or revealed in 2008 and we have barely heard a lick about it? No shit, you don't say, I am shocked there.

It will come out eventually, and if it's *anything* like the last game, I'll eat my own head.

People don't want games where you have to think any more.

I think that's why they're taking so long with this.  They're trying to find a way to make it even remotely like the last game, while simultaneously trying to rake as much money from it as possible.

They're focusing on Rayman because they know they can just reiterate and make money back on the small development costs.

Sadly, this will be yet another game stuck in development limbo, released with expectations so high that the game will disappoint even if it's good.

Ugh, why focus more on Rayman Legends than Beyond Good and Evil 2? Very stupid move on Ubisoft's part.

LairBob

@edpeterson Simple -- money. The Rayman franchise generates a whole lot more revenue than BG&E 1 ever did, or BG&E 2 ever will. (Not that that's _right_...that's just _why_.)

This whole article reads like Ancel being publicly put in his place by Guillemot. "OK, everyone -- just to be clear, Michel's going to stop wasting all his time on his pet art project that thousands of people want, and get back to work on the projects that millions of people are going to buy."

What the Eff? You're working on RAYMAN rather than on BG&E 2? o_OHech yeah, we fans already just waited almost (and soon it will be) 10 years for a Sequel. I FINALLY wanna know how the story continues!Jeez Ubisoft, having a gem like this and instead working on Rayman is like if you'd be Square-Enix and instead of making a full new FF Installment you're wasting all your time in pointless Spinoffs.....Ohhh...wait.... >_<

Rayman is a good game series, but Beyond Good And Evil is a piece of gaming history!

 @PaladinPaterson

Not to argue but Rayman is basically Ubisoft's mascot and a bigger part of gaming history than Beyond Good and Evil (which I would very much like to see this game finished soon).

Cmon, has Ubisoft not seen how badly gamers want this game? We've had enough Rayman, Ghost Recon, or whatever else. BG&E was unique and fun. I want that experience again.

The game is actually done, it's the convoluted, slap-in-the-face DRM process that Ubisoft spends most of their time coding. (Pirates always find a way, and this stuff only harms legitimate buyers. Ubisoft refuses to see the reality of this, or just doesn't care.)

We have waited long enough. We can wait some more. Just make it fantastic! I am really looking forward to seeing where they go with this game. The first was quite good but I played the HD version on PSN so naturally it felt a little dated, but I can see that it would have been something special at the time.

There are very few games I buy new on the release date...most of them are original ip's and not sequals. The exception to those would be this game, Mirror's Edge 2 and anything in the Abe universe...and yet, we see nothing good on the pipe concerning any of these. What are they waiting for? Soon, everyone will forget these franchises and the sales will deminish. Any of these games would sell really well if they hurry up and release them.

@saleama they are remaking abes oddessy, its been in official xbox magazine and this is an exerpt from wikipedia "

On January 31, 2011, Oddworld Inhabitants announced that a HD remake of Abe's Oddysee is being developed by UK studio Just Add Water. The remake was described by series creator Lorne Lanning as "basically Abe's Oddysee being redone in a 3D physics engine as a 2D side-scrolling platformer," stating the developers "are not trying to reinvent any wheels." Later in 2011, Oddworld Inhabitants have confirmed that JAW will develop a new Oddworld game, by then titled Abe HD.[47] On June 5, 2012, Oddworld Inhabitants announced that Abe's Oddysee will get rebooted during the summer of 2013, with a public showing later in the year.[48] Later that day, it was confirmed that the game will be a remake of the original PlayStation title, started from scratch with 2D gameplay and 3D graphics, using the original as a blueprint.

In August 2012, Oddworld Inhabitants announced a competition where the public could submit a title name for the remake that emphasises the game's introduction to the 2.5D/HD world. The winner was to be announced in a big reveal in September and to have their name immortalised in the game's credits.[50] The pre-alpha version of the game was first shown at the Eurogamer Expo on September 30, titled Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee - New 'N' Tasty. The game is slated for a release during the autumn of 2013 for PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, PC and Xbox 360".
