Aliens: Colonial Marines drops spring 2012

Sega publishing Gearbox's long-awaited game sequel to landmark sci-fi film early next year for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360; first trailer inside.

Sega and Gearbox have at last announced a release date for their long-awaited game sequel to James Cameron's classic sci-fi film Aliens. This morning, the publisher and developer revealed that Aliens: Colonial Marines will ship for the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 in spring 2012. (A previously revealed DS edition of the game was not mentioned.) Also, no rating information for the title was available, but given the gory subject matter, an M for Mature label is likely.

Aliens: Colonial Marines' story will pick up shortly after the events of Aliens. Players will join a squad of the titular space soldiers who board the USS Sulaco, the spaceship from the film, after it is apparently abandoned. From there the action will spread to the surface of the planet LV-426 and its main settlement, Hadley's Hope. The first-person shooter will also feature environments and weapons inspired by the film.

Aliens: Colonial Marines is one of four titles based on the Alien intellectual property Sega has begun development on since it landed the license in December 2006. The publisher had commissioned a role-playing game set in the sci-fi universe from Obsidian Entertainment (Fallout: New Vegas) before canceling the project in mid-2009. In February 2010, Sega released the Rebellion-developed Aliens vs. Predator to lukewarm reviews. Finally, earlier this month, the Sega-owned studio the Creative Assembly revealed that it, too, is working on a new console project based on the film series, which spans four movies: Alien, Aliens, Alien 3, and Alien Resurrection.

    @thingta42, I really agree with you. The first time I saw Alien 3, I thought it was terrible. When I watched it again (the extended cut), I absolutely loved it.

    Alien 3 is a underrated sequel. I think its a great move worth of being party of the trilogy. Just not as good as Alien or Aliens ofc. But Alien Resurection is horrible. I mean why not called it Alien 4? why Alien Resurection?

    The first two Alien movies were superb, Alien 3 and 4 were bordering on awful in the way they treated the prior films, they themselves were well made. I hope they ignore the Alien 3 storyline and just work as a sequel to Aliens. It's the only way I'm ever going to see a proper sequel after all. And really, stop making AvP please? It was fun in 1991, but it's really beyond a joke now.

    Youre probably right, FOX did seem to poo all over alien3, just ask david fincher who wanted his name taken off the movie they interfered so much. FOX really does know how to flush a good movie/tvshow down the toilet. The fringe guys must have made a pact with the devil to still be on the air with such poor numbers.

    I WAS really excited, about 4 years ago when this was announced. Since then there was an average Aliens V Predator game released and this has been in limbo. I do hope that this will be better.......

    hopefully the Alien experience i was hoping to get from AvP last year. With this year already brimming with so much AAA I can easily wait till 2012 for this.

    @smeghead83 Your assuming that blast killed all the Aliens and that all of them were in the blast area when it happened. You also assume there can be only one queen. You also assume there was only one colony.

    @Jedilink109 Alien 4 was defiantly different. Most of it was an attempt at milk the franchise but I liked seeing people try to tame the Aliens and the baby the Mother gave birth to was wickedly freaky and I will never forget those eyes.

    How can this game be set after the end of 'ALIENS' and on the same colony when it was destroyed and the Sulaco left to drift into empty space.

    If your going to make a game based on film, then at least watch the damn film!!

    I like Alien through 3. But when Resurrection hit. Ugh, that movie is just bad. First 3 are good though. Haven't played the newer AvP game yet, but I've played some of the old game and it's pretty sweetness...

    Hope this game will be great too.

    Easily one of the best action movies of all time and certainly the pinnacle of the Alien franchise. Wonder why it took so long to get it into a game? Anyway if its done right, this could be a truly great gaming experience.

    Spoiler for the kiddies who've never seen Aliens. I hope they explain clearly (and well) how this story line comes about since the colony is wiped out in a thermal nuclear explosion of 'about 40 megatons'. Plus the population was less than 200 and considering how many aliens get blasted in the movie, there aren't many left.

    This is a game that should have been made 10 years ago, and it would have sold like hotcakes. In today's market, no one will give a damn.

    All the Alien movies were good, some more than others. I wish they made top notch games because their is plenty of material to work with for story and gameplay alike.

    avp the arcade game, that brings back some memories. it was a capcom hack & slash/beat-em-up if i remember correctly. was actually a really decent game. damn thing was a quarter muncher from what i remember of it.

    I guess the space issue could be part of the factor but I think its mostly because say you have a game with a certain budget and a certain time table, it has to come in under budget and within the set time table. With a game like AvP you have to in essence make three separate games each where the character has its own physics and it all has to be done on the budget of one game within the same one game time-frame. So instead of doing three full games, one for each species they are saddled with making a three part game where each species gets an even share of levels but none get enough to be a full fulfilling experience. Plus the fact they are in such a rush the developer is forced to cut corners, shorten levels, not spend time bug working and refining controls, that is what I think really killed the last AvP game.

    Edit - I am not against the idea of them doing two other games if this one works out (one for the Predators one for the Aliens). Heck I have been wanting a good predator game for a while, something with the feel of Infamous with all the quick building jumping, scaling etc but also with the stealth and sneak attacks like in Arkham Asylum.

    Actually, a few of you are way off the mark...

    The original Alien Vs Predator was released on the SNES in '93. It was also an arcade game in my local chip shop !!!!

    I didn't mind the recent AvP game. The campaigns were fun, just a little basic & short. The Alien campaign suffered from poor camera & movement, but it was, overall, worth a play.

    This new Alien game looks not too bad so far. Hopefully it has a decent campaign and isn't geared too much toward the MP market.

    @FidelSarcastro games like alien vs predator should be released on multiple discs if the game is developed multi-platform. for the 360 versions, they couldve had each species campaign be on separate discs as well as the multiplayer being on a disc all its own. im guessing the reason why most companies dont do this is because more discs cost more money. companies are always trying to cut costs so they can increase profits but as games become more and more data heavy, one dvd just isnt gonna cut it for most games anymore. every game that is developed multi-platform that have a campaign and multiplayer feature should be separated unto separate discs. i see alot of multi-platform games where the campaign is shortened just because they just had to cram some kind of multiplayer in there. the way i see it is, if there has to be a multiplayer feature then why not just put it on a separate disc? its because most game companies wanna be tight wads that we're forced to endure shorter campaigns and less multiplayer content for multi-platform games.

    I agree the two AvP games back in 99 and 01 were pretty good, especially AvP 2. I mean I remember playing through the marine campaign and the game got to me psychologically, like the part where you are suppose to walk this narrow ledge from the hanging lab and the gal over the radio tells ya not to look down which of course you do and for a second there I had vertigo.

    @liam82517 from what i understand, it was a budget issue. for some strange reason, despite aliens' success, alien 3 was running on a much smaller budget and they had to reshape the story to involve less guns, explosions, actors, and action. there's alot of theories of why alien 3 was much less of an action movie than aliens was but that theory seems to be the most popular from what ive seen.

    Many idiot kids here seem to forget AVP was initially a video-game for the PC back in 1999 & 2001....and a fantastic one at that. Long before all of the terrible movies and the more recent game atrocity were released. I have few better gaming memories from the late 90's than running around as a Predator or Colonial Marine in this first AVP....hell, they are up there with the first Half-life. Hopefully this lives up to that high mark.

    i used to love sega back when they used to make home consoles. their games were top notch back then, they had to be since most the best games for their consoles were their own. but since theyve become a software only developer, their games have fallen by the wayside. most of the best games they had in their first couple of years as a software only developer were just ports from dreamcast games, which explains why they were rather good. but since theyve tried to develop new games since taking the software route, theyve been coming up short for the most part. ive yet to see a sega produced game in the pswii60 generation that really made me go "wow". the only game i was really looking forward to out of all the games that sega had planned based on the alien series was the rpg one that was supposed to be developed by obsidian. i was thinking maybe a combination of fallout meets aliens. wouldve been cool i think. for colonial marines, im gonna take a wait and see approach. gonna do my homework before i even consider buying this.

    I suppose its the alien sequel we all wanted instead of alien3. I liked alien3 but throwing away the characters from aliens like they did was probably the dumbest thing they could have done. You see the characters battle to survive all the way to the end of aliens then they get killed off screen in the alien3, it just kinda ruins aliens a little.

    Finally after all this wait we can finally play out some Colonial Marine bughunting. I mean sure Alien Vs Predator was okay I guess but splitting the game between three species made it where each campaign just didnt feel complete. Now with an entire game focusing on the Marines.

    If they do it right it will have all the beats from the Aliens movies, long sections of tense dark atmospheric creeping and then some fakeout scares along the way, all leading to some intense gunfights. I cant freaking wait.

    I'm guessing the story will be waffer thin. The marines arrive, look around, get eaten and the last remaining marine, sets off a nuke. Not sure what else Gearbox can come up with. The Alien creature was created by an unknown race as a biological weapon used to rid a planet of it's indiginous populaton. Exploring that story would be more interesting I think.

    But, whatever, I'll still buy it.

    It has been awhile since I saw Aliens. But game Aliens game sound great. As for a quote. They cut the power! how could they cut the Power?

    Between the convenient oversight of the ending of Aliens ("In nineteen minutes, this area's gonna be a cloud of vapor the size of Nebraska." -Bishop) and the general lackluster treatment these games get, i remain somewhat skeptical...

    Hopeful...
